How long did tiredness last? Anything help?

I finished radiation just over two months ago and I am still so sleepy! Just wondering how other people fared - I wasn't expecting to be so tired for so long.

I read that yoga helps post-radiation fatigue, so I have upped the amount I was doing. My RO also suggested I take an iron supplement as I was a bit low. I assume I just have to wait it out, but I'm sort of eager to get back into life again and I feel like I can't even clean my house (not that I was ever so great at that!).

My breast surgeon told me recently that the fatigue lasts for 6 weeks to two months, but I dunno- I don't feel like I've hit the upswing yet.

Any suggestions? Would love to hear how long it took people to recover!

I was really tired after radiation (finished end of Nov 16) not helped by going straight back to work the following day at the busiest time of the year! What I found really helped was exercise. Long hard hilly forests walks. I thought i was dying most of the time (terribly unfit following 2 surgeries and radiation) but honestly, I could almost feel the fatigue blowing out. Lots of studies seem to support exercise as assisting with fatigue.

Hi Penner: I was absolutely exhausted after rads but really pushed myself to remain active, mostly long walks. Also, I found it really helpful to avoid napping during the day so, with the walking, I could have a decent night's sleep. Melatonin really helped if sleep was elusive. Gradually over about six months the fatigue lifted. I think my experience was fairly typical.

It would be helpful for those wanting to respond to you if you would go to your profile and enter your diagnosis, treatments, etc.. All the best. Anne

Penner, I finished rads on Dec 9, 2016. It took me until this month to really feel like I have my usual energy. I would feel occasional bursts of energy here and there, but it really took a long time to recover back to a somewhat normal state. Not sure what other treatment you've had, so that plays a part as well.

Took me about a year to recover fro the treatment year. We are all different. Some say excercise helps, I couldn't have gotten out the door😂 Give yourself as much time as you need, it will happen.

    Hi everyone!

I too am wondering when I'll get myenergy back from all this. I had my DBMX in July, started chemo on 8/6- 4 AC and 16 Taxol treatments. Finished chemo 12/27, took 30 day break before starting radiation on 2/20 sooo I've been feeling like a zombie for about 9 months now. I was told it could take up to a year for me to get my energy back to "somewhat" normal. With the warmer weather I've started walking a lot more and so far I don't feel any difference in my energy level. I'm not giving up tho...

Lori - it took me a year. That said, I didn't work very hard at getting up & exercising. I think that would make a difference.

MinusTwo, thank you. I've dug my Fitbit out of the drawer and started using it a few weeks ago. I used to get in 12,000 to 15,000 steps a day a year ago, now I'm lucky if I get in 3,000 a day. At least now I'm back to keeping track of it :-

Lori do not worry about logging in large numbers of steps. Start off by walking 500 steps per hour, you may find that gives you an energy spurt and you end up doing more. Remember that this will pass, take one day at a time

Thanks for all the replies, everyone! I am surprised to hear it takes so long. I will try to do more exercising - I know it will be easier when the weather is a little better to get out and do my walking. I am doing yoga several times a week, and take melatonin and magnesium to help with sleeping. I nap a lot as well, as I get so tired if I don't.

I added in my treatments to my profile - thanks for the suggestion, Anne!

Lookforward, thank you for the suggestion, I'll try it! I've added more stairs to my daily total, which will be easy to do as we have 2 sets of stairs in our house :)

I am SO aggravated.... I started rads at the end of January, and finished in the beginning of March. I tried to work in the beginning, as I had worked throughout dx and surgery, but the fatigue was so bad I had to take STD.

It's been four weeks since my last treatment, and I'm still wiped out. (Take into consideration I'm pushing 60, have high blood pressure- controlled with meds-, autoimmune thyroid disease, and no one to help me out at home with food/nutrition, chores, etc.)

Today my RO told me I should be fine, should be back at work by now. So my fatigue doesn't exist? When I try to do too much and start to "grey out", that isn't happening? When I run a minor errand and collapse on the couch as soon as I get home, I'm doing that by choice? I am losing my mind from boredom, but can't do the things I want to do?- I'm imagining it?

She made me feel like some kind of slacker or scammer. I'm usually described as more of a workaholic. Having a professional flat out deny that I feel what I feel is flabbergasting.

    ARGH.

Fotheringay, don't let anyone tell you it's just in your head as it's not your imagination at all. Sometimes some of us take longer to bounce back. I was originally told it could take a few weeks, a few months and some people take a year or more. Not sure how true that is. I've been exhausted and not up to doing much at all since my DBMX last July. My PS, MO and RO told me that my body has been through a lot. First surgery, chemo and finally radiation. I was told to just take it one day at a time and the more I push myself the more fatigued I may get. My DH reminds me to sit down, take a shower, relax, its nap time or your pushing yourself. I realize it would be a whole lot different if I were single, working and trying to take care of myself as you are not to be totally wiped out. Could you be depressed? It can cause all sorts of problems and you have a ton on your plate. I didn't know I was depressed until I told my PCP that I don't even want to get out of bed anymore years ago. I have an appointment coming up with him to go over my meds with me just to see if my depression is involved. I don't think it is but we'll see. Just remember you have to come first 💜

According to The Oncologist, "a journal devoted to medical and practice issues for surgical, radiation, and medical oncologists",

"Our recent studies, with sample sizes of several hundred consecutive patients, have shown that >80% of outpatients receiving chemotherapy or radiotherapy reported some degree of CRF as assessed using the Fatigue Symptom Inventory (Fig. 3) ([26] and G.R. Morrow et al., manuscript in preparation). For example, in a subset of patients with breast cancer who were receiving radiotherapy, fatigue was the most commonly experienced side effect, with 84% of patients reporting fatigue, compared with 75% reporting pain and 25% reporting nausea [27]." [emphasis mine]

So SOMEONE has made a link between radiation and nausea!

