I hope people will still post here, too. I am not comfortable joining a cancer group with my Facebook account.

Good afternoon, ladies! Thank you for the welcome. JLBinPDX, I found that the SE became accumulative and the last treatment I had of AC was the worst. I'm one of those who hate to take any meds, including tylenol and didn't even have any on hand. I only took the anti-nausea that they suggested the very first treatment afterward on the day afterward. For constipation, I took the dollar store tablets for on occasion. I did have lots of bloating, bubbling, and some acid reflux happen. Not fun. I ended up eating whatever sounded good at the time and for up to 3-5 days after treatment near the end it was difficult and I lost weight. Crackers, pretzels, Quinine soda seem to help. I also had popsicles and shebert on hand. My appetite was the best in the mornings so that is when I got down a protein shake with frozen banana and other fruit on hand. I put in ground flax seed, chia seeds, and a little of yogurt and almond milk and tablespoon of coconut oil. Anything that would give vitamins and some calories. I now have tastebud changes whereas before, I loved hot peppers and spicy picklings but they burn my mouth now. I don't know what to expect with the new chemo of Taxol an Carboplatin.
It was easier for me to just shave my head with a razor after two weeks. At this point, I am not liking even putting a scarf on when I go out but will soon probably just put on a cap, bald underneath, especially with warmer weather coming. I feel if people are going to stare, let them, haha. It would be obvious to me if I saw someone like that, that they are going through chemo and I'd have compassion for their position and maybe admiration for them. Be strong ladies!
I'm retired so I can't imagine what you ladies are going through that are working. I had to take lots of naps for the first 3 days and I still go to bed early. My blood count would be taken before chemo and it was very good then one week later the labs showed a drop which accounts for the low energy. But I'd recover and it's be back up again the following week for just before chemo. Doc said whatever I'm doing, keep up. I take a slew of vitamins with my shake in the mornings, too. I was having tumeric and ginger broth in the mornings (very good for you) but since chemo I cannot stand to drink it
Cinnamon is good, too, so sometimes I put some into my shake (blueberries are an immune booster to fight cancer, too) I've always been a healthy person and can't ever remember the last time I had a cold. We are vegetarian but eat fish and exercise daily. This has put a damper on my exercise, for sure. But when you feel well, do what you can. Try to not be too hard on yourself...that is a big one for me. This will pass and we can get well and healthy and move on with our lives!
P.S. Sorry for the long post, haha!! Much love to you all! Barb

Lindacim31, I'm having similar treatment minus the rads. I had surgery 3/2 and will have Herceptin and Taxol weekly for 12 weeks, then Herceptin every 3weeks for 9 months. I had radiation the first time I had cancer, though. I was supposed to start chemo 3/30, but I developed an infection. Tentative start date is now 4/27 depending on whether the infection is gone. At this rate I feel like I'll be pushed to the May chemo group.
-
Barb (BSchutt), you offer some good thoughts that I need this morning. I, too, am vegetarian (with very occasional fish), don't get colds or flu, have never had a flu shot, and work hard to do the natural route. I'm hesitant to take the anti-nausea med or even constipation meds as everything seems to have a side effect. I'm triple neg, having chemo prior to surgery, and I think my chemo med is Adriamycin but won't know more until Wed. I'm getting a port tomorrow (not very happy about it but I finally agreed). A couple questions:
- Will they give me anti-nausea meds right there at chemo? Is it something everyone takes? If anyone didn't, how was it? I can't remember the last time I threw up (maybe 15 yrs ago or so) so I think I have that on my side.
- Can't you help constipation with fruits and food? Are foods enough to avoid a med for that?
- Mouth sore remedies or preventions?
Appreciate everyone's comments. Feeling blessed to have found this group. -
I was eating plums and bananas for constipation, apple juice, trying to drink as much water as I can. I couldn't eat a full meal. I tried whole grain cheerios also and cream of wheat, almond milk. But I couldn't take it anymore after getting up very single hour last night in pain, thinking I had to move bowels and nothing happening. I took a stool softener, then the next day had to take immodium. I'm feeling a little better today.

