Starting Radiation in May 2017

Hi Peetie. Yes I am done. I think the redness appeared around the middle of the second week and that is also when it started getting itchy. I had fatigue the whole time and still do although I had a lot of other stressful things going on towards the beginning so it was hard to tell what the fatigue came from at first. Now that I am done it looks pretty red with some dark spots that I guess were freckles I didn't know I had. I shaved under my arm for the first time in a month and found a weird birthmark type of mark that definitely was not there before radiation so that was a little weird. It is still itchy and the skin is still sensitive especially around the nipple. But all in all it isn't too bad and I definitely am happy with my lumpectomy/radiation decision over the mastectomy. I don't think my breast is any smaller (from radiation) which is one thing I was worried about. Unless that takes time to show (I do still have fluid from surgery).
-
RoseRN1 - My skin was fine until about treatment #23 of 25 whole breast. Then, my nipple was really red and sore. I got prescribed flamazine and did saline soaks. Now, the nipple has healed but the skin is tarting to peel off of it! The skin under my arm and under my breast us super red and itchy. I have hydrocortisone cream for that. The 4 boosts were targeted to the tumor cavity between my nipple and collar bone so I suspect that area will start acting up soon too.
-
Thanks bravepoit. I'll have #13 tomorrow out of 25 then 5 boosts. My nipple and areola started to get red and swell last week but lanolin is really helping it

Congratulations on finishing rads!! Thank you for your response, it does help having an idea of what to expect. I am not red yet, but I do have nerve type pain like I did when healing from the lumpectomy (I was told that the ongoing pain that I experienced was because the tumor had invaded a main nerve, and the pain was occurring as the nerve was growing back). I hope this is not a symptom of something that I should be worried about. I will see my RO tomorrow, so I will ask her about it. Are you all done with treatment?
-
Good luck RoseRN1! I had 25 + 4 boosts. If things get worse, ask for the prescription creams!
-
Peetie, yes I am all done with treatment! I dont even know what follow ups I am supposed to have. The RO set one up for me in November to follow up after 6 months but I'm wondering if I am supposed to have a follow up with the surgeon or if I am done with the surgeon forever - no one really said. I suppose I will call and ask. No chemo and I'm er/pr negative so I don't need to see an MO.
Nerve pain is normal - I still have nerve pain and some numb spots from the SNB so it might take a while for all the nerves to heal. I can't wait for everything to feel normal again! (I hope it actually will). I will let everyone know when the itchiness and redness goes away - I definitely still have it today.
-
LAW193 - Congrats on finishing! I know how that feels.... I saw my surgeon at 3 months (December) and then again at 9 month (June 14th), You might want to check! I am also booked for a mammogram, one year from last one..
-
Law 193: I am sure it's different for everyone but I am supposed to see my breast surgeon halfway through my radiation treatment. See the MO a month after I finish radiation.
I'm starting today and am incredibly apprehensive about it.
-
Bravepoint and SJI: I guess I will have to call the surgeon and ask. I was going to wait until next week because I was planning on making this my first week since February that I didn't have to think about cancer. But of course I spent lots of time checking this site so I guess I am not doing that.
SJI, good luck today! The actual procedure won't hurt, and it will go by quickly!
-
I did start to break out in a rash. I saw my RO today and she said if otc steroids don't work, she'll prescribe something stronger.
I have to see my MO 2 weeks after I finish rads. Will start Arimidex at that time since I'm ER/PR +.Have to have a mammo in November which is when I had mine last year. I then see BS after the mammo is done.
-
So I am fair skinned, looks like after # 5 the skin is pinkish....is this too soon?
-
I have a slight rash now too. It's really not on the breast at all hardly but mostly just above it. It's also very slightly itchy. I really can hardly see the rash. Mine didn't start until treatment 21. Goincrzy8, my dr said if I was going to have anything, it prob. wouldn't be for 2 weeks. I think that side looks like it's a little more tan than the other but not pink.
-
Goincrzy8,
Day 3 for me and the inner and outer breast are pink.
-
Had my first radiation treatment today. Was really anxious about it. I have to hold my breath for part of the treatment. That ended up being easier than I expected.
Now that the first one is behind me I feel much more relaxed about the 19 more to go. I was surprised by how big the machine is.
-
SJI,
Good luck with your treatments! I just finished 5/20. So far so good!
Do you receive some of your radiation when you are not holding your breath? I am also using the breath hold, but I was of the impression that I was only receiving radiation when holding my breath, maybe I misunderstood...
-
Finished #5 of 20 today. I am having some discomfort on my incision, and a little bit underneath the breast where skin meets skin. I noticed that my nipple is inverted and the areola wrinkled. And the breast is warm to the touch. I was kind of surprised as I was told nothing would happen until at least #10 treatment if any would happen at all. I'm also extremely fatigued today. I had a morning appointment with my BS, (I'll see him in 6 months again, but I'm not sure why!), I did 3 loads of wash, went grocery shopping, and made dinner and it's like I have ZERO energy. It doesn't help that I haven't been sleeping more than 5-6 hours a a night again. I'm already taking letrozole and changed from an evening dose to a morning dose. It helps some with middle of the night waking, now I can go back to sleep, but once it gets light and toward morning, I'm done.
I have an appointment with my MO a month after radiation is finished.
Congratulations bravepoint and Law on your completion of radiation!
-
I just had #7 of 33 today, Nancy. My nipple is tender and the area around it seems darker. My breast is also very warm to the touch. And I'm really exhausted despite sleeping better than I have in a long time (I guess because I'm so exhausted!).
My appointments with the BS and MO are both in July, after I finish rads.
Hope you get some good sleep tonight!

