edited February 2018 in Waiting for Test Results

Hi, I have recently had bloody discharge in my right breast, only for a couple of times. I photographed the tshirt I was wearing and showed my Doctor. I then had a mammogram, which came back normal, just got the results today. They are still sending me to a surgeon for his opinion and more testing. Anyone else have this problem, with a normal mammogram (no lumps seen) but still have blood coming out of nipple? I'm 39, and had a hysterectomy 14 years ago so no milk for a long while! Any comments appreciated!

Brittgirl, I don't have experience with this, but just wanted to say I'm sorry you're here with breast health concerns. Please do follow up with the surgeon. Bloody discharge is not something to ignore. Good luck!

Some things do not show up on mammogram, they may order an ultrasound. Could be a papilloma-A harmless wart like. Hang in there, you will be fine.

Brittgirl, I'm glad your dr is sending you for more tests. I had bleeding as well, and we thought it might be a papilloma. Nothing showed on the mammo, but I could feel a small lump so I had an ultrasound which revealed a malignant tumor. I don't want to alarm you, but do be sure to follow up. Good luck to you!

I recently had a clear discharge. Sometimes it was bloody. Nothing seen on mammogram nor ultrasound but the bs still wanted to remove the leaking duct. Turned out to be benign but glad it was removed. At your age they may want to do non invasive tests (ultrasound, MRI) and if clear nothing more. My friend in her thirties had this. I am nearly 50 so needed to be sure. The odds are in your favour but follow through. Take care

I've been experiencing a bloody discharge from my right breast too.. no lump that I can feel. Gp referred me to see specialist.. they said they may do an ultrasound but it depends on what the consultant says. My problem is that the bloody discharge isn't constant... happens every other day or so. Feeling anxious for tomorrow.

Falconer, I'm sorry you are going through all of that. I am being very cautious and optimistic, but I'm not taking it lightly! I want to explore all possible reasons from the terrible to the just kind of bad! Thank you for your response, I've been looking for anything or anyone who can relate to my symptoms....I've found the right place here!

Heather67, That is what my plan is also, to make sure I have all of the needed tests and I'm glad doc is sending me to a surgeon, just to be sure! Because if there is something there I want it removed, FOR SURE!!! :)

Anj24, We are in the same boat right now I guess! I'm a little anxious as well. I too have only had the bloody discharge a few times, and it does it on its on. When the doc tried to excrete anything from my nipple during my exam nothing came out. Luckily I had pictures of the shirts I was wearing when I first noticed the discharge! Thank goodness for cellphone cameras! LOL

Hi Brittgirl, I first noticed a bloody discharge from my nipple at the end of May. I panicked and called my GYN. He said that it was probably a papilloma (benign wart-like growth in a duct) and sent me for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. The mammo was clear, and the u/s showed a mildly dilated duct. No lumps, masses, etc. The radiologist couldn't see anything else suspicious on the u/s but said that a bloody discharge always needs further investigation.

I saw a breast surgeon about 3 weeks later (waiting was horrible), and she thought the dilated duct was the source of the discharge. She recommended a subareolar duct excision to take out the bad duct (and the other ducts also since I am 47 and have no plans to need to breast feed again). She also took a sample of the discharge which revealed "atypical" cells. She then ordered an MRI which showed the dilated duct (filled with proteinaceous material and blood) and a suspicious area of enhancement (birads 4) along the duct that extended 6cm starting at the nipple. The report recommended biopsy to rule out DCIS.

I then had an MRI guided biopsy of the area which came back benign. The duct and area of enhancement still needed to come out just in case something was hiding, so I had a total subareolar duct excision and biopsy last week. I pretty much was convinced that I had DCIS, and I have been a complete wreck. After a grueling 6 day wait for the pathology report, the surgeon's office called this morning to say that the pathology report was fine (fibrocystic changes, fat necrosis, and acute inflammation). I have my post-op appointment in 2 days and will have lots of questions (and won't really rest until I see the pathology report myself), but for now I think that I have gotten lucky.

I would tell you not to worry, but that would be pretty hypocritical of me since I have been terrified for the last 6 weeks. I just wanted to let you know that someone else was in your situation, and the bloody discharge had benign causes. Definitely have further testing done to rule out anything serious, though. The women on these boards are amazing. They have a wealth of wisdom, knowledge, experiences, and support to share. I would have been lost these past weeks without this site.

    @sabot531....

Thank you so very much for your detailed message! And yes I am scared, but I have a lot of faith in God that I am trusting in as well!!!! I know everyone's situation is different, some are good and some not so good. I hate you had to worry for so long, I might be in the same boat, my appointment with the surgeon is Friday and after that me and my surgeon will both be out of town the next week! So I will have to carry that with me for a week or so until any more tests are done!

But I am definitely looking to this forum everyday for support and I've gotten more than I could have ever imagined from women I don't even know! Thanks again for your response. I don't know much about all of it as of now, but I'm sure I will have more terminology added to my vocabulary in the coming weeks! I'm glad your call this morning was positive, and you have given me a little light at the end of my tunnel! Thanks so much!!!! Have a great Day!!!!!

It's totally possible to have bleeding from benign papillomatosis. It happened to me 11 years ago. I was just out of the shower, standing in front of the mirror when blood started dripping from my nipple. I almost fainted. Ultimately B9, but very stressful. Good luck.

