Bree2,
Waiting is the worst but we got to hope for the best. I just got my paths back today from lumpectomy last Tuesday. Still a bit sore and my boob feels beat up, but feel so relieved that I got clear margins and confirmed initial biopsy. Now the treatment plan, getting healthy and making sure it doesn't come back.
Keep me posted on your results. Definitely strength in numbers. I am sending positive vibes your way.
Hugs,
Bebe

Hey jrow7,
How are you doing? Have you had your surgery yet? Please update, I am hoping all is going well

Hi ladies! Do you mind if I jump into this discussion?
I turned 41 in January. Had my routine mammo on 1/24, was called back for a diagnostic which I had on 2/1, stereotactic core biopsy on 2/21, and diagnosed with extensive DCIS on 2/23. I had genetic testing on 3/1 (still awaiting results) and met with the BS on 3/3. I have an MRI scheduled for 3/14 and follow up/pre-op with the BS on 3/17. Phew...so many doctor appointments!
Emotionally, I'm handling this fairly well, I think. My preliminary treatment plan was lumpectomy followed by aggressive radiation (5 days for 6-7 weeks) but in talking with the BS last week, she wants the results from both the MRI and genetic testing before advising between a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Due to my breast size and depending on exactly how "extensive" my DCIS is, those things will help factor into the decision. If we decide a mastectomy is the best route to go, I'm seriously considering a double mastectomy. I also feel that I would want immediate reconstruction and want saline implants but I have so many questions about that. I haven't met with a PS yet but she did want me to consider consulting with one. At times, I feel like I've got a firm handle on everything, then I think of or read something else and begin to feel overwhelmed again.
My thoughts and prayers for all of us! We can do this ladies!

HI buffyjc,
I am in my mid 40's and it sounds like you are a month behind me, I had my mammo on 12/28 and the process followed. I had all the same tests done, met with all the docs as well. One word of advice I can give is to get all the info from all the meetings and test results and make your decision then. Don't rush and don't drive yourself nuts. I was so overwhelmed at first, I even started a thread here, feel free to check it out as the feedback helped me and kept me calm. And after all the meetings, tests results the decision became very clear to me on how to proceed. I decided to go with a lumpectomy first to see if DCIS is all I am dealing with and since the size of it was small (5mm), it seemed like the right choice for me. I met with a PS to discuss a double MX as well just so I have the info. Good luck with all the appointments, keep me posted and keep breathing. Everything will be good again and life will be great again
xoxo

Hello ladies,
I have opted to forgo radiation treatment as my Onco Type DCIS test came back as 0 which means about 9% reccurrence in the same spot in the next 10 years. Anyone decided against radiation with the DCIS diagnosis?

hi GAMomma! I'm 42 and just diagnosed with DCIS grade 3, ER+. What led you down the path to double mastectomy? I have my surgical consult tomorrow, but I'm still trying to understand the aggressive surgeries when for something that is alledgefly highly curable. I know each situation is different. Did you have genetic testing?
-
Renee, I understand your confusion as I was there less than a year ago. One consideration is how large the area of DCIS is; for me at a 34B I was losing most of my breast tissue. I had a UMX and rads. There was 1 cm of IDC so it was good to have those all those cells removed. I am BRCa neg even tho my mom had BC as well. So I kept the right boob! If you add your Dx to your signature it would help to get a better picture of your situation. Good luck as you navigate through this.

I was diagnosed last fall at the age of 44 with 2 kids ages 11 and 13. I found my large lump myself and I am still baffled by how I missed it before. I had a clear mammo and ultrasound at 40, but lived out of the country and didn't get routine screening until I returned.
-
dj mammo.....my 2015 mammogram was normal. My 2016 mammogram started a chain of events that eventually revealed invasive mammary carcinoma, dcis, and lcis on one side and multiple sites of lcis on the other side. I had no risk factors, no palpable lumps, and no family history. I'm 47. Im so glad my OBGYN still recommends mammograms every year from 40 on. He may be old fashioned but he saved my life.
-
In response to djmammo's question I was just diagnosed with an 11mm IDC "probably stage 1" (waiting further testing) and it was only found by me noticing a lump (which was actually a cyst right next to it) and asking the ultrasounds tech to check it out while she was looking at a nearby benign area. Mammos in February, ultrasounds in Feb and March and even a surgical excision in March. Follow up ultrasounds and exams in April -- none of that picked it up. I just turned 49.
-
Thought I would introduce myself as well. I was diagnosed in March at 41 years old. I had a mammogram six months prior to my diagnosis that was normal. I happened to glance in the mirror while getting ready one morning and noticed some dimpling under my left nipple. I could only see it when I lifted my arm. Felt the area and sure enough there was a lump. Went to see my GP two days later and he ordered a diagnostic mammogram and US. Nothing on the mammorgram, but could be seen in the US. Had a core needle biopsy and here I am. MRI before surgery showed two masses in the same breast (one under the original mass right by my chest wall). Pathology report after mastectomy showed multi focal IDC and multiple areas of DCIS. That glance in the mirror was my saving grace. I tell everyone now that when they do self exams to look in the mirror as well and give them a link to breast self exams from this site.

