Radiation

Options

Hi Ladies,

I will be starting radiation June 1st. I'm currently on tamoxifen as well. Can you take this and radiation? I'm taking D3 and Magnesium daily. I'm also on a strict plant based diet. I actually feel really good. I've had a few hot flashes, but the magnesium is helping them. Do you all have any suggestions on what I should not take or eat during radiation? Any suggestions on how to get through it without many side effects? Thank you.

Some docs are OK with tamoxifen during radiation. Check with your medical team, because they will know what they want you to do. Also follow your radiation oncologist's advice for whether or not to continue supplements.

I haven't taken Tamox, but started Femara a week after starting rads 7+ yrs ago. No problems. I also took Super B Vits, Vit D and K (potassium) throughout. Am not a Vegan or Vegetarian so ate a balanced diet then.

Be sure to clear any 'suppliments' you take with your Drs.

Stay away from antioxidant supplements (naturally antioxidant foods are okay in reasonable amounts). You want cell damage during radiation (and chemo)—it’s the whole point. Antioxidants prevent this. Make sure you hydrate adequately and avoid infections, as your immune system is somewhat weakened (though not as much as during chemo). Clear any other supplements, including oils & herbals, with your RO and MO before starting rads.
