Connie 1230: I will be supine. At least treatments will be in the right side, away from the heart. I asked if the esophagus is ever irritated, and yes, sometimes that happens with 35 treatments. The tattoos are so tiny and they didn't hurt at all.

I live in Florida, so it's all about beaches, pools and fun. I hope your grandchildren have fun visiting you.

Well, I told them today to do the tattoos tomorrow. But since then I've read that I shouldn't be in chlorine. Our pool is a salt water pool but I think that might be just as bad. So I'm going to ask them if I can wait one more day because I see the dr. tomorrow after radiation and I will ask her. I reread all the info they gave me to see if I'd forgotten something about swimming and all it said was no swimming until after being tattooed. I figure when we go to the beach I just won't get wet above my waist. Since the kids are young, they won't be in water that deep anyway.

Hi MexicoHeather. Thanks for the response. I have come to part of a decision and that is to have the underarm radiated. I do not want my chest radiated at all. My surgeon told me today that my margins were clean and I'm good there. He does think because of having cancer in 2 of my lymph nodes that I should have the underarm radiated. That was where I was considering agreeing to before I talked to him to find out what all was on the final pathology report after my surgery. I just want to make sure I'm doing what's best for me. That's all any of us can do. My RO needs to understand that. I just pray that I don't have other problems with radiation to have to deal with other than the obvious. I want to be comfortable with my decision and pray for the best.

Had my radiation planning today - it went very well. The techs were very nice and explained everything they were doing. Drew all over me, moved me around to get me into just the right position, positioned my head and chin. The tattoos are so small that they cover them with a sticker and mark an "X" on it so they can find them.My arms did get tired and, in fact, my right arm (the operated side) went numb. The tech had to help me move it at the end. It wasn't that bad (not as bad as the MRI); when I started feeling pain from having my arms over my head, I just pictured my little grandson, Felix, who's 1. He's the reason I'm doing everything possible to beat this.

They'll call me in a week or so to do the simulation; the tech took me into the treatment room so I could see the equipment. Looking forward to getting these treatments started so I can tick them off and get on the other side!

    Hello all,

I recognize a few names from other threads. I will be starting radiation at the end of this month. I went for the mapping last Friday. I will admit that I was definitely dreading it because of having to have my hands over head for however long after a double mastectomy. I am also dreading this radiation and so wished that I didn't need to do it. I can't believe that I was in tears after realizing I had to start (after the meeting with the RO). I think I was holding out hope that I wouldn't need it. I had a great response to chemo but the percentage advantage decrease was too great to ignore. So I grudgingly agreed to do it...30 treatments for me.

The mapping was surprisingly easy. I didn't even have to have the left arm, affected side, totally up. I did the mold, measurements and tattoos in about 45 min. The worst part was right before I went into the room I had to use the bathroom. So after I get in there the nurse was like..."Oh no, I have to give you a pregnancy test!" Lol...not, then spent the next 10 mins. trying...well you get the picture. I am in menopause but she said they had to be sure. Funniest thing was when another nurse comes in and proclaims, "Well, your not pregnant!" As if...lol 😂😁🤗

As far as creams and stuff, my RO had her nurse do a radiation training session with me and gave me a large booklet. Eucerine and Alaphor (forgive my spelling) were mostly recommended along with aloe. I think they said the most important thing was to put some type of lotion on right after the radiation session. I was advised to do the back side also.

So, starting soon and now kinda can't wait to get this part of the journey finished.

    Healing thoughts to all

Had my teeth cleaned this afternoon. When I told the hygienist I was starting radiation next week, she gave me a prescription for a special toothpaste for dry mouth. She said the radiation is apt to dry up my saliva and this would help. Also has extra fluoride, which the dentist agreed was a good thing. I had asked my RO's nurse if it was OK to have my teeth cleaned and she said it was. The hygienist said it was actually a good thing to have it done now.

Still waiting on the call from RO to start treatment. Ordered aquaphor from Amazon, bought Aloe Vera Gel hopefully those 2 items will help the skin. Will prob get a few cheap cotton t shirts for when I get home.

Camis are really comfortable if your're smaller breasted.

I wish Butterfly but I am large breasted and had a left side mastectomy, so I have the issue of either going lopsided to tx or use my genie bra with the knitted knocker to look even :(

I dont want to wear the bra's from the Boutique with my prosthesis if I am going to be having lotion or anything on breast after treatment. I guess I will figure it out once I start.

Some people have asked (or said) that radiation can make the operated breast smaller. Here's a thought: When the radiation tech showed me my CT scan, she showed me the area of edema that still is there (pretty big). I had wondered if I was still swollen from the surgery. I imagine that swelling will go downover the next two months, making that breast look smaller. So it will be the reduced edema, not the radiation, that will be the cause.

I noticed this morning that my right nipple is lower than the left - my surgery was at 6 o'clock so I guess the surgeon had to pull the skin down to close the incision.

Another topic: My brother told me that when his grandson had radiation 10 years ago (he was 6 and had a brain tumor), my niece and other parents were told their children's tastebuds would change - that they may want to eat just one food one week, another the next. Has anyone heard about this SE from our radiation? I'm wondering if it's because it was his brain being radiated that caused this SE.

When I started this thread, I was hopeful I would be starting my rads in May. Well, here I go! Just got the call from the RO's office to go for my simulation tomorrow. Then I'll start treatments on Monday. Looking forward to getting started so I can put this phase of the unasked-for adventure behind me!

Tappersmom - glad you're going to get started. Once you complete your first treatment it will become routine and less anxious for you. That's how it was for me. Gentle hugs.

