Bachelor Thesis Coping with breast cancer (short survey)
Hi all!
I am a student at the University of Vienna and am currently conducting research for my bachelor thesis this semester. The topic is about how female breast cancer patients cope with their illness and how their coping behavior correlates to their age, medical variables (stage, time since diagnosis and treatment status over the past 30 days) and indicators of their socioeconomic status.
I would be very grateful if you answer my survey and help me gather data for my thesis! The survey won't take longer than 5 minutes to answer and it is fully anonymous (you won't be asked for a name or e-mail, only I and my supervising professor have access to the data).
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to send me an e-mail at the link you will find in the survey at the bottom of the page!
Here you can find the survey: soscisurvey.de/BAthesis_copingwithcancer/
(Apologies for the not working link unfortunately an error message prevents me from providing a "complete" link, however it still works if you just copy paste it into your browser search bar and it will auto-complete with h t t p s:// and w w w. in front of it, sorry for the inconvenience)
Thank you so much for your support!

Interesting approach. Are you a Psychology major?
-
Yes, currently in the 6th semester and hoping to be able to get into the master this winter.
Also, thank you for everyone who participated so far, I really do appreciate it! Unfortunately I still can not post links, the moderators told me it may have something to do with my account being relatively new, sorry for that.

Completed! Would you be willing to post the results when you're done with your thesis? I'd be interested to see the outcome
Best of luck with your Masters!

Finished the survey. I also would be interested in the results.

Done. The health insurance cost and income was a bit difficult to answer. While I have complete coverage with Medicare and supplement plan F, the monthly premiums is expensive with my income to carry.

Hi everyone!
First of all, sorry for the somewhat late reply. Yes, of course I can post the results, although how much can be interpreted from the data is questionable since the design had to be kept fairly simple because I had very little time to gather data and the survey had to be rather short in order to get as much responses as possible. While not quite as many as I would have hoped have filled out the survey it should still be enough participants to get okay results (86 participated so far, the goal was 100). Thank you again for everyone that helped me out, I really do appreciate it!
I will be closing the survey in about roughly 12 hours since I will be having to analyze the data until next tuesday. Posting the data will probably take some time still though, you can expect it to be posted somewhere around the end of June/begin of July since that is the deadline for handing in the paper.

Just completed the survey - hope it is helpful and gets you at least one additional reply closer to 100! Good luck and thank you!

Done. Good luck!

Just did this as well. You should know that I signed up for a LiveSTRONG event while in the midst of treatment. I raised money, and I had to train. The ride was 12 days after finishing radiation. Just the most miserable time, but because of the rain and wind. I downsized from 60-45 miles. But I finished! I did turn down the cold beer at the end because I was chilled to the bone.
I am wondering why they didn't come back Seattle?
More seriously, once I learned that I would most likely live, my focus was on getting through treatment as unscathed as possible. So lots of exercise, and I was able to eat mostly normally. My key client lost their major client and I was affected financially. They eventually went out of business.
My big learning is that we set the bar too low post treatment. Eight years later, I live a rich, full life. Just got hugged by Ulli of Ulli's Sausages. Not enough hours in the day to get it all done. I pay it forward with my work for a brain cancer charity.
BTW - since I do consulting in Market Research, I thought your survey dwelled on the negative and that I was expected to respond to an "agenda of victimhood and ill health". I never felt that way. I thought my body had been invaded and that I had to get beaten up to extirpate the intruder. Which I did. There was no way that I felt sorry for myself. My childhood friend was not so lucky with a rare kidney cancer. My cancer was treatable.
What was missing when I was treated was a model (or models, as I suspect segmentation, of "healthy recovery"). I still think that work needs to be done in that arena.
Good luck with your thesis. You might want to read the work of Dr. Howard Moskowitz (who I know personally from some of my work) around Mind Genomics. I couldn't find the exact reference I was looking for, but here is a synopsis of how they are applying this work. Because it really is about "groups of patients", not just one patient. The same as for spaghetti sauce. - Claire
Mind Genomics in Healthcare
This mind science is being applied in healthcare to improve the patient experience, increase patient compliance, and decrease healthcare costs. One approach can be found in a hospital setting, so clinical staff knows exactly what to say, what not to say, and to whom to motivate the right behaviors. The results of using Mind Genomics with one hospital resulted in higher job satisfaction, better patient engagement, and an 80% reduction in hospital readmission rates. Stay tuned for other stories on how Mind Genomics is being used to transform healthcare.
