About to lose reconstruction after two horrible years
- My first surgeon botched my reconstruction when he put an implant on the healthy side but left it about 3" lower than my mastectomy/radiated side. It took l lot of waiting and two very extensive surgeries to repair that. In my last, what should have been final, surgery, my new doctor decided to make a huge gash on the radiated side to create a nipple bump. The skin was so compromised that the tissue died. I have terrible, terrible pain and he and his assistant are completely dismissive of my concerns. I need to go in and allow this charletan to operate on me again in 3 days, even though I don't trust him at all. Chances are I will lose the reconstruction after working my butt off for 2 years of hell to keep it. I am just devastated. Has anyone else had such an awful outcome after such a long time? If I lose this reconstruction, I cannot imagine that I will ever be happy again in my life. No more travel, no more socializing with friends. My life as I know it will be over

Why would you even consider going back to the same doctor?
-
Ditto to Minus2. Cancel it and research out a good reputable ps in your area. No way would I let anyone touch me much less operate on me unless I have every confidence in him/her.
-
I have to let him operate because it needs to be done immediately. Today is Friday and surgery is a Monday. I don't have the luxury of seeking a second opinion. I am trapped. I have a weekend of hell to get through in the meantime. My pain is so bad I just took an OxyContin (which I never, ever do). No one will take my concerns seriously
-
Sara - you are NEVER trapped. I do understand immediately, but unless you are somewhere in the wilderness - there are other plastic surgeons around. But you are choosing to go ahead with this doctor that you don't trust. I do hope every thing goes OK. Please do let us know.
-
sara, I'm flat and fabulous, and I can tell you that being flat is not the end of the world. In fact, I feel 100% normal, and my body is my own without any pain or issues being flat. My life is back to normal. Woman are rocking being flat, and the clothing choices are amazing without bras or boobs, so please realize it's not over if you lose the fake boobs inside you - they don't make you any more or less of a woman. Perhaps join our flat and fabulous facebook site and see for yourself.
-
Nice, Lisey. Calling us out on fake boobs. I remember your post that was deleted. Please don't start again.. Save the little digs for your fb group..
-
Agreed. The discussion is not about reconstruction. The issue is that Sara does not trust the doctor who is scheduled for the surgery to do ANYTHING. I don't blame her.
-
I didn't take Lisey's comment that way at all. I truly appreciate any supportive comments, even if they're not what I "want" to hear.
Today we had to go to the ER because the pains I'm having are intolerable. This is one of the best medical facilities in the country, and no one could tell me why I'm having so much pain. I'm back home with oxycodone until the surgery. I'll post once it's over. Thanks, everyone
-
SaraI'm definitely not going to push being flat on you. What I'm going to suggest take time to find a plastic surgeon you can trust.
-
I wish I could but I am living with excruciating pain. I can barely breathe. I think this needs to be done asap.
-
I assume pain meds don't help? Just hate to see you go with a surgeon you don't care for. Sounds like anyone would be better than him.
-
Sara, I'm glad you can see I'm offering my support to you. While others are addressing the issue with the idiot doctor, I'm addressing the last of your post saying if you lose your implants your life will be over. As someone who removed reconstruction from my body, I'm offering my support that you may just be surprised with the pain gone and just you how you will feel. So many women remove implants and end up so much happier and out of pain. It's definitely not the end of the world to be flat... I too had an idiot doctor, and because of his arrogance I had to have multiple surgeries to fix his mistakes. I'm just so glad to be done with it all, I finally switched surgeons to finish up making me perfectly flat. Best of luck to you and most importantly getting out of pain so you can mentally heal.
-
Sara- I agree a different PS is in order. I totally get wantingbit out asap and I totally get not wanting to lose this recon. But perhaps this is your body's way of telling you that this is not the right recon for you or that flat is the way to go, that's a very personal decision and if you feel flat us not the way then have you considered natural tissue reconstruction? I can tell you that the doctors at the center for breast restoration surgery in New Orleans are #1 in their field of breast reconstruction and take on women who have had their recon botched (even horribly disfiguring botched) and corrected it amazingly. Their failure rate is just 1% national failure rate is 10%) and their infection rate is less than 2%. Women travel from literally all over the world (yes world) to have them do their recon or correct a botched one. And they can usually get you in pretty quick for surgery with consult done over the phone and email. Before letting that other PS touch you again I'd give New Orleans a call. Feel free to PM me on bco if want to talk or have questions. Here's their website (and I found does have lots of before and after pics including botched befores): www.breastcenter.com

I think it is outrageous that people are pushing "flat" on this traumatised and vulnerable sister. She just wants the implants out. Whatever someone's agenda is about her ultimate decision should be off limits.
I lived with horrible, undiagnosed leg and hip pain for close to 2 years, until its cause was finally discovered and fixed. I know the misery of existing in a world of unremitting pain.
All my best Sara, as you get through this temporary situation.
-
I agree pupmom. It's the usual suspects. We will never forget Lisey's thread where she absolutely used let's just say inappropriate words to describe what those of us who choose recon are. She's the cheerleader for flat. As was said in the now deleted thread, one has to wonder if she is trying to convince herself that she loves being flat. I've never seen anyone root for something more esp on these boards. Join the group of thousands! You too can be flat and fabulous! And here all the while why we are trying to help her cope with pain and the issue that her surg sucks. Shameful. OP doesn't know the history of Lisey's threads, or she is just being very kind.. seriously. Stop.

