Newly Diagnosed With DCIS- Treatment Other Than Mastectomy?

Hi there-

Had a prophylactic bilateral mastectomy June 8, due to left breast showing a pathology of ALH, ADH, and a radial scar. The radiologist felt there was 'more going on', so no surprise the path report showed DCIS. Hormone receptors are positive.

Per my request, I am seeing an oncologist on Friday. Breast surgeon has stated mastectomy is standard, and no further treatment is necessary. I am reading some conflicting articles in regard to this, however.

Anyone else receiving hormone therapy, and if so, is there a guideline followed that indicates ones need to do so?

-Leslie

Are you ER/PR positive? Did they test serial nodes? Normally they don't test for HER2 for DCIS.

But yes, the standard of care for DCIS is radiation if you have a lumpectomy and nothing else if you have a BMX.

Thank you for the response, MinusTwo-

No, they did not test serial nodes. ER/PR both positive.

My DX was DCIS stage 0 high grade level 3 Er+Pr+ Comedo. I did a lumpectomy with oncoplastic same day June7,2017. I will begin radiation treatment Friday July7,2017. Why is your Dr recommending Mastectomy as the only option

Many women here get hormone therapy after BMX for ER+/PR+ DCIS.

I had mx for multi-focal dcis, so no rads for me. I did see an MO to discuss any further treatment, but as I was ER/PR-, hormone treatment wasn't likely to be beneficial. So I only had surgery (plus recon) and I'm 14 years NED.
