New here - if you had BIRAD 5 was it malignant?
Hi all,
New here...scared. I'm 38 (39 next week.) Found a lump, doc wasn't worried but sent me for a mammogram just in case. No BC in my family at all. I cannot tell you how surprised I was when the radiologist told me she thought I had DCIS. Well...you all probably understand.
I finally got my radiology report and this is what it says:
"Diffuse pleomorphic calcifications are demostrated throughout the entire right breast, the CTB most numerous withint the upper outer quadrant of the right breast. And area of global asymmetry associalted with pleomorphic calcifications is demontrated within central superior right breast at posterior depth, subadjacent to the "palpable" marker. A small cluster of coarse pleomorphic and amorphus calcifications is noted in the left breast at 12 oclock."
There is more detail on the lump, which has since disappeared so I am leaving that out.
BIRADS Code: 5
Stereotactic Biopsy was Friday, I am expecting results on Wed. And so I'm here...waiting. I know BIRADS 5 means 95% chance of malignancy, and I suppose that if you are here you probably weren't part of the 5% that were benign, but just curious how many of you were BIRAD 5 and did it turn out to be malignant?

Sorry I was BIRADS 5 and malignant. Diagnosed at 41 years old. If it is DCIS, then you've caught it very early and have an excellent prognosis. I'm hoping for benign results for you!

My Radiologist told me personally that day that she was sure Inhad cancer. Unfortunately she was right. But not all Birad 5 are positive. Those people will not be on here to answer...because they didn't have cancer.
There is always that 5% and hoping that you are in that number. The anxiety waiting to find out is so hard. Ask your gp for a sleeper until then if you need to. We will be waiting with you

I had a birads 5 mammogram about 10 years ago that turned out to be benign after an open (surgical) biopsy. So, it does happen. Ten years later however (and multiple benign biopsies in between) I did finally develop DCIS, and so here I am. All of my other questionable mammos were 4's (including the DCIS). That first one, the 5, was scary ... but benign. Hope yours is, too.

Unfortunately, my BIRADs5 did turn out to be malignant. I really wasn't surprised. There's a ton of breast cancer in my family, the youngest being only 24 at diagnosis. Genetic testing revealed that i had a 45+% lifetime chance of breast cancer due to 2 gene mutations.
I sincerely hope this isn't breast cancer. You're so young. But, gird your loins. Breast cancer is tough, but you have a lot of support here. Stay busy while you're waiting for news.

Yes, Birads 5 and malignant. I think most of us on here will tell you that. I pretty much knew it would be malignant because the radiologist said to me "I'm worried about it" after my biopsy, which really threw me at the time.
Hugs to you---I am 38 as well, and will turn 39 in a couple weeks. I hope it's benign. Let us know if you need anything.

My BIRADS went from 0 (screening mammo) to 5 (MRI). And the mass turned out to be IDC. My testing went on for what seemed like forever (five months) so I wasn't surprised (I wasn't happy either!).
Hope you're in the percentage that's benign. Good luck to you!

Hi Rowan,
You're running into "sample bias" with your question here--so try not to draw any conclusions from the responses you get. Those who end up with a BC diagnosis from their biopsy tend to be those who stay to post on this forum (and read your question).
Sometimes those who get a B9 diagnosis come back and tell us that, but mostly they just stop posting--after all, they don't have BC, so don't want to participate in a BC forum. So you're not going to get many people who can tell you about having a B9 biopsy result after an imaging study rated BIRADs 5. They've all left this forum to do other things.
Hoping you'll do the same very, very soon!

On the flip side of this, I was a BIRAD 3 and 4a (given by competing radiology practices) and I had an aggressive tumor.

Hi Rowan. I'm so sorry that you're going through this scary and difficult time. I do hope that things will not turn out as you've expected. Please get a biopsy first, just to be sure. There have been cases of BIRADS 5 that showed benign results. I wish you all the best.