    Blessings,

    Jamie

what were you told? I had a mammogram which showed nothing and then an ultrasound which showed a lump but they said it's a cyst. Despite them saying that I'm still worried.. I bleed everyday

I was told I had a cyst, I wasn't keen on having it removed as I haven't had any children yet or married. Still bleed everyday

    HI ANJ24,

IM GLAD THEY ARE FINDING ONLY A CYST. HOPE ALL GOES WELL FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE. I HAD A FOLLOW UP WITH MY SURGEON YESTERDAY WHO TRIED TO EXCRETE SOME OF THE DISCHARGE WITH NO LUCK. HE SAYS WITHOUT A PLACE TO LOOK HE CANNOT BIOPSY. SO NOW I'M WAITING APPROVAL FROM MY INSURANCE COMPANY TO GO AHEAD WITH THE MRI. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE MY LAST STOP AND IT WILL COME BACK NEGATIVE LIKE MY MAMMO AND US. IF NOT WE WILL BE ABLE TO DO BIOPSY AND GET ALL THIS WAITING OVER WITH!

I WISH DOCTORS WOULD ORDER MRI'S SOONER, RATHER THAN HAVING PATIENTS WAIT AND WAIT AND WAIT. I KNOW ITS EXPENSIVE, AND WHERE I AM IN ALABAMA THERE ARE ONLY 3 HOSPITALS WHO PERFORM BREAST MRI. SO THATS ANOTHER FORK IN THE ROAD, TRYING TO GET AN APPOINTMENT!

    GOOD LUCK IN THE FUTURE!

I'm scheduled for an MRI on Wednesdsy due to bloody discharge. Mammogram didn't show anything and there was never an ultrasound. I had a biopsy on my left breast on Monday, which came back as a fibroadneoma. I initially went in for the discharge and they found the fibroadneoma in the other breast so they focused on that first. My emotional state has been a roller coaster for the last month.

    Fionathepug,

I'm in the same boat. Insurance finally approved my MRI and I'm scheduled next Tuesday. I hope your results from your MRI which I guess is today (8.9.17) come back b9. prayers for you and good results!

I'm still in the discovery phase, too, but here's where I'm at:

I'm a 41 year old mother of one kid (he's 9 yo) that I breast fed. Last week, I took a shower and when I came out, blood was dripping from only my left nipple. Nothing hurt, no signs of a cut, no discernable lumps. Obviously I was alarmed, and have never even heard of such a thing, so I asked my mom (a BC Stage IV survivor). She asked me to get to the Doctor right away. So my GYN sent me for a mammo and an ultrasound. Both came back clear, but the radiologist recommended an MRI to my GYN. The GYN said that's not his area of expertise, so he referred me to a breast surgeon. I guess she will ultimately decide if I need an MRI or not. I don't know how this story will turn out, but that's where I'm at right now. The waiting is scary. I am on-board with them just taking them both and giving me a pretty, perky new set that won't leak. I have a son to raise, and I'm a single mom. I don't have time to mess around, I just want to know if I'm ok or not and I'll go from there.

Badbad, I think an mri is a great idea. Blood from the nipple is not a "normal" occurrence and should be taken seriously. If the mammo+us was inconclusive, it's time to bring out the "big guns" (mri). Now, just so you're aware, mri are very sensitive ("see" most things occurring in the breast) but not specific (meaning they "see" things that are bc and things that aren't). And while a radiologist very experienced in reading breast mri may have a good idea about whether a finding is malignant or not, based on uptake and washout patterns of the contrast dye, a biopsy is almost always needed for confirmation. This means that mri lead to many biopsies that turn out to be b9. Just so you don't worry if you get an mri and they recommend one. Good luck for b9 results!

    BadBadGirls,

I still have no results! The "General Surgeon" I was sent to also said that this wasn't his area of expertise. I was going on 7 weeks with no answer at all. I took my problem elsewhere. I went to Breast Care Center which is in Atlanta and they immediately started taking action. I was in the office for 4.5 hours yesterday, they did the ultrasound again to see if they could see anything the first one missed. Still nothing. But they are being very proactive and are going ahead with the MRI tomorrow! So glad things are moving faster with a new team! The doctor sounded VERY positive that my problem could very well be a papilloma. She said its very rare that you do get B9 mammo and us and then find cancer on the MRI. With that said, I see on this forum that it has happened, but it is rare!!! I am taking that to heart and I feel so much better!!! I'm more optimistic now than I have been for two months! So hang in there, I think our chances are good that its a very fixable problem! fingers crossed and sending prayers your way! I'll update when I get my results after MRI!!!!

Well after a surgery to replace a medical device I have (finally) I have some news!!! I could never get a MRI because of this device, went so many different places and had numerous tests over and over (except MRI) and none ever showed what the MRI finally showed last week!

The MRI findings are as follows, and I have to follow up with a MRI guided biopsy on the 27th of December!

In the right breast there is a vague asymmetric ductally oriented area of enhancement seen in the 5 o'clock position extending for 2.3 cm in the AP dimension, 9 to 10 mm in the transverse dimension and 1 mm in AP dimension. A second vague area of asymmetric nonmass like is seen in the right breast anterior depth upper inner quadrant.

Vague asymmetric ductal enhancement in the right breast 5 o'clock position. Vague asymmetric nonmass-like clumped enhancement seen in the anterior depth right breast upper right quadrant is noted. It is doubtful a representation of this ductal enhancement or nonmass-like clumped enhancement would be seen on either mammo or ultrasound. These findings may be a manifestation of DCIS.

Doctor told me this is a grade 0 DCIS because we have no pathology reports, and that is was not a papilloma.... but I'm not really sure how, or what these results actually mean because I don't know how to properly read them! Can anyone relate to what they say?

I have also started seeing a new doctor, an actual "breast doctor" instead of a general surgeon. Best decision ever.
