Gardening, anyone?

Enerva - You wouldn't want me to name your plants. In past, I would name plants rather childlike. First letter of the name of the plant, must have a name starting with that letter. Jake the Wandering Jew, Fanny the Fern . . . you get the picture . . . . and its a sad, sad picture. I don't name anymore, I have too many. But I do talk to them and stroke their leaves. My first houseplant did not go by the above naming rule. It was a rubber tree plant that I had for many years. His name was George. I particularly like your wall pots on the patio. I love hanging plants and could imagine some really nice hanging plants in them. I am curious, since I am so not a city dweller. Where do you go to purchase plants? We have the standard box stores, like Lowes and Home Depot but my favorites for houseplants are the privately owned garden centers or the mom and pop that has a greenhouse in their back yard. For veggies I have customers that we generally swap seeds and share what worked or not.
-
gardener lol I also do the same I talk to my plants and also like to have my hand on their foliage wile I talk lol ha ha ha sometimes I wonder if the people on the building across ever see me and think I am crazy? Well I ll think of the names I must tell you even though I write down the botanical name for my plants I never seem to be able to say it correctly but I am Spanish and so is most English words lol
My favorite place is sheridan gardens also we have a place called Terra but far from me so I don't go often. We have a street called kinstong road and it full of small flower places which also sell good house plants.
But sheridan is one of my favorites and also some of the far away places up airport Rd north of Toronto.
Yes I plan to find some plants to hang on those walls

Denise-G, Hi and Welcome!!
Your center garden is lovely.
I haven't given up on (F) and (V) gardening, but do less and less planting and weeding.
I'm enjoying the pics, and once again need to get caught up on the chitchat.
Husband and I finished planting the (V) garden.
bush green bean seeds
4 grape tomato plants
mammoth sunflower seeds
amaranthus - love lies bleeding seeds
Son is looking forward to the 1st onion sets (scallions).
So far no late frost in the North Country.

Creative planting using a beer holder turn planter
Red geranium I wintered and that has come back beautifully
Blooming oleander
-
Oh wow jazz love them all
I just saw my strawberries plant has it first flower
So happy
-
It's been a busy few days here and I've got a lot of ready and eye candy to catch up on. I'll be back in a bit!
-
Jazzy. . .I love oleander. We bought a couple of plants years ago at a nursery in Charleston -- where they grow everywhere. They were beautiful that year and did not survive the Georgia winter. One of the things I want to do next year is some large pot containers which I can bring in during the cold months.

-
Scottie- one of the things I was told when I bought it by the nursery is to be sure it is south facing to ensure the best chance of winter survival. I was worried mine would tank, we get cold weather here although not as much the past few years. But back around 2011, we had a super cold period with -8 degrees and it killed some stuff, including some trees that were on the way out with the drought. My new trees I put in the following year are doing well though.
If you have space, bring them in. I also know they may be toxic to animals though so be careful of that?
-
They were planted in the highway median between Houston and Galveston. Lovely sight. They are toxic to people too. There was a case of someone using an oleander stick to hold a hot dog in the fire and they became very ill from eating the hot dog. I have a list of plants toxic to cats. It's a wonder they've survived all these years. Although the list may be playing it safe because it listed mother-in-law's tongue which my cat chewed to bits and was not affected. After owning one plant-eating cat, I have no more house plants.

Cowing tongue cactus going to town with blooms now
-
Love the cactus Jazz. . .we only have one that blooms and the flowers did not last long.

