Hi -

About 3-4 months ago my left nipple hurt really bad and I squeezed down on my breast and a drop of pus came out of it, several hours later it filled up again and when squeezed again pus came out of it. I was on my PMSing, a few days away from menstrual cycle. Well yesterday  my period started yesterday and suddenly my left nipple hurt started to hurt again (same exact feeling as before), I squeezed on it and another drop of pus came out of it and again today. Now I read it could anything from an infection to cancer. I'm just wondering if it were cancer wouldn't it be ongoing and not just during my cycle and also will antibiotics clear this up?

Has anybody ever had this? It is listed a PMS symptom but I had no idea until I researched. I am going to go the dr. soon, but to ease my mind I just wanted to know if anybody else had any experience with pus discharge during menstrual cycle/PMS etc.

Not pregnant. Last pregnancy was in 2004.

36 year old mom.

Actual pus is a sign of infection, and I don't think an infection would fluctuate around PMS.  However, there are a number of benign conditions that could be related to nipple discharge.  Glad you are having a doc check it out, and I hope B/C is something that can be ruled out.

I don't know about the PMS.  But you could have an infection, if that is the case then an antibiotic should clear it up.  I would definitely get it checked out, the sooner the better just to be on the safe side. NJ

Are you sure it was pus? It sounds like it could be galactorrhea which can look very much like pus and would be much more common without overt signs/symptoms of a breast infection/abscess/mastitis.

I also recommend checking with your doc.

    best wishes!

That's the thing though, it's PUS (whiteish yellow in color) and both occurences have happened during PMS/menses. I do plan to get it checked out and I can't imagine even dealing with B/C, the thought terrifies me.

Only during menses time? Isn't that weird?

Wow!  After all this time, I finally feel like I am on an episode of House, M.D.  (Yes, I am joking, but not trying to make light of your situation.)  Can I just ask if it smells like pus?  You know, with that nasty bacterial smell.  Or does it have a sour milk smell?  Or no smell at all?

It may be a cyst.  Do you feel any kind of moveable lump where the painful spot is?  Even a small one?  Usually a B/C tumor is not painful.

When are you going to the doctor?  You have me curious now.  I hope for B9.  Let us know.

I believe that it is bloody nipple discharge that is worrisome for BC.

    Hi

There is no lump (it's like the fluid is right behind my nipple) and it does not smell at all as I have smelled it each time now and no smell whatsoever and it's only painful for a moment until I squeeze on my nipple and release the light yellowish-white fluid. My nipple will itch and then I know I have to squeeze my nipple to release the stuff.

It's just all my years of life I've never experienced this and so I am worried and my dr. appt is not until next week so i tend to freak out because I have anxiety. twice now with two cycles and I don't understand why.

Both of my breasts full up with pus right before I start my period. It's been 5yrs it's been doing this. I can't afford the specialist the hospital sent me to. My pus is green. Hospital told me breast cancer or brain tumor.

Let's go back to the start - if it's pus, it generally means infection. If it's infection, antibiotics usually work

Infection is different from breast cancer.

Carris - I do not believe any accredited hospital would have told you either "breast cancer or a brain tumor" and sent you home. That is so totally off the wall I can't even imagine it. If that was five years ago and nothing has changed, it's unlikely to be either, right? Where are you located? Where was this hospital? How old are you? Have you been actually even had any imaging to rule out breast cancer? Or any biopsies? If so, please put your diagnosis & treatment specs in "My Profile". But Brain Tumor? Pus in the breast being put down to a brain tumor? Nuh uh. Most unlikely.

A pituitary adenoma (brain tumor) can cause milk production and galactorrhea (milk discharge) because of the hormone it produces but it is not green, its white. Green discharge is usually associated with fibrocystic changes, cancer would be associated with a red discharge if any (blood). Infections in the breast are usually very painful particularly if associated with an abscess that may or may not cause a malodorous discharge. Also 5 years is a long time for this to be happening without other signs and symptoms if this were a cancer.

What specialist are they sending you to? Endocrinologist? Surgeon?

Hi, I know It’s been a few years since you’ve gone through this. The EXACT same thing has been going on with me for the last 3 months, about 4 days prior to menses. My appointment is set for January 8th, but was hoping you could give an update on what your doctor said? I’m 35, Mom of two and worried. Thank you.