3rd day on Tamoxifen - thoughts so far, definitely feel it, after taking it late evening, feel foggy, extremely tired and super sleepy. I try to fight through it and move around to get ready for bed. But the fatigue hits me super ghard. Besides that, feel ok in the morning and ready to go. Walked over 2 miles each day. to be continued...

46 year old dx 3/23/17. BRCA - Right lumpectomy 5/4. 1 Neg node; 1 micrometasis. Her2 neg. er/pr +. Stage 1. Grade 3.
Waiting Onkatype dx results. Praying for LOW number. Hopefully just rads and NO chemo but will go with dr recommendations.
Anyone else with similar experience, and did not need chemo??
-
Glad you are doing well. Did you have ONkatype dx test
-
42 years old. Diagnosed yesterday. I'm meeting with the surgical oncologist on Tuesday to find out the next step. They said all of the tests from the biopsy aren't in yet but hopefully they will be ready by Tuesday's appointment. I'm wavering between denial and disaster.
-
Hi Doreen9,
I did have Onco type DCIS test which is a little bit different. Based on the results, it came back at 0, I decided not to do radiation. Now starting 2nd week on Tamoxifen. Good luck with your test results, let me know how it goes.

Hi and sorry to hear about your dx. Hang in there.
I went through a complete shock too, denial, thought even of a conspiracy theory for a few moments. It all goes in stages and just know that waiting is the worst part. BUT it gets better and you will go through this and you will be fine. You do have to focus on yourself but work will keep your mind off things as everything happens in stages. Especially in the beginning.
I haven't told many people at all, I am very private. Just my close family. So whatever makes you feel better.
I wish you the best of luck, I am here if you need to talk
Xoxo

44 and diagnosed last week, after feeling something that turned out to be a lipoma... surrounded by cancer. Nothing showed up on the mammogram (tomosynthesis) or ultrasound, other than the lipoma. Something made me walk over to make an appointment with the breast surgeon, and here I am.
Waiting for surgery date for a bilateral mastectomy... I know it's ILC,Grade 2, maybe 5cm (8 cm with a "tail") and ER/PR+, her2- ... and meeting with the plastic surgeon tomorrow.
-
Diagnosed at 46. Like Kath1228, went for mammo every year for 9 years prior, sometimes for ultrasound. Both have missed cancer, even though it was not that small, 2 cm. The cancer was discovered on a baseline MRI, which I had done after testing BRCA2-positive. Nobody, the doctors included, felt the lump.Had a bilateral mastectomy because of BRCA, with recon (which looks great, but still feels uncomfortable),now on tamoxifen for the last year.

I too will join the conversation. I was diagnosed Feb. 15, 2017 with IDC. I am 40. Last Fall I felt something odd in my left breast, but thought it was an inflamed lymph node or something else. It wouldn't go away and my husband nagged me to see my gyn. I finally made an appointment for late January. I'd visited the gyn for my annual in June prior and there was nothing there and he didn't order a mammo for whatever reasons... I'm not sure. During my appointment he too felt the lump and ordered a diagnostic mammo and ultrasound. He thought it was just a fluid filled cyst since I have a tendency to grow those, but in my uterus. I had a complete hysterectomy at 35.
We saw the large lump on the mammo and the US, but during the US the tech wanded a different area and a smaller black spot showed up. My reaction was, "what the h*ll is that?!" Her response was priceless and textbook. "Well, next steps are that the radiologist will look at it and come give you information." She knew exactly what it was and so did I. The radiologist came back to tell me that she wanted an US guided needle biopsy because she suspected cancer. That happened 2 days later. That radiologist thought the same thing. The biopsy came back at IDC, Grade 3.
There were 2 tumors and they couldn't find anything in the lymph nodes on the scans. I opted for a BMX since I am only doing this cancer thing once. The final pathology came back IDC grade 3 in the left with additional DCIS. The 2 tumors ended up being 1 big one measuring 5cm. The sentinel node biopsy showed a .7mm micromet on one node. My Oncotype dx came back at 27 and genetic testing was totally negative. I start chemo (AC+T) on Friday and it will be followed by 6-7 weeks of rads this fall. Finally AI for 5 years. I'm considered post menopausal because of the hysterectomy.
My second round of AC will be the day after my 41st birthday. I am being as aggressive as possible with this considering nothing could be felt in June and 6 months later there was a 5cm tumor