I thought this was so funny. I'm not a beer drinker . . . guess I'll have to try wine corks.
-
Gardennerd- that is hilarious. I like the idea of planting corks and seeing what happens!
-
-
Gardenenrd, LOL @ the bottle top and cork garden. Hmmm, maybe I should plant some $20 bills?!
Enerva, absolutely love the patio gardening you are doing. You have done so much with the limited space. Sorry to hear the squirrels are still being pests. The video of the hummingbird is amazing! We have lots of hummers because of all the trumpet vine I have on a fence line, but who would have thought one would become so tame.
Jazzy, those blooms are so pretty. It makes me want to plant some cactus here, but DH would probably get mad if he got stuck by them. He already dislikes my jujubee trees because they have thorns. And that oleander I really like
CoachVicky, what an awesome raised bed area and beautiful yard.
I finally got the rest of the garden covered with straw. This was pretty fresh straw as I am seeing lots of grass sprouting in it. Grrrrrr.. Luckily all I have to do is lift the straw and the grass comes right up that way. The zukes and spaghetti squash seem to be coming along nicely in growth. I expect to see blossoms in another week or so. I think I am going to cover the plants this year because I detest squash bugs and I always seem to have them. :-( My melons and cukes are a lot further behind in growth but I am holding out high hopes for them. Pepper plants are finally starting to grow a little bigger and one has little peppers. A few more have blossom buds.
My shed is finally organized. Yeah! Now DH is going to put in some steps for me as it is too high for me to just walk into. I have been stepping up on concrete blocks. I thought about having him make a patio for the shed but it would have to be quite large to accomodate the doors. So I am just going for the steps now while I ponder the idea. I wish I was more of a visual person.

Gardennerd. . .make it craft beer and I love it. Lol

Hoping we get a thunderboomer this afternoon. It would help with watering the garden.
-
M0mmy, we're getting thunder right now but no rain yet. We haven't gotten any rain in 3 weeks. It sure would be nice ☔️
Jazzy, loving the cactus blooms. So pretty!
Gardennerd, that is just tooo funny! My hubby would be sitting in the garden waiting for every bottle to pop up. lol
I made the mistake of mentioning wanting a boat dock so I could get in and out of the boat and our paddle boat easier. Guess what we did all weekend? Yeap, we started a boat dock. I've also mentioned I need a storage shed of my own for garden/pool stuff. 🤞
I'll get new pics of my garden today and post some of those later tonight. I just got back from having a tooth pulled and I'm a bit ouchy lol
-
Wishing you the same luck on getting the new shed, Lori, as in getting the dock.
MOmmy I would love some more rain too. Temps in the mid 90s all week, Only a 20% chance of rain though.
-
I took a nap to be woken up by thunder and pouring rain! Yay!!
-
Didn't get any rain, so I will have to water the garden today.
-
I loved the rain but so did the weeds in my garden. The one thing I love about doing the straw bales is that I can mow the grass and weeds between the rows instead of pulling or hoeing them. I should call it Lori's Lazy Garden instead of Lori's Straw Bale Garden lol
Here are a few pictures I took yesterday. I need to take more today to see how much growth the rain we got yesterday caused
My Romano Beans are loaded.
My carrots have really taken off
Strawberries are loaded, makes me get a rumbly in my tumbly!
Cucumbers and zucchini are all blooming
My poor lonely turnip
Tomatoes are also blooming
Sweet banana peppers
I'm trying to be as patient as I can be but I wish they'd hurry up so I can eat them! I've read that the peppers and tomatoes grown in bales are smaller plants and larger peppers and tomatoes... we'll see I guess. If there's substantial growth from the rain I'll post both pics so we can compare them. If nothing else it gives me something to do 😜
-
lori love your garden.
So here she is showing me some petals lol and so so slow still coming
-
Just went out to do the watering and I saw one of my tomato plants has a flower on it!!!!!
-
M0mmy, awesome! Tomatoes coming soon! Yummy
Enerva, what a beautiful shade of red! I love it!
-
Enerva, what a lovely rose that is. Wishing you many more blooms!
Lori, I am just constantly amazed at the healthy looking plants you have in those bales. I am gently envious that you also have such a nice variety of veggies you are growing. I have cut way back because of the almost constant tiredness I have, Luckily my pepper plants will almost take care of themselves. I took a few pictures last night of the garden and will post them later too. It's going to be close to 100 today and then we will have triple digits for the weekend. UGH. But that is typical here. I need some of that lovely rain too.
MOmmy I get excited too as my plants have "babies." :-)
-
Yep, means hubby and I will have to start putting in the supports for the plants soon
-
love my garden.
-
Might get hubby to start helping stake up the plants tonight or this weekend at the latest
-
wow thank you all for sharing your pictures.
All so beautiful.
Yes this plant is going toake me very happy lots flower coming
