Possible to save an infected implant with IV antibiotics?
Good Morning! I am looking for some hope here in my super uncomfortable hospital bed- a day ago, I developed red patches on my reconstructed breast. Long story short, they decided kit was cellulitis, admitted me, and are giving me IV antibiotics. My PS plans to do surgery today to wash out the implant pocket and then restitch me with a drain and keep me on the IV antibiotics. Until Monday. If this is doomed to failure, id. Rather just give up now. I don't think I've heard of anyone who has managed to save their recon. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

So sorry you're going through this, blueflowers! It's a tough diagnosis and it's hard to find too many success stories on this board.
I spent 13 days hospitalized last June fighting off my pseudomonas and cellulitis infection. I had two surgeries - one to clean the area and remove skin, the second to clean the area again after a recurrence, remove more infected skin, and replace the right side TE. The first time I was hospitalized for 5 days, the second time for 8 days, and was hooked up to IV antibiotics each time. Had to take 14-day doses of Cipro at home following the procedures.
I had to start over with my fills on the right side - I was back to flat. I also had my drains in for nearly 10 weeks. And my infected side was my non-cancer side....ugh. Pretty much everything sucked about the experience.
But....the infection has stayed away....so far. I was able to successfully finish my fills. I exchanged to implants at the end of October. I had a revision surgery last week. There has been no sign of a flare up, though the fear of losing my implants is always in the back of mind. I'm not sure you're ever really "in the clear" once you've been exposed to it.
Sending you best wishes!

tHank you so much for sharing. Wow, you have been through a lot. I am glad to hear you are doing ok now. If my symptoms don't resolve by Monday, I will lose the new implant. Gag. Right now they are just hoping to get a culture of something from surgery. My blood showed nothing. Sigh. Keeping fingers crossed.

Good luck to you littleblueflowers. I'm still experiencing leakage for almost 3 weeks. PS had me on 2 course of 2 strong abx because I started with red flaming breast area on radiated side. Now it's no more abx since I don't show signs of infection but if the leak doesn't come to a hault then it's coming out for me. I've had a day here and there of a clean gauze but then the yellow comes back. So draining, pun intended. Mon I go in for a check. We'll see if he gives it more time or if 3 weeks has been plenty for a tiny area to close on it's own..
And wow mytoystory2- Quite a story there, yikes. Glad you are doing better. So if your implant gets pulled and they say it's 6 mo before you can get it put back in, you start with TEs again with the slow fills?

Hi Artista, I have been following your story with interest, since initially I only had a couple of suture sinuses which were scabby. All of a sudden my breast turned bright red, and started oozing after I saw my PS and he sutured the initial little holes. I got scared, came in, and they admitted me right away and pit me on IV antibiotics. Yesterday I had surgery where he opened me up, washed out the cavity very agressivly, and put in a new implant. So far nothing g has cultured. If I'm not totally better by Monday, they are removing the implant, and in 6 months I will consider flap surgery. Sigh. I really don't want that. Sounds like your PS is treating you much more conservatively. I'm so glad its working out for you! I have drains in yet again, as well. Barf. Thanks ask much for sharing, and I really hope it works out for both of us!

I had cellulitis and was admitted to the hospital for iv antibiotics. It cured me temporarily. It came back months later and I was admitted again for iv antibiotics but my ps said thats it and removed the implant. I was devastated. I had 1 implant and 1 bare spot. I smoked cigarettes which he said was the culprit. I chose no more recons. 4 years later it does not phase me or anyone else. I hardly ever where a bra or a fake boob. Im comfortable with what i have ordont have. I just wish i never would have done the expander and implant thing. Lol. Healing prayers for all if you. I know what you are going thru

Hi Littleblueflowers- I had asked about using a skin glue since he says it's tiny but ps said it would need to come out to heal if it doesn't on it's own- you can't just plug the hole as that doesn't solve the fact that there is drainage going on. Like putting bandage over the problem. If he starts thinking removal I'll ask him since I don't appear to be infected if he could just give it another go by going in removing it, washing it out and putting implant back in. Thanks for sharing that. I pray for both of us. Truly sucks doesn't it. Let me know how it goes for you! ((hugs))

melmcbee- Happy that you are happy with your decision. For me I'm just not ready to throw in the towel so I chose to endure whatever comes my way in hopes that I'll be able to keep my implant. If it gets to it's just not going to happen for me which I don't intend on voluntarily stopping, then both come out. BC was traumatic enough so for me having a sense of normalcy in the look and feel is necessary for my mental well being. Just happy we all have options to choose from and all are just fine.

Clarifying - My infection was with my TE - pre-implants. Sorry for the confusion! Wishing everyone good outcomes!

Hi Ladies, well, tentative good news-they released me today on doxycycline and augmentin. ID Doc said nothing cultured, not even from the old implant, and I might as well go home. He said that if the IV was going to work, it would have worked by now, and otherwise, it would just mask the infection. Ultimately, my implant would still have to come out if it was indeed infected. Better sooner than later, and I agreed. My PS was happy with the way everything was looking. So, off I went! Wishing you all the best of outcomes!

Great news! You're out of the hospital! So you are out of the woods of losing the implant? Is the abx he's giving you just to make sure? I get a better pic of what I'm facing tomorrow.. I posted pics of the week's gauzes in my own infection/tiny hole thread if anyone is curious about what I'm seeing. It's not a lot but it has to be 0 and it isn't. So we'll see what my ps says tomorrow. I'll show him the pics in case tomorrow he sees zero. While I don't want the implant pulled, I don't want to lead him on that it's been a great week either.

Excellent news! I've been thinking of you all weekend (it's a long weekend here in Canada - back to,work tomorrow).
Gentle, healing hugs to you.

Hi Avmom! Great to hear from you. I hope your weather is turning spring like it is down here. I was just up in Libby, and thought of you and I do hope so much you are doing well!
Artists, I wouldn't go so far as to say I am out of the woods. I will say my breast and surgical incision look totally normal now, as does my drain output. I begin to wonder if what I suffered want an allergic reaction to dissolving suture??? We will probably never know. Onward with the heavy antibiotics, though. I need to read back thru your story, but I admire your fortitude. When do you plan to pull the trigger on weather to remove or not? Is it possible you have a low grade suture allergy? Just spitballing here. I really hope it resolves soon!

Thanks littleblueflowers. If I were in 70 or older I wouldn't even bother, I think. But I'm 52 and am not ready to be flat. Looking at those scars would make me feel ill and unattractive. Not a knock on those who choose to be flat but it's just not me. So I intend to fight until ps says you can't try anymore, it just isn't working and won't work. Even then I'd still fight. Hoping it won't go that far. I dread starting over with TE again but I'll do what it takes to make recon work for me. I'll be 2 years out of bmx 8/6 so I don't think it's suture allergy since it's been this long. PS just thinks the radiation did more damage to my skin v someone else with the same amount of rads. He put it like this. 2 people can go out in the sun. One gets burned and the other tanned, both under the same sun/same place and for the same amount of time. It's individual how our skin reacts and it seems my breast tissue is more sensitive than others and is having trouble healing on it's own. At least I'm not infected. Even though this is uncomfortable (the stitches) I feel better with them in as I was always concerned if my moving around was making the draining/hole worse. Of course now I worry about popping the stitches. When do you not worry, huh.Sheesh.
Hope it all holds well for you too!
