I visited my dr today cause I've back and chest pain she checked it all out didn't really say anything so assume it's all ok, I told her I couldn't face work etc I'm going on all inclusive holiday with DH and kids in 2 weeks not looking forward I. Feeling worse than I did at the start of all this she suggested an antidepressant which I didn't want anyway she said I needed it to lift my mood said to take for 3 months.

I collected it and it says on the box warning don't drink alcohol, don't get me wrong I don't be drinking every night although when I was first diagnoised I became very fond of the old brandy, I only drink on a Friday night few bottles but the alcohol will literally be on tap on holidays and I want to drink and enjoy myself and be in a good mood what would happen if I drink on these is it better to change get different one or just not take till I come back they are called fluzac and the prescription said norzac any advice maybe I'll call the dr in the morning

I think that's the generic for Prozac. I was on an SSRI for about a year. My doctor said it was ok to have "one drink". The SSRIs basically lower your tolerance to alcohol, so you will feel the effects of the alcohol more quickly. I would drink wine occasionally and be ok, but I would be cautious about really packing it in.

    What is the medication?

Did anyone mention that certain anti-depressants may decrease the effectiveness of Tamoxifen? I think Effexor does not. If you're going to ask about the alcohol you may also want to ask this question as well (if it wasn't already noted or discussed)

I hope that things improve for you!

Lorri, it does sound like you're depressed, which is just awful and gets in the way of your healing as well as your life in general. There are several reasons why there are warnings about mixing alcohol and antidepressants. One of the reasons is that alcohol is a depressant and can make someone's depression worse. There are also potentially dangerous side effects with specific medications. I would hate for you to not be able to enjoy your vacation due to depression. Please do call your doctor and talk about your options. Sending you healing light and ((hugs))

I called the pharmacist this afternoon and she was saying that the odd glass of wine is ok not to go mad then she said oh your taking Tamixofen and like you said knit pig they shouldn't be taken together so she said she'll speak to the dr and see what else I could take I'm seriously not wanting something thats gonna decrease the benefits of Tamixofen no way bad enough taking it every day and worrying about SE withouttaking it for no reason, I'm thinking I'm not that depressed I got through a lotta stuff in my 46 years without an antidepressant so I think I'll soldier on without taking it

Keep in mind there are some (like Effexor) that are ok to take with Tamoxifen, should you decide that trying an antidepressant is worth it for your quality of life. Also consider talking with someone. With the right therapist, counseling can really help, even without medication.

I agree with gb2115 about therapy. There was a study recently released that found a statistically significant improvement in the recurrence anxiety of breast cancer survivors. See a summary here: :