Hello, finally jumping on to this forum. I'm a single mom of a teenager and planning on working as much as possible. I had a double mastectomy in March and have expanders in. I started chemo last Thursday (4/6) and it actually went better than I expected - stayed close to home Friday and Saturday, dozed and took the anti-nausea meds, went grocery shopping today but was exhausted after. Tomorrow I go back to work for the first time since the beginning of March. I doubt I'll last the whole day. The thing I dread most is nausea and vomiting!
-
Welcome JoyAl - We are on the same treatment pattern. You are 5 days ahead of me. I wish you well tomorrow. Glad you are here.
I have my first chemo tomorrow. Nervous for sure, but I can't imagine not being nervous. Everyone has given me hope after reading how everyone is doing.
Anne -
Anne, best of luck with your first treatment. Drink lots of water to get that stuff through and out of your body.
Keeping you and the rest of us in my prayers Together we will get through this

question for those who have received first round of chemo ---
Have you started monitoring your temperature?
I checked mine EARLY Saturday morning and found my temp was going up. The notes I have from my MO said to call them if temperature gets to 100.4. I watched mine climb to 99.8 over an hour's time so woke hubby up at 4 am thinking I might be making a trip to ER. Luckily, temp started going down and has remained at or near my normal if 97.7
Wondering what others are experiencing
-
Hi Joyal- I feel your pain, the thing I hate the most is not feeling good. I was very tired for a few days as well. I hope today goes well.
Dodgersgirl- I haven't monitored my temp, but only because I haven't felt hot. They never mentioned it to me either. In fact there is a lot you ladies are talking about that my doc didnt go over I am starting to consider a second opinion.
-
Happy Monday!
JLBinPDX, I was eating some fruit and a little bit of veggies(normally eat lots) but still needed the constipation meds occasionally, which I really dislike all meds. They do give anti-nausea meds during the infusion, I think 2 kinds before and 1 after. I didn't question whether I should have them or not. I would suggest that you do because even with those and very little of the prescription they gave (only on the first infusion) you will find that your appetite is not good. I didn't vomit or anything but just the taste and thought of food was not good. Cottage cheese and yogurt seem to do well, though. I didn't like the idea of a port, either, but it was explained that the Adriamycin especially and the Cytoxan (AC together) were very hard on your veins and they don't want to take a chance of it spilling into tissues. They even gowned up to administer it to protect themselves which was scary to think about going into my own system. The port procedure was relatively painless for me but they also did underarm axilliary lymph node testing at the same time so I had about 3-4in. incision there. Good luck with yours, I'm sure it will be fine!
Dodgersgirl, my temp rose like that as well but then went back down. I stopped taking daily temperatures after a few weeks because I got lazy though.
Welcome, Joy!, I did find that simple walking around a store was exhausting, too. Just listen to your body and try to not over do it. It becomes emotional for me when I get weak and I just want to sit and cry but take one day at time and it does get better.
Drink lots of water, everyone, and good luck with upcoming procedures!

