Hello everyone,

My name is Jessie and I am new here. I am 32 years old and went in on Monday to have a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound done after finding 2 palpable lumps, one above my nipple and one at around the 1 0 clock position. When I left the imaging center I immediately got a call from my doctors office asking me to come in and discuss my results. They said my right breast was fine but my left was suspicious and they didn't want to do a fine needle biopsy and wanted to get me in for a surgical consult. I went to the imaging center to pick up my films and radiology report and I am terrified. I have more than the lumps i felt. i have micro calcification's and my mammogram looks like someone sprinkled salt on it. I made the mistake of opening up google and seeing what a BIRADS 5 meant. My consult is on Wednesday and I am just wondering if anyone can tell me what the process is like? Will my surgery be scheduled sooner rather than later? can I opt for a mastectomy at this time or should i wait? I'm very confused and overhwhelmed. Any advice would be great. Thank you in advance!

    I think they will want to do the surgery soon. I have a good friend that had a mammogram like yours in both breasts she described it as a christmas tree lighting up. She was in her 30s too. That was 25 years ago she is fine had surgery double mastectomy, radiation twice, chemo and DIEP reconstruction. It was scary but she is doing great. I had just left side 2 small tumors and I had mastectomy and DIEP no radiation or chemo but did hormone therapy.

    They will want to check lymph nodes probably at the same time as your surgery. Your situation might be different since you have many micro calcifications traditional biopsy might not be possible.

    The Surgeon will make sure you understand that a biopsy is needed to determine the character of the tissue in the area/s of concern. You should expect a clinical examination of your chest. You might be offered a biopsy procedure then and there. You might have an excisional biopsy taken soon in a surgery at a Hospital or Surgery Clinic. If the Surgeon wants wire placement in the suspicious area/s to be biopsied, that would be done at a Hospital.

    If you have excisional biopsy, the preparations and procedures are as for most any major surgery -- there would likely be a general physical exam, lots of health history questions, an EKG, maybe a chest X-ray. You should be ready to return home within a few hours after the start of your biopsy surgery.

    If you would want mastectomy surgery, you would have to wait for biopsy results indicating serious disease for which mastectomy would be a surgical treatment option.

    For now, and for at least until your Pathology report has been made, take care to keep yourself and your household members well. Avoid crowds. Avoid sick people, even household members of anyone sick with fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, feeling unwell, anything like that. You do not want to catch anything that would necessitate any delay about your health care appointments.
