Feel like I've gone 0-100mph in 3 seconds
Hi All. I'm 45 years old and have had clear mammograms for years. Two years ago started the 3D mammos (paid the extra $ out of pocket for the 3D) since I have dense breasts. 3D mammo 5 months ago was clear then I recently saw an indention in my breast. Cut to the chase and per MRI I have a roughly 1 inch 'cube' IDC mass (2cm x 2.5cm x 3cm) that is supposedly slow growing. Has anyone experienced something like this where it seems to have gone from apparently nothing to "That can't be the size" in a short period of time and how do you deal with that? I feel like my brain still hasn't registered what is going on ...

I had a mass 1/2 that size that did not show up on 3D mammogram at all so I would say it's not that unusual. Have you had the genetic testing done yet to see if you carry breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer gene mutations? That can really help give you some answers and guidance.

Thanks Lula (I'm a fellow North Carolinian). I have a meeting scheduled with a genetic counselor next week to discuss genetic testing. Did you have the testing done? If so, how long did it take to get the results?

Just diagnosed and waiting on all the extra tests results regarding ER, PR, etc., but saw the North Carolina mentioned-- where about sin the state are you all from? I'm in a suburb of Charlotte. Would love to share more in person with others just starting down this path. Thanks

Yes! Just diagnosed this week with 11mm invasive ductal carcinoma. This was after mammograms and ultrasound in February, a surgical excisional biopsy of another area in the same breast in March (that one was benign) and surgical follow up and new pain and lumps I found in april.
My doc says and I believe it was lucky this one was found at all. My breasts are dense, regular pain/cysts/lumps, and the radiologist thought this also was benign.
I'm thankful the surgeon wanted to look at it herself and needle biopsy it to be sure. But yeah, no telling how long it was hiding there. I'm nervous as heck waiting on the MRI (one week wait)to tell us more and see what else might be lurking

Hi MamaFelice. I'm in the Raleigh/Durham area.

I know what you mean EpicSquirrel about the dense/painful/lumpy breasts ... almost nearly impossible to find lumps that could be an issue. Looks like you had a good doctor/surgeon to listen to your concerns. Results from my MRI indicated another potential area of concern in the same breast so had a MRI guided biopsy today ... but many MRIs only show the known area of concern so hopefully that will be the case for you. It will be difficult during the wait but when that anxiety hits you to try to remember to breathe in ... breathe out ...

loveK9s- it took about 3 weeks to get the genetic test results back. How are things going now
-
The MRI biopsy showed a significant area of DCIS. That in conjunction with the original IDC means mastectomy for me.
Don't think I'll get the genetic results for another couple of weeks.

So sorry LoveK9s! Multi-focal dcis was what translated into mx for me. ((hugs))
-
oh man! So sorry, loveK9s. Genetic testing results (when they eventually come) will also let you know if you're high risk for ovarian cancer. Let me know if you have any questions about natural tissue reconstruction with/after mastectomy. Thoughts and prayers for you
