Discordant Results from CNB

Hi Ladies,

Anyone ever had the radiologist tell you they believe the biopsy results are discordant with what they saw? From what I read it seems like they think it's a false negative?

I have a follow up with a BS scheduled already because of finding PASH, but that's not until 8/10. It's been a week since they called and said the CNB results were B9. And she just called today.

Happy they want to look into it, but now I have a month to wait and wonder. Anyone else have this experience?

Thanks.

    Hi mommakat.

I don't have my results yet, but I did just see the radiologist report and did some research. It looks like anyone who is a BIRADS 4 or 5, per the NIH, should have their results considered "discordant" if the path report comes back benign. Better safe than sorry, I suppose.

I'm BIRADS 5, so I'm pretty much expecting a malignancy. But once I read that today, even if it's benign, I guess I'll be going back in to check again to be sure.

    Hi Justbeat,

That's reassuring to know...I wish they could tell us everything at once. Hoping you get your results soon, and that they're B9. I guess the moral of the story is expect alot of uncertainties and follow up testing.

Sending you positive thoughts and energy xo

That is absolutely incorrect justbeatgeno. MOST Birad's 4 come back benign, and most are EXPECTED to be benign. Rarely is a benign result considered discordant on a Birads 4.

what MelissaDallas said! If you want to read a clear description of the BIRADS system and the positive predictive value of each of the ratings, read here:

    http://breast-cancer.ca/bi-rads/

BIRADS 4 and 5 are the classifications used as a justification for biopsy. If any sample coming back B9 were considered discordant, the system itself would not be predictive at all. Instead, " A BI-RADS category 4 mammogram has a positive predictive value of about 30%. A category 5 mammogram is almost certainly predictive of breast cancer with a positive predictive value of about 95%." What that means is that about 30% of BIRADS 4 findings are ultimately bc.
