Positive mammo, negative ultrasound?

Hello

I had my regular yearly mammo 2 weeks ago and got a call back. Went in for a ultrasound. The tech could see nothing and brought in the radiologist. Radiologist couldn't see anything either. She said there was a" pea sized mass" in the right breast seen on mammogram that she suspected was a cyst. She said it was "as plain as day" on the mammogram. She did compare it to last year's mammogram and said it was a definite change, but still "probably" a cyst. But since she couldn't see it on ultrasound and since I have a fair amount of breast cancer in my family I needed it biopsied. Has this happened to anyone? Why would something be visible on mammogram but not ultrasound? I have been googling constantly and I cant get an answer. The only info I can find is that ulrasounbds detect cysts better then a solid mass. But she kept saying that she couldn't see anything at all... Im driving myself nuts waiting for this biopsy which is scheduled for Tuesday. Thanks in advance

Mammograms and ultrasounds "see" different things, so this isn't unusual. Mammograms are limited by nreast density and are very unspecific. They are just being prudent. Most breast biopsies are benign.

I agree with MelissaDallas. It's hard not to worry, but try not to "borrow trouble" and head too far down the what if road. Good luck for b9 biopsy results!

Always better to be safe than sorry. It is good they are doing biopsy. Something like 85% of biopsies are benign. So odds are in your favor it's nothing. Hoping for good results!

Just wanted to post that I got my results back and it was all good. TOTALLY BENIGN FINDING of something called Apocrine metaplasia!!!!! i just want to put this out there :To anyone who stumbles across this post who may be in my situation, remember odds are it's not cancer for you either. Try and stay calm and positive while you wait for results. And to everyone on this board who is dealing with bad news- I wish you nothing but the best of luck moving forward

    Peace