Hi Sara,
I know pain can be debilitating and that you want to do whatever you can, as soon as you can, to stop it. However, I must agree with previous posters and urge you to run from a surgeon who has already proven himself incompetent. Please consider calling/consulting another ps before you submit to another surgery from this ps, even if you have to bear the pain for a bit longer.
I felt very strongly that recon was important to me and was fortunate to have a good outcome with just the initial surgery (one step implants), but know that recon is neither important nor desireable for everyone. But, if it is important to you, don't fool around with someone who has already proven he is not competent. You may, indeed lose the current recon, but if you find an expert, you can end up with something that really works for you in the end. Your road has already been rough, and whether you continue to pursue recon or not, please find a ps who can do right by you. Your current ps has proven that he's not the one.
-
Artista, I totally agree.
-
Sara, I am so sorry you are going through this suffering. My first implant failed too and then I had it removed and went on to radiation. I have been living without another reconstruction for several years now. Really your life goes on and you make adjustments. Of course I wish I had not lost my breast and reconstruction but I enjoy my life, travel, do vigorous exercise, socialize and most everything I did before, and many on this board do too.
-
Sara - Special K has had 14 surgeries and is finally just fine. You can PM her if you want to hear her story.
-
Please everyone, can we stick to the current discussion/topic and not bring up old threads and what was said in the past.
We're here to support each other and offer our opinions and experiences to each other.
In the end, each will make their own decision on what's best for them.
Let's just be here for one another.
-
thank you, Moderators, that's exactly what needed to be said.
I did survive surgery today. I don't know the whole story because I was completely out of it, but my dr told my husband that the previous doctor, who had done the initial botch-job, sliced up my capsule on the radiated side and all that had calcified from radiation. That was probably what was causing all that unexplained pain. If this hadn't happened, it sounds like I would have lost the implant down the road. As it is, he was able to clean that up, along with scar tissue that had been giving me a terrible time since day 1. No guarantees of course, but he thinks I have a good chance of salvaging it now. I've never been so scared in my life but I'm so glad it's over.
Thank you to everyone who offered their support--it helped a lot!
-
With all due respect mods, many of us do take offense to our choice of doing recon as fake boobs. How about moderating on indirect or direct attacks on people's choices. That thread may be gone but it's never forgotten. It's one thing to offer up your opinion but how would the flat folks feel if I called them fake because after all, it's not the norm to have no breasts either. Just saying.
-
Glad to hear things went well. Hope you have a speedy recovery Sarah.
-
Sara,
So happy to hear that today turned out well. I think some of thought that the doctor who botched things was doing your surgery today. Glad it was someone who recognized the problem that was causing you so much pain. Rest up and take care
-
I didn't trust my 2nd doctor either because he was the one who made the terrible choice to slice my radiated tissue to create a bipple bump without explaining the risks to me. I'm still not happy about that, but it sounds like a lot of the complications were related to what had bee done earlier with Dr. #1 -
Artista, you need to stop bullying me. just stop. Foobs is the term used by most women on here, including myself when I had TEs... "Fake Boobs". is what foobs means. The thread mentioned was deleted at my request due to people following me in other forums and attacking me. LET IT GO and stop harrassing me personally. The mods have requested you stop bringing it up and focusing on me and I'm asking you as well.
Sara, It's such a horrible situation to be in. I'm glad the pain is gone and you can finally heal.
-
I really, really appreciate the support many of you gave me, and the suggestion about the clinic in New Orleans, which I will definitely keep in mind, and the name of the person who endured 14 surgeries to get there too--very good, constructive suggestions. It seems that I overstated my concerns about Dr. #2. He's actually very highly respected, but I didn't feel like I could trust him because he had made that slice for a nipple without explaining the risk of my losing the recon because of it. I would not have elected to have him create that skin bump. However, he really stepped up to the plate and (hopefully) fixed what could have been a disastrous loss of the recon due to Dr.#1's earlier work.
What really makes me unhappy is that my reaching out for some support on this forum brought out such nasty interchanges among some of you. To those who offered real support, concern, and suggestions, thank you. To those who used my post as an opportunity to attack other users, I'm ashamed that I gave you the opportunity.
-
Lisey, just stop. Many of us know what you really meant by fake boob from your prior past posts, and it wasn't the cute term we even use, foob. So you stop with disrespectful terms and we'll stop being reminded about how you really think about people who choose recon. I'm done in this thread and hopefully for good. Best wishes to you Sara.
-
wow this is a spicy thread.
Pupmom what was wrong with your hip and how was the pain eliminated?
-
Sarah I'm so happy the surgery went well. Now rest and heal. The person mentioned is very pleased with her results. I can't thank her enough for being with my husband and I when my surgeon took my bandages off. Yes I'm flat but not by choice. Specialk truly is a special person.
