edited May 2017 in Waiting for Test Results

hi everyone. So stressed out and confused. Mammogram birad 5. Large dense 50% spiculate mass into soft tissue. Immediate ultra with same discription but...No evidence of internal blood flow and no calcification so wouldn't that rule out a malignancy? My appointment with surgeon isn't until June 7 and I can't stop consulting "Dr Google". Both report said probable malignancy and biopsy indicated but if no internal blood flow is evidenced in the ultrasound wouldn't I be in the clear? Anyone else have similar results?

No one can tell you if you would be in the clear, but your biopsy results should show whether or not it is breast cancer. No one is prepared for these findings, not ever. What can help is to find something to occupy your mind and time, such as sewing, knitting, cooking, beading, etc. Walking is great therapy and will help you to get in shape if you need surgery and also it will help you fight all types of cancers in the future.

When is your biopsy? Generally, it is done very quickly right after mammogram if area is suspicious. Hang in there and don't worry until you have something to worry about, even then navigating breast cancer is very doable. Mammograms catch everything so early now and that means more women are diagnosed each year. But you are not there yet, until you have a diagnosis try to carry on as usual (I know it is hard.)

They scheduled a consultation for June 7. Seems a far way out. But the last at the front desk at the doctor's office made the appt. Said that was the first available appt.

seemed odd to me to wait that long but he is one of the only surgeons in the area. Wondering if I should wait or make an appt with a surgeon further away.

If the radiologist who read your report thought it was suspicious, they would have done the biopsy. I would get some answers as to why you are waiting at all, if they think the area is suspicious. Are you in the states?

i live in the states but the hospital I had it done in is a 56 bed small rural hospital. I had my mammogram and ultrasound sound at 330 pm and they called my PCP immediately. He had me come to the office the next day to go over results and had the front desk clerk call the surgeon ( the one surgeon in our county lol) to set up a consultation so that he can decide the plan of action. My PCP said don't worry, it isn't cancer until they can prove it's cancer.

How far are you from a medical school or a larger urban area? Access to the best information and brightest doctors is important, at least for the diagnosis and surgery phase of treatment. You should have had some type of answer the day that you had your mammogram. Our centers no longer do call backs, they do all the diagnostics until they find an answer the same day. You know within 1.5 hours if you need a biopsy or get a year's clearance.

I go to a large university medical center that is an NCI Comprehensive Cancer Centerr and I don't have answers, other than that the results of my imaging were concerning, on the day of my mammogram. They did exactly what happens most places-she has been referred to a surgeon and her results were released to her referring doctor to discuss with her.

My stereotactic biopsy was a month after my diagnostic mammogram and my excisional biopsy was several weeks after that.

Melissa, we have most of those centers where I live as well, however our doctors move quickly. I would suggest mykidsmom, take her conversation to the Lumpectomy Lounge, where other voices can give her advice. Chi-Sandy, Poodles, Molly50, and others, have alot of experience in this situation and advising new persons. Very few people visit this section and she could benefit from what other's have been through. Mykidsmom, you can message me, if you like. Good luck.

I found my lump June 15th. Had U/S and mammo on July 5th, Bx on July 16th, Dx July 25th and surgery on Aug. 16th. So 2 months from finding lump to having it out which seemed pretty fast to me.

I hope you get benign results. It is stressful to wait.

My area of suspicion was found on Aug 1, biopsy aug 3, pathology aug 8th, surgery august 29. That is a typical timeline where I come from. My friend just went through the same thing and had same timeline. Both surgeries were for early stage, hormone positive breast cancer. We both had the benefit of an oncoplastic surgeon from USC