My last rad is tomorrow! RO decided to reduce treatment to 15 and I had 14/15 today. I have redness, swelling, some pain from the inflammation and folleculitis. I also need naps, but it is all manageable. I hear side effects peak the week after rads so I am still bracing for more. Sothankful for all the advice here.

ILSunrise, Ruby3813, sq211, Lexicoe - Thank you so much for your suggestions. I bought the Calendula cream, as well as Radiation cream on Amazon. They are really helping with the pink itchy skin.

Glad to hear it, lohoff! Just keep doing what you're doing and you should be fine. :-)

Tappermom - Your brother's grandson probably had radiation of the head and neck, which most likely affected his taste buds. Personally, I didn't get zapped that far up, so I never had any issues. Head and neck radiation is a whole different animal. I hope his grandson is in remission!

Hi, Ladies! Had my simulation this afternoon. The radiation therapist invited my DH into the control room to see that and then into the treatment room so he could see the linear accelerator. He was able to stay until she got me positioned on the table. They took about seven films, then she took some digital photos. Wrote all over me again; put on some new stickers. My right arm froze in place again but I was able to get it down myself with my left hand. I'll start my treatments on Monday. First week's schedule is staggered as they fit me in; a set time for me should open up the following week as other people finish their treatments.

Glad to get this process started!

MJ, TapperMom: Yay. Glad to hear your ready to go. Going somewhere every day must be a scheduler's nightmare. When I said that I would do 8 am appointments, she was very happy. Have a good weekend.

Good to know Tapper, as I go on Monday for Sim. Mexico, I am hoping for early morning also so my day can started and I am not waiting all day for my Rads appointment. If I want to do lunch or whatever then my day would be free.

Ok, so something really weird started a couple of days ago. I noticed an unpleasant odor coming from my radiated skin. I spoke to the radiology tech and she said it happens to some people. It's really bothering me. Please tell me this has happened to someone else and it will go away after treatment ends. I can't stand my stinky self.

lohoff - this didn't happen to me but it did for some ladies. If you look through Starting rads in April or March., I can't remember which thread, they discuss some things they did to help with the odor. You are not alone. It may be coming from under the breast

    Hi all,

so I got the Mepitel. Do I need to have mepitel on for the simulation? My simulation for rads starts Monday. Then radiotherapy starts a weeks after that.

None in my cancer center is familiar with Mepitel. So I guess I'm going to have to put it on myself... any tips?

    Thanks e

    Hi Elastogelgirl,

I hope you got the right Mepitel--as it turns out, I had the wrong one the first week and completely freaked out when I realized it! Doc was great tho and she told me it would be okay and we just switched to the right one the second week.

Mepitel One and Mepitel are the wrong ones, it has to be the one exactly called Mepitel Film and says that on the outside of the package if you want to use it during radiation. (Why the company would have 3 very different products with such similar names baffles me!) I ended up finding the right stuff at CVS and CVS Online, in 4x4 and 3x2 squares.

If you're going to have it on during the radiation, the techs need to apply it while you're laying in the treatment position because it may move the markings and they'll need to rejigger them. Plus. The film edges must abut and not overlap. You should be able to do it at first treatment though, instead of simulation. (Otherwise, you're wearing it for a week or two before treatments actually start!)

I just took a copy of the study with me when I proposed using Mepitel to my RO, then when the techs called before the first treatment to ask how to apply it, I told them about the video on the Molynke website, which they watched.

If the center won't cooperate, you can still apply the Mepitel yourself after each treatment and remove it before the next one--the very first study was apparently done that way. One woman on here found that she could get the film to re-apply for about 3 days before it wouldn't adhere anymore. The downside is replacing the film squares every 3 days is a lot more expensive.

If I were to do it all over again though, I would seriously consider going this route. I just got so stressed about trying to keep the film on exactly as applied given the hot humid weather here and trying to continue my workouts! And every time I came in for treatment, they'd have to replace a piece under my arm plus trim and fill in little gaps from curling at the edges or whatnot.

Unfortunately, It turns out that I am allergic to Mepitel Film (I got a bad rash) and we had to remove it before the end of the second week. So I wish you better luck with it!

Tapper, glad you're getting ready to start!

11 done of 22! First full week my dad ended up going to ER and I had to drive my mom home in the middle of the night. (He's ok, although they still haven't figured out why his blood pressure kept spiking to over 200.)

Second week, I had to take my dog to the emergency vet and another mostly sleepless night. (He's recovering fine now).

Hopefully, this week will be emergency free, with just the stress of the radiation treatments and work

My energy is better some days than others, but I've noticed the last few days that my appetite is slipping.

Hi, May ladies! One treatment down, 32 to go. I got to the center 15 minutes early and they were ready for me. Took about a half hour. They take "films" three times a week, including today, so it took a few minutes longer. I couldn't really tell when the treatment was happening. I assume it's when the alarm sounds and the red light flashes. The RO came in to check something. The tech taped some sort of measuring device to me to measure the dosage. I took my aloe vera gel with me and put some on in the dressing room. In and out in a flash. As always, the only problem is holding my arms over my head - in time, I suppose, the stiffness will lessen.

Best of luck to all of you.

Tappermom, I had #8 out of 30 today. The shoulder pain is getting better for me, although I've been putting ice on my shoulders afterwards. They just do xrays once a week on me. My nipple and areola are starting to swell a little and get pink. I see the RO tomorrow. I'm sure they will say to keep moisturizing since it isn't that bad yet.

Hi everyone. Treatment #1 went smoothly and I was finished in 20 minutes.

The machine I was in was loud, and there was this Doppler like swish that reminded me of a carwash.

SO if you spent 20 minutes praying...while going through a car wash on your back, topless, THAT'S what it's like. Hahaha!
