Pain and swelling after mammo!

Hi everyone just trying to figure out what might be going on. Has anyone had pain and swelling after a mammo? I had a lumpectomy 3 years ago on my right breast. A week ago I had a mammogram andI started having swelling and pain a day after mammogram on only that breast. My mammo results were normal...but still concerned. I'm really not sure what happened to me.

I also forgot to mention I felt a sting (which was maybe four hrs aftermammo)and then a small area got red and itchy before the swelling and pain. The itch is gone the red area is light pink. I swear it felt like a bee or wasp sting but no insect in sight. I was walking outside when it happened.

    I had a painful mammogram back on May 5th that caused my breast to be painful at first and then after a few days the pain went away but it started to swell.  It has remained swollen on that one side for over 2 1/2 months. So far there has been no cause identified (waited for a month to see if it was hormonal (it wasn't), had ultrasound to which was clear and tried antibiotics) I should have MRI test results back tomorrow.   I will let you know if there is anything identified on the MRI.  

    It is soo frustrating since before the Mammogram I was completely fine.

    Ladies,

    Are they that rough when they do the mammograms? I have heard it is worse for those with small breasts. Could it be the tugging and pressing from the procedure that made you sore?

    I did not like this tech as much as I have the previous ones.  She was a little rough, BUT I will give her the benefit of the doubt since it is possible maybe the pain was already there and I just hadn't noticed it yet.  I have DD breasts so I don't think that the size was the issue.  I thought at first the swelling was just due to the procedure but it has persisted for the last several months.

    thanks for replies... I'm not sure but she did keep pressing. Tech told me to let her know when it was hurting. I didn't say anything bc it really wasn't hurting at that moment so she might have over done it and squished too much.

    Tbone, I missed the part about you being sore for months. I would not expect it to last that long, either. I mean, maybe a few days if they needed to press harder.

    Nimm, I am glad they seemed to be careful about hurting you. Again, I hope it goes away or you both find out what it is and treat it.

    tbone, yes it's very frustrating. I was also fine before my mammogram. I don't think I had had any pain for a year or so on my lumpectomy breast. It's also very scary. I have been a mess for a week already. I called my dr. And she said if it got worse to call her immediately. It hasn't gotten worse but just scares me

    This is a very delayed response to this post, but I just experienced something similar!

    I had a screening mammogram a week ago and noticed the mammogram hurt pretty badly on bot sides during the imaging (I had never experienced anything outside of minor discomfort before). I even saw my doctor that day and had a breast exam and a physical exam, all of which looked good. I walked in there with no pain, palpable lumps, or anything.

    Within 48 hours, I had pain in both breasts which then proceeded to feel swollen, hard, and lumpy. I have also developed pain under my arm on both sides. I was called back for additional imaging, but I find this so strange that I was completely fine and then all of a sudden developed all this pain and a physical change to my breasts even a week later. I am a little apprehensive to go for additional images next Monday if things do not improve.

    There is something called compartment syndrome which can develope in a limb after an injury. Basically the body detects an injury (or even an intruder such as injected material or infection) and rushes fluid to the area as a defense mechanism-problem is the fluid can build up to the point that you experience pain or even more serious complications from the increased pressure within the limb. (If you have ever had a bad ankle sprain you are familiar with the concept.) In severe cases they sometimes operate to relieve the pressure before the pressure begins to destroy muscles tendons ligaments tissue or cuts off circulation beyond. I have never heard about it with breast, but I can certainly see where it could occur there also as a reaction to a mammogram.
