Not quite a horder - decluttering
Comments

Thanks ladies. I do some volunteering during the season. Also have season tickets for a number of concerts - so it's not like I'm lonely. I didn't mean it to sound like a whine - it was just such a surprise. MrsM - I didn't think about gift cards, although funny that I usually get some for them. And I like the pedicure idea. Thanks again.
-
Good morning ladies- have not checked in here for a bit and see all of you are doing some great work to declutter, do mindful shopping, etc. I have continued to get the closets cleaned out, mostly done, things to donations as well as more rounds to consignment. My next tasks is to reorg the shelving in the garage, which I plan to do some work on this week.
DivineMsM- I am doing the same thing you are doing, getting rid of duplicates and asking myself when I buy someting "do I have something like this already or am I replacing something?"
Mustlovepoodles- I came to the realization a couple years ago that I have far more Xmas stuff than I do or will ever use. I am single and live alone, and usually working end of the year deadlines with my consulting work or will go away. So I just decided I only need a bit of stuff. I have only had company here at my house once for Xmas and even if I have it in the future, don't feel a need to decorate to the max. As Divine said, too much pressure for women to make things perfect for others. Not what it is about? I have donated a lot to Habitat Restore and will do more again this year.
-
MinusTwo- I like the idea of saying you would like consumables from to your son. If you are on your own for Xmas, a gift cert to a local resort where you can go relax and get spa treatments would be awesome. I have very little family and the ones I have never come for Xmas so the burden is on me to travel (ugh). Most of the time I go to the local hot springs and just check out of the holiday madness. My sister always sends me money for the get away, which to me is just perfect!
Try doing a mini get away at Xmas sometime, you may find it most enjoyable and your friends (who are cooking and cleaning) will likely be jealous of you!
-
Aww MinusTwo, I'm sorry. I have a grown son who deigns to grace us with his presence, but doesn't believe in giving presents. Ever. No cards either. He claims he is an anarchist and a nihilist, but he has no problem accepting cash from us. At 30 he's still doing the emo thing.
Mother is not doing well, not eating solids at all. Drinking only some. She's probably not ingesting more than 400 calories a day. She is at assisted living and my sister & I are at the house going through stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. Boxes of random cards, unopened bills from 2009, bank ststements, recipes, pictures. I have to go through every bit of it piece by piece to make sure I find all the stuff with social security numbers and account numbers. It is maddening and slow going.
At the moment I have a huge pile of stuff to go to the thrift store and I have barely even scratched the surface. In the sunroom I have a huge pile of stuff that goes to the trash. I wish I had a dumpster because this stuff is not going to fit in the trash can.
Meanwhile my DH is killing himself back at home trying to prepare the house for renovations. We're trying to get the house on the market in Atlanta and I'm down on the Gulf Coast taking care of my mother. This is so stressful
-
Mustlovepoodles- very stressful time for you with all the things going on. Please take care of yourself friend.
-
Poodles, yes it does sound stressful my heart goes out to you. It is a lot to be juggling.
MinusTwo, you do not come across as whining at all.
Jazzy, glad to read that you continue to make progress sorting thru different sections of your house and garage.
-
I'm just enjoying the last evening in May!
I am going to do catch-up laterrr.
Enjoy the........................

I sorted through the medications this morning. I found a bunch of expired OTC meds and I took them to the police station safe drop box today.
Our Police Department was one of the first in our state to set up a safe drop box for expired/unneeded medicine to help prevent drug abuse. Most any medicine can go in (tablets, liquid, patches, and pet meds), except needles.
Then I organized our Rx medication box, especially DD's meds, which are being tweaked at every monthly med check.

MinusTwo--the holidays are so hard, so much emotion tied up in them. Memories of past Christmases, hopes for current and future ones, it's hard to be rational about it all.
Wrenn44--what a wonderful thing for the Senior Center director and social work to do!
DivineMrsM--going point about needing to spell things out.
Mustlovepoodles--check with a few companies in your area about the dumpster. I found one company that rents a small dumpster and empties it once a month for only $34 a month. An extra empty can be arranged for only $19. I was surprised how affordable it is. Sorry to hear about your Mom, and the mountain of work you and your sister are working through. So hard to so far away from home with so much going on.
Mominator--good for you! Keeping up with the meds can be a full time job all by itself!