Oh, I also wanted everyone to know that at the start of my third treatment the oncologist couldn't even feel my tumor anymore and it used to be 2.9cm and very palpable so that is good news to look forward to!
-
BSchutt - wow. Thanks for sharing! Definitely something to look forward to!
-
momojcbc - I received a booklet from my cancer center that explained the various treatment plans. It also had a short itemized list of when to call right away and when to call during office hours. With white blood count depleted we all run the risk of getting an infection and a temp increase to 100.4 could signal the need for intervention.
If you are interested, after work today I can type up those few pieces I was told to watch for
-
I bought "Sea-Bands" from Walgreens to try as an aid for that queasy stomach. They say on the box to help with chemo nausea and they work with acupuncture instead of pills.
I decided to try them out today as I am trying to work a full week this week.
Most pharmacies and Walmart- like stores seem to carry them. You have to wear one on each wrist. And they seem to cost around $14
-
Had first chemo five days ago. I am feeling okay. Never had a problem with nausea or vomiting. On Friday, I developed pain and weakness in my knees, legs, ankles. It feels like my legs are going to give way. It seems to be getting better every day and going away. So that pain was just one more thing that kept me from sleeping. The huge tumor in my armpit is excruciating but Tylenol helps the legs and the armpit. The tumor is already smaller. I will let you know if the oncologist says anything about it at my appointment on Wed.
I had to ask my sister to drive me to the grocery store to pick up groceries that I ordered online. And she helped me carry them in and put them away.
I live by myself so the next round, I'm going to ask if someone can stay with me a couple hours on days three and four and get me drinks, snacks. I think I would have drank and ate more if I wasn't so exhausted in bed. I was really hungry but too tired to get food.
I still didn't cut my hair and I realized it's actually hurting. I have a card from the chemo center for a complementary hair cut, at a salon. I will try to get there this week. Hope everyone is doing well.
-
I'm definitely going to give the SeaBands a try - I did use my prescription for Zofran for 3 days after my first round of chemo but I could still feel a bit of nausea. And that is what I loathe the most!
-
Has anyone else been told to take Zyrtec for bone pain? I took it the night before chemo, 2x the day of, and 2 days after. Had no bone pain... but that just could be me.
I'm just checking in - I've got 2 hours left of my work day. I have successfully worked an entire day! But I have to admit I just sit in a cubicle and move a mouse around.
-
Good luck with your first round Anne. Drink all the water you can and just sleep as much as possible for the first couple of days.
I see you have tissue expanders as well, have they told you that they are postponing your surgery for permanent implants? I can't imagine the oncologist is going to give the thumbs up to surgery in the middle of chemo - seems like a risk with our immune systems under attack.
-
BSchutt, great news!
Some people find that ginger candy or ginger ale reduces their nausea.
-
I had the first round this morning wasn't too bad. I did ask for something to calm my nerves and then I was good. Many trips to the bathroom as I tried to hydrate really well yesterday. My DH and then went and picked up my wig that we ordered a bit ago. Had it trimmed. I am happy with it.
JoyAl I am happy you made it through the day. I had my BMX with TE in February and it won't be till the area heals from radiation for the exchange. I couldn't start chemo till both my PS and BD released me. PS released me 6 weeks post op.
Dodgersgirl- I was just telling my DH about those. I wore them all the time when I was pregnant with my daughter. The nurse said this is a lot like pregnancy sickness so that made me think of them.
Momojcbc - The nurse told me today about the temperature thing. She did say that I knew a lot of what to expect --thanks to everyone on this site. It made today doable. Just a slight headache.

Hi!!! I was wondering what the recipe is for the tumeric any ginger broth is. I'm a big fan of both and would like to try it! If you could share any of your other vitamin/smoothie remedies I would love those too! I am a single mom and feel kind of alone in this. Thank you for sharing if you can!
-
Anne- I am glad it went well and you like your wig! I am still deciding about that.
Dodgersgirl- That is so sweet of you, I have a lot of info from my son so I think I am good. I did make an appointment for a second opinion.
ALL- I forgot to mention I use a diffuser and essential oil and I liked it when I was nauseous. I used peppermint and lavender together. Has anyone else had Gas pains? My tummy has been acting bloated and painful.
I googled this:
The health benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat:
Indigestion: One of the oldest and most highly regarded herbs for soothing digestion is peppermint. Peppermint oil is very helpful in digestion as it has a carminative property of expelling gas (from the stomach or intestines so as to relieve flatulence or abdominal pain or distension).
- Massage several drops on your abdomen, place a drop on wrists or inhale to soothe motion sickness or general nausea.
- Drinking mint tea has long been the antidote to an upset stomach.
- Inhaling peppermint oil is also said to help curb the appetite by triggering a sense of fullness.
Lavender for Health
Using lavender oil for your health is a common practice that has been around since Gattefossé's 1937 book about the benefits of essential oils and aromatherapy. Now nearly 80 years later, we've found even more uses for lavender oil than was originally predicted. Some common health uses for essential lavender oil include:
- Working as an Anti-Inflammatory and Antiseptic
- Improving Blood Circulation
- Working as a Health Diuretic and Detoxification Supplement
- Advancing Relaxing and Uplifting Moods Through Smell
- Stimulating Increased Health
- Healing Stomach Problems
- Working a Vulnerary Supplement for Cuts and Scrapes

