Gardening, anyone?

I am more than a week behind in reading posts. I will try to catch up but I'm delighted to see so much activity. Here are a few of my bloomers from our spring planting and my some of my largest hydrangeas. We lost one rhododendron but just got our money back for it because Lowe's has no more and it's getting too hot to put in new plants.

Your top picture with all the blues is so peaceful and serene. I want to pull up a chair and sit there with a book.
We got very lucky in the rain department yesterday. We had almost 4 inches of rain which is our average June total here. Lots of streets flooded in town but I was excited not to have to water the garden this weekend. Now I hope that wasn't the last drop for us to see this month.
-
Scottie, I'm there with Heidi, pulling up a chair to enjoy the serenity of your garden.
I'm envious of the rain others have gotten. They keep calling for rain here but nothing yet.
I'm not sure what this raccoon was doing but he's sitting in my empty planter box. An hour later and he's still there! I'll have to put kitty kibble in there tomorrow night. I've been trying to download a picture of him but it's just not happening tonight :-(
-
Scottiemom - Love your pics. Top picture . . . is that an oak leaf hydrangea directly above your hearon? I love the flower pattern. Not to mention I love your hearon also.
-
Scottiemom1 - Love the pics. I so love hydrangeas. Have you ever tried to dry the blooms? A friend and I did one year. It worked out really nice. Basically cut a bloom and stick in water. And place in the house. The water allows for a slow dehydration. Sometimes they retain their color, but even if they don't they are pretty.
Is that a oak leaf hydrangea right above your hearon? Love the flower pattern on it. And while I'm at it I love the hearon also!!

He was just sitting in my planter for several hours. It was so cute!

You can't see me

Gardennerd, LOL! Silly boy!
Here's a few recent pictures of my straw bale garden. Everything is growing great!
Romano Beans
Kale
Red Rmaine
Sweet Peas
Dwarf Cow Okra
Cucumbers
Zucchini
Strawberries loaded!
Roots on my radishes are amazing! They measured 11" long!
I'll update everyone in another week or so. I'd say my first SBG is a huge success!
-
Replaced two cucumber plants yesterday.
-
WenchLori, a lovely straw bale garden!
MOmmyof2, cutworms?
Husband rototilled the vegetable garden and now time to plant the onion sets (scallions).
-
Teka, I wanted to do onions this year toobut I ran out of bales lol
-
Lori - Your garden IS a success! Love the pics. I'm intrigued with the little seat on wheels . . . or rather what looks like a tongue on it. Which is what has me wondering. Also loved that you took the time to paint your garden markers.
-
Gardennerd, that's my Sporty Jr. It is a seat on wheels and the tongue is the steering lever. It's Flintstone powered as someone mentioned before. It saves me a lot of stooping and bending and no kneeling needed. I love it and I use it every where I need to work.
I told hubby Sporty Sr gets caught up in just about any rut and it takes me a lot longer to mowe when it does. He just foo-fooed me and had to try it himself. So now I have monster tires on Sporty Sr! I was very surprised with my surprise!
Happy gardening to everyone!

Nope, stupid squirrels
-
Damn squirrels!
(
The onion sets (scallions) are in the ground.

Didn't have to water again. We got rain last night. Might see more bouts off and on all week!
-
Teka, yay fresh onions on their way!
M0mmy, they called for 70% chance of storms last night. Nope, dry as a bone this morning. Squirrels are such a nuisance but I love to watch their crazy antics. I scared one the other day when it was getting into my bird feeder and it almost fell off the deck railing. It was hilarious watching it catch its hold and run off. I've noticed the time of day when they are most active and put out feeders with corn in them at those times. The squirrels get corn and the birds get bird seeds. I haven't had any problems with them getting into my garden... yet!

Outstanding rose. Thanks for remembering the name.
We have a climbing rose called "the Impressionist" from Heirloom roses. They open deep yellow with some orange and turn pale yellow with rose edges to the petals when they mature. Fragrant when deep yellow. Very vigorous here.
-
Lori, the plants look fantastic! Who would have thought they would do that great. I would have worried that the bales would generate too much heat but that doesnt seem to be the case an those plants look very healthy...as does your racoon! LOL Those are quite the tires on Sporty Sr.
KB870, what a lovely color on that rose.
MOmmy I finally got some rain too...almost 4 inches on Friday. I wanted to weed the garden and finish putting straw over the remainder that was not yet covered, but the ground was way too wet yesterday.
Teka, I love fresh onions from the garden. I did not plant any this year. :-(
I almost have my shed cleaned up with things in their place. Amazing what having the space can do. I had found 3 bottles of this, 2 of that, 4 of the other. UGH. Now I need to use that stuff up.

Wench, I LOVE the raccoon photo!
-
kb870 Love the color of your roses. I couldn't find the Bill Reid in that color. Is it a bush or climber, ? Such an unusual color for me.
-
Lori. . .what a great bale garden. So many fresh veggies, and an adorable little kritter. KB beautiful rose. Gardennerd. . .my giant hydrangeas (last photo) behind our little pond area similar to Oak Leaf, at least their blooms are. I think the one you were asking about is the blue lace cap.
My newest roses, which are still in container pots and we're supposed to have deep purple blooms are now blooming bright pink. Rather disappointing but two of them are healthy so I need to get them in the ground. We lost one, I guess because we did not get it planted in the container soon enough. I also still have lilacs in container pots which I need to get planted.
As for rain, I'll send some north Lori. We're getting lots of it. Saves watering the newer plants but yuck.

KB870 - Thanks for info. I probably cannot grow due to our zone difference but I have a cousin that loves roses up north. Just found this one to be so unique in color.
ScottieMom - Yes, yes, yes Blue Lace Cap, that's it. Beautiful plant. Unique type of flower. Totally enjoying your pics!
-
Looks like we might not see the sun until the weekend
-
ScottieMom, great pictures. Love hydrangeas and each of yours is different. Seeing the blueberries and figs is making me hungry.
MOmmy, rain is a good thing for me, so I'll take yours! But I understand when you and the plants are wanting to see the sun. :-)
I live in an area prone to drought so I appreciate the rain. We were at a point a few years ago that water restrictions were so tight that no one was allowed to water anything outside and no pools were allowed to be filled. It was a bit scary watching the lakes that are used for the drinking supply dry up. Thank goodness we came out of that cycle.

Before breast cancer, I had HUGE gardens all over my yard and gardening was my passion. It broke my heart that for several summers I could barely garden. Then because of lymphedema, I had to cut those gardens to 1/3 of what I had. Last year I decided just because they were small didn't mean they couldn't be pretty. This Spring, I had the concrete edging put around my center garden so I no longer have to dig, mulch or edge! I am so pleased with it and wanted to share! Don't give up on gardening!!
-
Denise. . .you are absolutely right and lovely garden. Gardening is therapeutic, even small gardens. I also have LE and can no longer dig or lift anything heavy. I love your concrete edging. That is on our bucket list alone with a concrete patio garden in our backyard.

-
Denise, Brilliant idea and lovely garden. DH does most of our gardening and we must have at least 1 of every plant he thought was interesting. No order at all that I can see. I prefer neat and tidy, but he's doing the work.
-
At least I can say with the rain we are getting is that Mother Nature is taking care of the chore of watering my garden and flowers.
-
Did I mention that I HATE BEAVERS?
They took out half of my roses again last night.