MJ: I hope we BOTH get some energy back!
-
Hi Nancy,
I am also having 20 hypo-fractionated treatments. I just completed 5/20 yesterday also. I had to take today off because I was experiencing nausea and vertigo. My RO team told me that the vertigo is not a side effect of radiation, strange how it showed up with radiation...Nausea is however a side effect of radiation. As far as skin, I don't have any changes yet. It is interesting how we all react to radiation in a different way.
-
I didn't know nausea was a side effect. I had some after my treatment today but thought it was because I didn't have much to eat.
-
Hopefully that was all it was! I spent my day receiving IV fluids. I am hoping to complete another treatment tomorrow
-
Hang in there! I'm 3 days from my final boost and my nipple is feeling much better though the skin has peeled off..... My arm pit skin is tender and red but applying creams helps. I was told nausea wasn't a side effect of radiation as I'm the type of person who gets nauseous easily. Glad I didn't experience any.

Eight down - 25 more to go! Saw the RO again today (she sees her patients on Thursdays). She said everything looks good; we'll just continue with the same plan. I didn't think I was at all red but she noticed a slight redness. Cautioned me to use sunscreen as I'm so fair. She and the nurse weren't surprised about my elevated fatigue; the RO said 15-minute naps work really well!
Nice to have a short week - only one more treatment before I get a break. It isn't even the treatment - it's the 50-minute drive each way. I live at 5800 feet - have to drive down to 1000. The nurse speculated that the daily change in altitude might be contributing to my fatigue. The good news is my DH has been my chauffeur. He's going away for a week at the end of June; I'll either have to drive myself or line up volunteers. But somehow the thought of having to make conversation exhausts me even more. I'll wait and see how I'm feeling.
Enjoy your Friday and the weekend, everyone!

Peetie1- I asked the tech today. She said I'm only receiving radiation during the breath holds.
-
- Hey breasties, hope you are all doing well and either finished your rads or are not to far from the finish line. I just wanted to see how people were reacting to rads because I was so terrified that is would have a terrible reaction. I just finished my 18th (of 25)session and thankfully my skin seems to be holding up-- feel a warmer sensation in the area and some minor itching ( soothed by hydro cortisone) accompanied by some redness that seems to be localized to the thoracic region. I still have another week of this so I am expecting it to get worse but I am grateful that ( to this point) I am not debilitated by fatigue and burnt to a crisp..I go to fitness classes every morning and I am so proud of myself or not only keeping up but crushing the crippling thoughts that tell me I'm not strong anymore. I hope you all are feeling healthy and if not today, then tomorrow... Take care of yourselves!
-
Good for you, Jadanovic! My RO told me today that she has found that people who are active through their treatments do much better. So those fitness classes are serving you well. I'm impressed - I go three mornings a week. I'm going to add walks on the off days; I've begged my DH to walk with me but he's been very busy splitting and hauling firewood (at least I know I'll be warm this winter!). Guess I'll just have to go alone. Glad to hear you're faring so well. I hope I do, too!

I have finished 23 out of 31 treatments with the last 5 being boosts. I got the slight rash and slight itching after treatment #20 and it hasn't gotten any worse yet.
I'm wondering if swimming will affect it positively or negatively or not at all. We have a salt water pool and grandchildren coming next week and I'd like to get in with them. The dr. said it would be fine prior to me getting the rash but I didn't think to mention that it was a salt water pool. She's on vacation this week and I didn't think to ask the dr who was subbing for her. Any thoughts on this?

Hi Ladies, I just found this forum. I am starting radiation in June and only started thinking about it today. My RO, who I have met twice, said I have to stay the same weight for the whole treatment. I actually don't know how long the treatment will be yet. Since surgery (5 weeks ago) I have started changing my diet, low-fat, less sugar, no processed foods, no red meat, some chicken, nothing smoked, or BBQ'd. I'm am leaning to mostly vegetarian. The change is a process. I am also starting to exercise. I am only allowed to walk, but I'm going to get a treadmill and go to the gym 2 days a week to do some weight lifting (legs, stomach, belly, back only. And the more exercise is a process.
But my question is how can I stay the same weight as I change my diet and increase my exercise. I lost 30 lbs during chemo and I wasn't even exercising. A lot of that weight lost is because I didn't have an interest in food or couldn't smell anything. I haven't lost any since surgery, but I'm just now feeling less pain. I'm not willing to go back to a fattier diet and stop all exercise.
Does anyone have any tips on remaining the same weight while changing to a healthier diet and increasing exercise?
Thanks, now I'm going to read the whole forum, as soon as I do my cording arm exercises.
-
Thank you SJI! I asked the same question of my RO and got the same answer.
-
Hanging in there, I would keep to the healthier diet/exercise program. I am making the same kinds of changes, and I have been steadily losing weight throughout this whole process. I am weighed once a week when I meet with my RO, and she has not mentioned that I should stop losing weight.
