Called back for new questionably increased area of denseness

I had a screening mammogram last week and was called yesterday for 'questionably increased right upper parenchymal density'. This new area of denseness wasn't seen on my previous 5 mammograms. I have heterogeneously dense breasts. I also have implants that are under the muscle. That is all the report said. How common is this? I have already had cancer once, melanoma. I am 42 years old. Im trying because not to worry, they can't get me in for the diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound until May 24th, waiting is difficult.

So "questionably increased" sounds as if they aren't certain. Dense breasts are notoriously more difficult to "see", which is why they're recommending a diagnostic (more images) and us. It is very possible that they are just being reasonably cautious. Try not to let your worry take charge. Something like 10% of women are called back to get more imaging (2 types of imaging are better than 1 when there's a question).

Of those 10%, 75% are then told to come back for routine or 6 months follow up. Your chances are very good that it's B9. Hope you get your answers soon after your diagnostics, waiting is awful.

I'm in the same boat. I went in for a diagnostic mammo and ultrasound because of a lump. Neither found the lump I can feel but they did find some asymmetrical density that they want more images of. I'm waiting for my appt on the 15th for a mammogram with contrast (apparently a fairly new alternative to breast MRI). This 2 weeks of waiting has been nerve-wracking! I'm waiting right along with you. Hugs

Update:  I went in for the diagnostic mammogram and was sent back to the waiting area so radiologist could read it.  I was then called into the tech's office and she said that he saw an area of concern that needed a closer look.  So I waited 30 more minutes and had an ultrasound.  Ultrasound showed NORMAL breast tissue!  I have to come back in 1 year.  Thx for the support.  It's funny how we worry for weeks leading up to the apt and then forget about it immediately as soon as we get good results. I wanted to post this for others who may come here concerned about a callback or about a change shown on mammogram when compared to past mammograms.

Yay napaoctober! that is great news! Thanks so much for coming back and letting us know. It is really encouraging for others with similar findings to hear from the women who get the B9 results. Have a lovely Memorial Day weekend!
