Nodule

I just received the results of my mammogram and the finding is a nodule in the left breast upper inner quadrant at 11o'clock. The recommendation is to have an ultrasound. Also, I have "scattered areas of fibroglandular density" (I always knew my breasts did not look like others), but there is no indication of how much/percentage.

Any one have a nodule, and if so what do I need to be aware of, what questions should I ask, how long does it take to get the results from the ultrasound-on the spot?

    “Scattered areas of fibroglandular density” are perfectly normal, especially if they don’t change from year to year. On the continuum, they fall between dense on one end and fatty on the other.

    An ultrasound can rule in a cyst or rule it out (if it squishes under pressure, it’s a cyst). Unlike with a mammogram, usually the radiologist and not a tech does the ultrasound and can tell you what he or she sees right then & there. If it is not a cyst, a biopsy is usually recommended, because the ultrasound can only identify size, shape, behavior, contrast and reflectivity of sound waves relative to surrounding tissue. It takes a biopsy to determine what kind of cells it’s made of.

    thank you for your comments. I have to wait until Monday to make an appointment for an ultrasound and I'm sure it will take 2 weeks or longer to get one. The waiting will drive me crazy!

    When you have a DX of any type of BC (DCIS/IDC/ILC/IBC) is the time to come to 'Diagnosed and Waiting For Test Results. Once there is a DX of BC -there are quite a few different/caring tests/Scans that can/will be ordered.
