Hi All,

Originally I wasn't considering recon but am concerned of back issues, etc. due to lopsided heaviness (and I've heard the prosthesis for that size can be fairly heavy) as I'm currently ~36DD. Has anyone had unilateral mastectomy with implant reconstruction (expander) and then also had a reduction in the remaining breast at the same time? Due to my breast size the surgical oncologist stated that most likely I would need a reduction on the remaining breast if I go with recon (am currently in the process of scheduling a meeting with a PS). Any advice/experiences you are willing to share? Any regrets or things you wished you had done differently? Any items you are happy about? Thanks!

I'm hoping someone replies to your question LoveK9s! I want to know too. I will have reconstruction in about 6 months (after 3 months of chemo and 3 months' recovery) and I would jolly well like to have the other breast reduced at the same time, rather than have to wait yet another 3 months.

I was told that they would not do the reduction at the same time.  They want to wait for the reconstructed side to settle in first so that they can better match the size when the address the other breast.  They may not all feel that way but that's what I was told by my surgeon.  I was little bummed out but as it turned out I ended up not having lumpectomy/mastectomy/reconstruction because they found metastases before I even was to start chemo.  I was Stage IV de novo and surgery was not standard of care.  That was a little more of a bummer.  I'm interested to hear from others.  I still have the option now to have a lumpectomy because the tumor bothers me and it would be nice to know if other surgeons would do the reduction at the same time.
