I had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago and my nipple and sorrounding areas are super sensitive and affects my quality of life. I'm wearing a "toga" at home so that no fabric will touch it. Any idea if this is permanent or ways to elleviate the pain? I take Tylenol but prolonged use is not good. I also apply Lidocaine topical cream but relief only last for a short period of time. Thanks for any suugestions or comments.

I was reminded by the wise women on this forum, Valencia, that a lumpectomy (called more properly a partial mastectomy) is major surgery. I had forgotten until I read my operation report that there are many internal stitches. I only had surgical glue on the outside. All the healing takes a toll on you - it's exhausting and it hurts. The pain will lessen with time. Did you have a sentinel node biopsy? That's what really bothered me. I kept a small pillow under my arm so I had little skin-to-skin contact. I was able to wear a regular bra right away and that support was comforting. That way, there's no accidental contact with a shirt.

    Hope you're feeling better soon.

I had a lumpectomy on May 24th and my breast is quite sore to the touch. Mine feels like it is engorged (like I'm breastfeeding and need to pump) and the nipple is sensitive. I'm assuming this will all go away with time. I haven't been taking anything for pain but suggest you stay on top of it if the pain is affecting your quality of life. Sorry I'm not more help.

I had a mastectomy and have areas that are numb as well as areas that are very sensitive. My PT told me the nerves get irritated with the surgery and that leads to sensitivity. She recommended gradual increased stimulation - exactly what you don't want to do - but it works! Start with a very soft cloth and gentle wiping motions on the problem areas and move up to rougher fabrics, shower, drumming fingers. As long as the healing looks good - it might solve your sensitivity problems.

Valencia - my LX with SNB was 3 weeks ago today. Still have soreness, numbess under the armpit and down my inner arm, and some sensitivity. But it seems better each day. I have been wearing a sports bra and the support seems to help. Also doing exercises and massage that my LE therapist told me to do. If it is not improving I would check back in with your dr. Healing takes time as nerves were disturbed. When in doubt .... I say always ask your dr. Even if they tell you what you are experiencing is normal, it can put your mind at ease but if it doesn't seem right they need to know. Hope things settle down for you soon.

Your nerves get all messed up with these types of surgery. It will take awhile probably to go back to normal. I still get weird tingling in my armpit and down my arm if I touch a certain area on my breast--and my surgery was 7 months ago. It's so weird. But you're only 3 weeks out...so you are still very much post-op.

I'm 2½ weeks post lumpectomy and have the same issues. My incisions aren't bothering me anymore, but the sensitivity and numbness in my breast is bothersome. I was going to call my doctor today to ask about it and thought to check here. It's so nice to know I'm not the only one!
