I'm a 4 month cancer survivor (stage 1, lumpectomy & radiation, tamoxefin for 2  months, in my 50s).  I just went for my annual gyne exam and doc ordered a "baseline" pelvic ultra sound, so she can monitor me each year becuz of the tamox.

I received a call that the ultra sound shows fluid in the lining of my uterus and a biopsy has been scheduled.  I am SO scared!!! I did some research that suggested this means cancer!

Has anyone experienced this?

Thank You!!!

    Hi Deb,

Sorry you are going through this. I don't have experience with this but did see that infection can cause fluid in the uterine lining. And there are other causes. I am hoping that yours will turn out to be something else. In the meantime, while you wait, try to remember that your doc is being vigilant since you have had breast cancer. I won't tell you not to research or study - because for some of us it helps to look for answers on reputable sites and gather info.

    Hugs

Deb- are you pre or peri-menopausal? I ask because most endometrial cancer is found in post menopausal women.  These are the possibilities: your biopsy, which I assume will be either a d&c or an endometrial biopsy will show whether it is nothing or it is something - perhaps endometrial cancer. If it is endometrial cancer, it was probably caught extremely early - before you experienced any symptoms - that is the thing with endometrial cancer - there are symptoms.

I too was being monitored - and over the course of 3 years had two d&cs due to endometrial thickening, my gyn stopped with the transvaginal ultrasounds and instead put me on the normal protocol for observation of women on tamoxifen which is wait for symptoms. and that is how my endometrial cancer was discovered -  I experienced spotting. ultimately had a total hysterectomy and need nothing more than regular exams as follow-up.  And here I am, doing fine and WHAT EVER is found, YOU WILL DO FINE TOO.

If it makes you feel any better,  my gyn told me last week that she has seen endometrial cancer only 1 time in 27 years of practice and that the woman was bleeding.  Everything will probably be OK for you but I would be scared too.  Hang in there.

So sorry to hear that you are so frightened. It's unfortunate that your doctor didn't prepare you better by informing you that if there is a problem, it is fairly simple to deal with. I experienced uterine bleeding after 2 and 1/2 years on tamoxifen. I immediately called my oncologist who told me to stop taking tamoxifen and to schedule an appointment with my gynecologist. I saw the gynecologist the next day, he did an endometrial biopsy in his office, informed me that it was unlikely to be cancer and if it was, it was very treatable. He sent me for a transvaginal ultrasound which showed uterine polyps. He removed the polyp. The endometrial biopsy proved benign. My oncologist recommended I discontinue the tamoxifen, indicating that I had the benefits of over two years on the medication. Two months later I experienced more bleeding, again saw my gynecologist, another ultrasound, and a second polyp removed. My Dr. told me that this was clearly caused by the tamoxifen, said it might happen again but not to worry as it is very treatable. At worst, a hysterectomy would cure uterine cancer. That is easy for a doctor to say, especially to someone past childbearing years, but it is in fact true. I sometime wish that I could have competed five years of Tamoxifen for my DCIS but do not think it was worth the risk of more uterine issues. I wish you the best and hope this helps.
