Mepitel Questions
For ladies who have used Mepitel and Mediplex during radiation--how did you know which sizes and how much to buy?
My RO is willing to do it if I get it ahead of time.

Hi lexicoe
I'm checking this out my breastcare RO and hopefully will have an answer soon,
-
I'm looking forward to hearing what she says--thanks

The Mepitel needs to cover the area that is receiving radiation. For me it was chest wall and supraclavicular nodes - so a 20/20 cm front - maybe a bit more a little strip for your axillae and two pieces for neck and back (exit).
They come in three sizes but certainly can be cut to shape so the bigger pieces are a little better cost wise - although they can twist and once that happens they sticks together and the piece is lost - peel the back slowly - preferably have a nurse help.
You will need spares as the edges roll off and will need a bit of clever decoupage and replacement.
And you have it for the time of the rads and the company recommends 3 weeks after ( I lasted 10 days). You can not get it wet, no swimming and odd showers.
For me it was great - I still got a skin "reaction" nice word really for skin deficit after rad 20 peaking at one week after the rads finished (25 total) - with the Mepitel I could wear clothes without discomfort, no blisters or ulcers, but everyone is different...
The general principle (as you know 😊) is that it decreases skin breakdown from friction and allows that top layer of skin to protect the bare skin deficit below. I think it worked
All the best 😊

Thanks, Wild! I don't think she plans on doing my nodes, but I hadn't thought about the back!
The fastest sizes to get on Amazon seem to be pretty small 2x 3 inch and 4 x3, but it sounds like I need to order the 7" long ones, which wouldn't be here before simulation but should before I start.
If she's not doing my nodes, maybe I won't need the Mediplex for under the arm? Or maybe I'll need it anyway since that area is so close by?
I wish they had given me a little more guidance on what to get, but I'm just glad they are willing to do it--I'm a fair-skinned redhead,so I've been pretty worried about the side effects.

do you know why they would not do nodes???
You get your measurements done first then have a simulation (Australia)
My simulation aka stage 0 was a shambles the machine had some issues timing breathing ...but really I think it was just so one can get used to being on the table and for them to see if you can breathold. You don't need the Mepitel for that. I would not even stress too much if it was session or two late - it's purpose is to keep the nonviable skin on, and decrease friction - you should not get much of that initially .
Skin color/fairness does not seem to correlate with skin reaction but I know what you mean I am fair skinned too

Thanks! That's good to hear--that I won't need it for simulation and have time to get the higher strips.
Although they found a few isolated tumor cells in one node, it wasn't enough to technicallycount as positive and the protocol is to treat as if none were there. My oncologist said it could be that the cells were just accidentally dropped there during the biopsy. The first surgeon said it could be that the cancer was just start to move toward the nodes. So,there's no consensus on why these cells are there. But apparently, research shows there's no benefit to treating them.
I have to say that I'm not totally comfortable with her decision to exclude the nodes though, and I may do some research of my own on that this weekend.

I don't know enough about it - it was just a question.
I didn't have the axillae Rads because I had 13 nodes taken out by choice - specifically I asked for a level 2 clearance - nothing showed up on the diagnostic MRI BTW, so thrilled I did - one sentinel node macromet 3.5 mm.
I have no chording or lymphoedema but I am of small frame, generally heal well and keep active.
Still on my Rads there was a fair bit of discussion between two "experts" of risk benefit - one no and one yes - as you can see in the end I went with the full degustation.

Sorry for the delay, here's the response from the guru:
Sizes:
10 x 25cm
10 x 12cm
6 x 7 cm
I imagine a box of each would be fine.
If this person is having Post Axilla treated (and therefore has a treatment field on back of shoulder), then the 15 x 20cm is a good size to cover.
Wildplaces has good info in her post above.

Wow--that's a lot of Mepitel! Thanks for checking for me, Amusing!
The sizes that I'm seeing here on Amazon don't match up exactly (even after converting to inches LOL) to those, but they're close. They may market different sizes in different countries. But it sounds like I'll definitely need larger and smaller ones.
I have my simulation tomorrow, so I'm going to ask again about my lymph nodes and if I'll need Mediplex for underarm at all.