I had a mammo just before my 40th birthday after finding out my mom had cancer in her 60's. My mammo was clear and mom's genetic testing came back clear as well. 18 months later (at 41) I felt a huge lump (the size of an egg) suddenly, literally overnight. Saw my GP the next day, had mammo, ultrasound, biopsy and the diagnosis within a week 1/2. Went to MD Anderson and body scans reveled a single bone met to the hip, so here I am, stage IV. Started chemo in January, last one next Monday, followed by lumpectomy, then rads. I felt great before diagnosis and still feel pretty good, despite chemo, I don't feel terminal a all. It's rough but doable.

Hi there... I am 46 years old and was diagnosed with IDC 3.8 cm, grade 2, TPN, BRCA +, so far no node involvement . I finished 4 x dose dense A/C and after a 3 week chemo break to allow my counts to recover I just had my first of 12 weekly Taxol. Unfortunately, I didn't know breast cancer ran in to family. My cousin and aunt on my dads side both had bc and both were BRCA+. They didn't share this information with the family. Had I known, I would would have been screened more carefully and perhaps would have caught it sooner. So, here I am. Bald and chubby from the steroids and change in my daily activity. I'm usually very fit and super healthy so I extremely distraught about the changes in my body. After chemo I will have mastectomy, reconstruction and hysterectomy in one surgery. This means even more changes to my once healthy and strong body. I guessing my focus should beating this so I can live a long and healthy life. So I eat healthy foods and walk any every day I feel good. So far, I have tolerated treatment fairly well. I just can't wait to get this behind me so I can get back to my life and the things I love to do. Plus... I will never complain about a bad hair day again when I have my hair again. On a positive note my daughter is BRCA-!

Hello all,
I found a lump in my left breast in April, lump confirmed by my Dr., who sent me in for a mammo, it was confirmed. 7 cm dcis. I cried tears of joy when they told me it was dcis and not invasive, and my biopsy only showed dcis.
I met with my surgeon with a plan for a lumpectomy, and a few days later, the oncology radiologist looked at it and thinks there is idc. Plans changed to mastectomy due to that and the size. But now I don't have a firm surgery date.
Talking to the plastic surgeon abt reconstruction was scary, and now I'm referred to a different plastic surgeon bc diep flap is the best option for me. Apparently, if you have a dd cup, you need reduction on the other side because they can't go that big if you use implants. Surprise to me, but I don't want the other one touched, so going with diep flap.
I had my MRI today, bracing for bad news, because it all seems to be going from bad to worse. I have a wierd feeling it has moved beyond the breast. Hopefully, I'm wrong.
thanks for being here

I just want to welcome all the ladies in their 40s. Seems like there are more and more of us every day. I am two years out now, and other than some weight gain i cant shake off, amd feet that hurt when i first get out of bed in the morning, life has pretty much returned to normal "though a slightly different normal" than I had planned.
Hugs to all of you as you go on this journey.

hello, i am 45, i found my lump in october. six months before, a routine mammogram had been clear, but i have since learned they are not reliable in my case (the tumor didn't even turn up on the mammo when it was 25 mm). i had to push for a biopsy as the radiologist who did my ultrasound in a terrible brooklyn hospital was convinced it was a fibroadenoma. it turned out to be IDC. there is zero history of breast cancer in my family so it was pretty shocking.
i just finished my chemo. 4 EC and 12 taxol (+ herceptin / perjeta) -- the last one was this morning, i'm so happy it's over
i am not anxious. i miss my hair.
