Managing Nausea w Sweet Potato - Anyone else?

Options

Hello All,

In dealing with the chemo-induced side effects of nausea, I accidentally stumbled upon something that was really effective at relieving my nausea, and I wanted to ask if anyone else has had a similar experience?

I found that when I ate a few bites of sweet potato when I felt nauseous, it dramatically reduced my nausea. Of course, I also carried with me my prescription bottle of Zofran everywhere I went, but I found that if I ate sweet potato first, I didn't need the pills as much.

To give you a bit of background, this was when I was on chemo infusion of Platinum Gem-Carbo for a recurrent breast cancer tumor, and my nausea experience with this medication was severe. I was really miserable and kept gagging in the chemo infusion suite and afterward for the next several days, almost the entire week. I felt awful. Coincidentally, my roommate had a cat that was also at the time suffering from chronic nausea, and the vet had recommended that we feed it pumpkin, as that is a sort of home remedy used to relieve cat & dog stomach issues. So, I was desperate enough to try this cat remedy. The reason I ended up eating sweet potato instead of pumpkin was because I had easy access to sweet potato, so I decided to just try that. I know they're completely different vegetables but somehow in my mind there was a connection. Well, it worked amazingly well for me - sweet potato dramatically reduced my nausea.

So I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or heard of such a thing? I didn't find much on google, except for using pumpkin for pets.

Best,

Monica

    Hi Monica,

I only have anecdotal "evidence" as well as some hasty research, when my dog had horrible inflammation of the entire gi tract, with awful vomiting. I found information that suggests pumpkin and sweet potato have anti-inflammatory properties (large amounts in sweet potato), and the benefits were noticeable when I added this to his diet. I know that dogs and people are very different ;), but they had him on 3 different people gi meds.
