A friend of mine died at the age of 42 from gastric cancer and this started me off on checking on my health. First ever mammogram at the age of 48 - ILC diagnosed. Only 1 micromet at initial surgery but did not get clean margins so had to go back for mastectomy. No chemo or radio needed or recommended (hurray) but started on tamoxifen. Had second breast off 6 months later as HATED the prosthesis. Decided against recon or wearing prostheses and have now been completely flat for more than 3 years. Had a hysterectomy to bring on menopause but have not changed to an AI as I do not like their side effect profile. Instead - have taken myself in hand - lost 8kg, taken up running and cycling and hoping for a long and healthy life. 6 and a half more years of tamoxifen to go and by then I expect there to be more treatment options available from ongoing research.
Exercise is so much easier without breasts!!!!

@Yhendrix, I am no fan of Trump, in fact I am about as anti-Trump as one can get. But I really should shake his hand or buy him him a Daniel Webster cigar! (That's a line from True Grit, one of my favorite movies!) I wonder how many other people had similar experiences.

siciliana I was worried about losing my health insurance after the election and made an appointment for a mammogram. (I didn't realize it had been 7 years since my last one.) Had it in January. Told I needed follow-up scanning due to calcifications and architectural distortion. Diagnosed with ILC Feb. 3 after 3D mammogram, ultrasound, biopsy and MRI. Was multi focal and only one of the areas showed up in the US and that was even hard for the tech to find.
I noticed you are in Anacortes — I'm in Friday Harbor. Did you go to Mt Baker imaging? The staff there are great.

SJI, wow, that makes three of us on this thread who scheduled our appointments because of the election results! I went to Overlake in Bellevue. Because I had to change insurance soon after being diagnosed (Premera no longer serves Skagit County) I had trouble finding someone contracted with my new insurance. Unfortunately, none of the Bellingham providers were eligible. I had heard good things about them, too.
Nice to hear from a local!