    Hi ,

Finished my 20 rad tx's on March 14 ,2017. My fatigue has worsened over the last week . The first week was ok , but now I feel drained . So glad to hear others say this is normal . Exercise does help me , but when I have any down time and am alone, it hits me like a ton of bricks. It helps to read of others going through it or having gone through it as it relieves the anxiety I sometimes feel when I get so overwhelmingly tired .

Thanks for being here knowledge is power and kinship with otherpeople going through it helps me the most .

    WenchLori - Yippee! Done!

Elem - Hi, there. Happy to hear from you, and share our experiences. I was done on 3/21 - fatigue started this week - hit me hard on Monday, but feel like it is getting progressively better. Have been sleeping 11-12 hours a night & trying to eat well. Not able to add on exercise yet - waiting to discuss some issues with MO on 4/4.

Elm, we are all here to give support to each other. I'm so looking forward to the day when I can walk to the mailbox and not be to tired to read the mail once I'm back inside! My MO has gone through cancer treatments and says he still has days when he's exhausted and it's been well over a year since his treatments. He's very reassuring and supportive and says it's different for everyone.

Celia, thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I sat down to delete my old alarms and add my new alarms for all upcoming FU appointments and I'm exhausted just from that! I've also heard of the after radiation fatigue being intense. With everything else we've all been through.... we got this!!!

Fotheringay, I am shocked by your doctor - that is really weird - fatigue after radiation seems really well-documented. How odd that she made you feel as if you should be over it already.

Glad you had a better day, Elem! Hello to everyone else - good to read about everyone's progress, and to know I'm not alone.

I am now nearly three months after finishing and am still so sleepy. I have been doing yoga four times a week and now with the better weather I am trying to walk more. I am finding it all very difficult however. I just get a couple of good hours in a day and its hard to get everything done that I want to do.

Congrats WenchLori and Elem on completing your rads!!!

I met with my original surgeon last week, and she, unlike the the RO, did NOT dismiss my fatigue.

She said, "You're STILL swollen! your body is still directing energy toward healing your body." She got it. She heard me; she even hugged me! I feel slightly vindicated.

I am making progress. I'm no longer either sleeping or flattened out on the couch in a stupor all day. Other than getting to 2-3 medical appointments a week, i'm trying to get up and do a chore once a day, so not only do I help de-crapify my house before it gets condemned from months of my being sick, but I'm slowly working on getting my stamina back.

    Hello all!

I will start radiation treatment in the next week or so.

I feel so great now finally after several months of chemo and surgery,

and am returning to work. I will have 33 treatments,

and am not looking forward to it at all.

I finally feel fantastic, but now with radiation, it may rob me of my energy!

I know everyone is different, and it may not happen, but losing this great feeling,

with no residual cancer according to the pathology report.

I am on cloud 9!  My oncologist did inform me that I can work and

do my treatments and work.  I will definitely go on exercise regeme.

Thank you for all in this community for all the support.

Carrie, that's wonderful! Having someone stand by you during all this crap is very vindicating (if that's a word)? My sleepiness has started full force the past 3 days. I think I've been awake for about 4 hours today so far. I'm still tired but it will pass soon I know but not soon enough for me. My yard and garden are waiting for me!

Bravenurse, I felt the same way after recovering from my DBMX and chemo. With my radiation over I'm very tired and it's hard to stay awake. They told me it could be just a few days or a few weeks. I'm 🙏for a few days :-)

    Hi to everyone 👋

    Hi Wenchlori,

After my radio therapy the second week I had serious fatigue issues. I could not even cook dinner . But after a week I am back to normal . Like it never happened. Hope it'll be the same for you .❌

I'm so tired everything exhausts me . like some others have said simple chores wear me out. I had 33 radiation treatments last one Dec 15, 2016. I started Arimidex therapy right after the rad. I had only minor fatigue until AFTER my reconstruction which was done March 9. I know the radiation has complicated my incision healing and I still have my drain pumping 40ml a day. So I don't know what is making me feel this way. Is it the radiation, the reconstruction, or might it be the Arimidex?

Wow , it could be a combination with everything you have going on. I believe for me it was the radiation . It seemed to take everything I had to get off the couch at times. But it lasted just about two weeks post radiotherapy and cleared. At first I thought it was the tamoxifen . But I am still taking it since the fatigue subsided. So it was definitely rads for me. Take care and rest when you need too .❤
Hope you get your energy back soon and b

Swivel2020, I agree with Elem, your body has been put thru the wringer! I spent the past week sleeping 16 to 18 hours a day but I've gotten so much done this weekend and I'm still awake at 8:30 pm tonightlol I'm hoping the exhausted period is over but my DH thinks I'll crash tomorrow. We'll see 🤞

I had a decent time through my 33 rads. I wasn’t tired. I did lat downevery afternoon to rest. Did not go to sleep just rest 1/2 hour. I think it helped. Now after rads I am exhausted. Trying melatonin to sleep longer. I only get 5-6 hours. I am wondering if the anestrozole causing the tired. I see the oncologist in a few weeks. I don’t want to give up on this med. I seem to be doing ok with it. I am afraid to keep bouncing around. Any thoughts out there

nyr4evr For me it was the radiation . I was fatigued post radiation for a couple of weeks . Everyday around 3 pm . I would hit a brick wall . But luckily it went away within a couple if weeks. I did not take an aromatase inhibitor, so I cannot tell you if it could be the case for you . I do take tamoxifen and initially thought it could have been the cause , but no it was not. Good luck going forward. Things will get better⭕️
