    Mom's Stats

    Stage 1/Grade 3 Tumor

    Lumpectomies - 11/2016 and 1/2017

    ER/PR+/HER2-

Paclitaxel started 4/19/2017 - 6 rounds have been completed - 6 more to go.

Coldcaps are doing beautifully by the way - she still has all of her hair -

Hey ladies, this is just a quick question I have. My mom is going into her seventh round of chemo this week and she has been suffering from eye problems, worse than what she's ever had before. Tunnel vision, black spots, blurry spots, the works. She saw a special doctor that deals with eyes on chemotherapy and he told her that all of this was from the chemotherapy and most likely everything would reverse once her chemo was finished. Has anyone ever had problems that were premanent? And if so, what do we do? Will she have to stop driving or are their ways to counteract this? Any suggestions would be great, thank you so much. :)

How old is your Mom? Eye issues do come on with age.

I didn't have eye issues during Chemo (4DD A/C neoadjuvant, 12 weekly Taxol adjuvant). Since the end I have had 2 cataracts, and 3 detached retinas. My Eye DR say that the cataracts were because of me having very light green eyes and a lot of time spent outdoors all my life. The retina detachments were probably at least partially because of the cataract surgeries as those surgeries make one more prone to possibly having issues (according to my Retina Specialist). The 2nd detachment was 4 weeks after the first in same eye. The first so called 'Retina Specialist' was at the local Eye Institute was a quack and her lack of timely TX would have cost me the sight in my right eye IF I hadn't raised Hades and got in to see a private Retina Specialist. He did a 'conservative' TX first but it had been longer than ideal because of the Quack and then did re-detache 4 weeks later so then surgery was done. That was 4 yrs ago. About a yr later the other eye detached but I was able to get into my fantastic Dr within 3 yrs of it detaching and getting the less invasive TX.

There is also Age related Macular Degeration that 'just happens' to some of us as we age.

Neither my Cataract Surgeon nor my Retina Specialist 'blamed' having done Chemo on my eye issues. Just my eyes being so light green, lots of time outdoors for the cataracts and the cataract surgery (and possible light green eye color) for the detached retinas. But also getting older - was 65 when cataracts, 67 for first retina.

My Eye Drs were not associated with the Cancer Center. From what you said she was told - IF it were me - I'd be getting a Second opinion from another Facility. Sight is too precious and delicate to just wait and see if it gets better after Chemo.

Unfortunately, I have also had vision changes with chemo. As far as side effects go, this is my biggest complaint. I am only 31 so I know mine is not age related. It has also gotten worse since I started weekly Taxol treatments (I was previously receiving DD A/C and experienced some changes, but not as bad as I am now). I am also at around the same treatment as your mom, I will get my 6th treatment this Friday. My oncologist said that vision changes are very common with chemo and that it could take up to 6 months for my vision to stabilize, and when it does I may need glasses (I don't currently wear glasses or contacts).I am still working during treatment, and notice that my vision is much worse after spending the day on my computer. Since it seems to improve over the weekend I am optimistic it will go away. I know this doesn't specifically answer your question, but just wanted you to know she is not alone.

I also have vision issues while in treatment and went to my ophthalmologist. She gave me drops for dry eyes (which can actually be when your eyes are leaking) & told me not to get a new RX for glasses until 6-12 months after chemo. All my issues resolved and the prescription turned out the same.

My eye issues began after my last chemo 2 weeks ago, which really laid me out. I have a leaky left eye, which is my better eye and blurry vision. The opthamologist gave me eye drops too and I was told it could take a few months to get back to normal. I feel fine but look a mess, lol

My eye doc said yes, vision can change because of chemo. My eyes are very dry, they form crusts, and I'm seeing more floaters. In the last few weeks, I have noticed a small area of my vision that is kind of circular with wavy lines. It comes and goes.

If you pull up some of the online chemo info sheets, you will see that some of them do indeed cause vision problems. Staring at tablets, smart phones and computer screens doesn't help either. Force yourselves to blink more.