I am down in AL with my mother, who is now in hospice and fading every day. One sister and brother have been staying at her junk-y house and holy cow! We've been in a cleaning frenzy. So far we have cleaned out one large room and two small rooms! Mother would kill us if she knew, but we have to do it.
-
Poodles, I am sorry to hear about your mom in hospice. Your mom's things were once the stuff that surrounded her and brought her comfort, but they are of no use to her now. There is no use to try and memorialize her life by hanging on to most of that stuff other than a few things that might have some meaning. I hope you are purging without guilt. It sounds like you are making progress with her house so glad to here that.
-
And whilst I am here whippng mother's house into shape, DH is at home supervising painters and dry wallers geting our house ready to sell.
-
Poodles: I'm sorry to hear about your Mom and all the stress you are dealing with.
Agree with asking the group home first if they want to buy the house. Seems like it would be a good thing for them to have 2 homes next door to each other.
De-cluttering sisters: Happy to hear of your progress.
I'm back!! It's been a lot of work, getting moved and settled in. I got rid of a lot of stuff before I moved, and now that I'm here, in this smaller space, I see there are things that just will not fit or work out for one reason or not. So a new pile is collecting in the carport. 3 trash bags of clothes for donation. I FINALLY went thru my pants and donated the ones I've been keeping,,, sure that I will lose weight again, and fit in those jeans,,, well, they are gone now. Hopefully someone will get them who can wear them.
Wanted to mention a book I'm reading. Clear your Clutter with Feng Shui by Karen Kingston. She explores how clutter can affect you, and why people end up with clutter. Many good ideas so far, and I'm only half way thru. I'm into Feng Shui, and it's been a while since I read up on it. (I did my last home), so I grabbed a few books from the library. So far, this one is the best of the bunch.
-
glennie, so nice you got moved, and that you are able to assess the new place and decide more stuff is not necessary so you are editing your belongings even more to keep what you really want.
The book title is interesting, and I have dabbled in feng shui over the years. I can get the book thru my library so I will put it on my list to read. I love having a book to keep me motivated in the decluttering department.
-
Poodles, so sorry to hear about your mom. Such a hard time for everyone. And to be getting your own house ready to sell, what a stressful time for you!
Glennie--congrats on getting moved into the new place! Funny how space available affects how we look at stuff. Keep up the good work!
-
We emptied our living room to paint the ceiling and walls. Couldn't believe how big it looked. Sure doesn't look big with all our stuff crammed into it.
-
A friend of mine posted this video today on FB and thought you would all appreciate it!
-
Jazzy - GREAT. Thanks for posting.
-
Wonderful! He is so right.
-
I talked with my husband today. I'm still down here with mother and he is up in Atlanta with the house renovations. He actually told me not to come back because the house is such a mess. I can only imagine what my house looks like. One thing for sure, he is ready to get in there and do some serious decluttering.
-
That is a great side effect of the remodel work. Wish I knew how to get my DH started.
-
OMG, my DH let the painters paint my lovely wood beams white! Too late to save them now. I sure wish he had asked me, if he wasn't sure. I know we had that conversation before I left. Foo!
-
Poodles, I know many people are against painting over natural wood beams, trim and cabinets, but in the end, you may actually like it. It is something I personally like and is a nice, easy way to update the decor.
-
Love the vid!! Thanks, Jazzy.
-
Jazzy--great video!Thanks for sharing!
Poodles--I'm glad DH is getting some serious decluttering done! It must be scary to hear him say that, though.Hope the painted beams look better than you expect!

Today, a recycling company in our area is accepting hazardous waste at a location in the local mall parking lot. Dh and I are taking paint, driveway sealer, used car oil and a few more such things.
Two years ago, I began addressing the sprawl of paint cans in the basement. We'd painted so much over 25+ years living here, leaving far too many partially filled cans of paint. My solution was to buy several empty five gallon buckets, then I poured all beige-y type color paints in one, grey/green in another and white in the third one. I was able to toss dozens of empty paint cans this way. We used most of the mixed white paint in various projects, but the other buckets are almost full and we've no use for them. I am hoping the recycling company takes them even tho they arent in original paint cans; would love to be rid of them.
-
Good luck with the paint, MrsM!
-
There's a group here that mixes leftover paint and sells it very inexpensively. Help for low budget folks.
-
It was a go for the paint! So happy to have it gone. Very easy set up, just pull the car around to the workers and they unloaded it. No line either.
Wrenn, that is a great idea to recycle paint for those who can use it at lower cost.
-
OK, gang, I need a kick in the pants. Been slacking off the decluttering and cleaning, need to get back into the process, especially now that I have the dumpster. Project for today, clean off the kitchen table. Medium sized project, but necessary. Need the table space for cooking!