I don't know about the broth, but you can chop up ginger and turmeric roots and steep them in hot water with black peppercorns (you can do it entirely with powdered spices if you prefer). Experiment with the taste--try adding lemon, or mint, or green tea, or stevia. I make up a pitcher of this and refrigerate it without straining it. I mix it about half-and-half with green tea or water.
Turmeric and ginger broth sounds great!
-
Momojcbc- thanks for that info on peppermint and lavender oil. I kept feeling like aromatherapy would be nice and now I think I have to try this!

Last night was not good as far as bone pain. It kept me awake most of the night. Tylenol helped a little. My temperature has also been hovering around 99.8. Went for a blood test today and talked to the nurse. WBC looked good and the rest of it was okay too. She said that the pain it probably at its peak from the Neulasta shot. She also said that the first chemo pain is always the worst and to call the doctor if temperature goes higher than 100.5. Claritin not helping at all. Hang in there ladies
-
Winsner1558 - sorry you are having bone pain that is interrupting sleep. Sure hope that SE improves for you ASa
-
Dodgersgirl- I hope you like it. I use my diffusers a ton. My kids even have one in their rooms. There are cheap ones on Amazon like 20ish, they work just fine.
Wisner- I hope you feel better today. I remember when my son had that bone pain, woke him up in the middle of the night. It was just once though the other shots never bothered him.
Are all you ladies getting Nuelasta? My doc did not presribe?
-
Hi, Faith1965. I like to use a veggy broth partial cube, grated fresh ginger (keep in the freezer indefinitely to grate), little of tumeric, sprinkle of soy sauce, parsley flakes or veggy flakes. Combination of whatever tastes good
The shakes vary. I put a scoop of protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, frozen strawberry or blueberries, 1/4c yogurt, maybe some apple, 8-10oz almond milk, about 1 tblsp. each of ground flax seed, chia seed, coconut oil or peanut butter. In the past I've added kale and parsley or cilantro for different flavor but right now it doesn't go well with me during chemo. Tastebud thing. You can really end up with a couple servings of veggies all in there.
I had neulasta onpro for each of my AC treatments and yes, I got some bone pain and the fist two times my skin/muscles were sore like they were full of lactic acid after workouts. Lasted a couple of days and then complete gone. I was told that with the Taxol and Carboplatin that I won't need it so that is good!
Those Sea-Band things sound awesome, I may have to check them out! I'd heard of people getting acupuncture.
Also, someone mentioned that their onc said that tumeric wasn't good while taking chemo but they ask every time what vit/supplements I'm on and it is one of them. I'm going to ask specifically on Thurs. when I get my first Taxol/Carbo. treatment. Who knows..maybe each doc has a different opinion. Wishing you all the best this week and hoping SE are minimal!

Hi All - I have been reading other posts from the sidelines but am now at a point where I feel like I need the support of others going through this part of my journey. I thought I was done after surgery and radiation. All ready to celebrate until I met with my oncologist thinking it was a follow up and consult as to next step. However, I learned that she misread my original pathology (mm vs. cm) which put me in an entirely different stage and, with the results of the oncotype dx, she laid everything out including though completely my choice, I may want to consider chemo. I decided I need to do everything possible to reduce the chance of recurrence so had a port placed on 3/31 and first chemo on 4/3.
Winsner1558 - I, too, had my first chemo on 4/3 and am still experiencing the bone pain. Fortunately, it is slowly subsiding with a little help from pain meds.
I honestly think the reason I am putting this all out here now is because no matter how you try to explain any of this to your family, friends, etc. there is no way they can ever understand the myriad of physical, mental, and emotional sides there are to this. So rather than take it out on them, this will be a better place for me to cry, scream, and laugh through it all. Thank-you so much for being here and sharing!
