I'm originally from the UP of michigan, grew up in Wisconsin, and lived in Milwaukee after college. Met DH to be, and eventually moved ro the Rochester, NY area. I miss the midwest! DS is going to university in Wisconsin! I don't think.he'll ever move back home! (Boo hoo). I worked residential rehabilitation for many years, but I rarely saw clients with pure upper extremity amputations. Those were usually covered by OT services. I hope you get enough.rehab, as that can make a world of difference in regaining your independence /function.

DiV:
So happy to hear from you! My thoughts are with you!
-
Sjs, yes, you need to measure the output of each drain separately for a 24 hour period. Every PS is different on when they'll take them out. Mine says the output needs to be less than 15 ml in a 24 hour period, which is why I'm incessantly whining about mine which is consistently putting out 25-45 ml per day after 2-1/2 weeks.
Some people just make more drainage than others, and I'm one of the lucky ones.
DiV, thanks for popping in with an update. We've all been wondering how you are doing and it sounds like your attitude is the absolute best. I'm glad you're doing so well. Continued thoughts and prayers coming your way.

I have my one week follow up with the surgeon this afternoon. Fingers crossed for clear margins, clean nodes, and low oncotype score.
I also really want to be allowed to use deodorant again.
-
hi all
I had a single modified radical mastectomy on March 29. I had axillary lymph dissection and was told by surgeon that he took levels 1 and 2. I am still waiting to hear the pathology results although it has been a week.
Does anyone else have experience with the results from one of these and also how treatment went from there?
Thanks anxious
-
Oh DiV, it's so good to hear from you. Love to you.
-
Lovepugs & Mojo, hang in there, waiting is so hard, huh? I'm still waiting on my Oncotype, said it could take a couple weeks.
Today is 4 weeks since my mast surgery. I'm feeling really good and I actually sometimes forget about it, then I'll feel something weird and go oh ya... THAT. Part of my PT has been some spring cleaning. The other day I cleaned some windows and now my triceps are feeling it. Love the feeling.
-
I just want to say thank you to everyone here for giving so much advice and sharing your experiences. It is really helpful.
I called and told the doctor that I was concerned about having a mammogram one week after surgery and they agreed to reschedule it to when I am "less tender." So that is a relief. This afternoon I have my post op appointment. I think they just try and schedule all the appointments together because a lot of people drive really far to go to Dana Farber so they are trying to make it more convenient. -
Oh that's great, Law. One less thing. How are you feeling?
-
I was doing pretty well but I went back to work yesterday and that was harder on my SNB area than I expected. Apparently I move move my arm a lot more working at my desk than I did sitting back around at home
Also the bandage came off completely on Sunday so it was less protected than it had been - my boyfriend put a giant bandaid over it for me but it seems to have irritated my skin so right now it is completely uncovered. The actual incision looks okay but the entire area around it hurts. I'm glad the doctor will be looking at it today.
-
Oh wow... ya take it easy and glad you are seeing the doctor. Don't want to mess around with this stuff or it'll bite you back. Not sure if you are allergic to medical tape, but I've been putting maxi pads and medical tape on my leaking frankenboob. My drain holes have finally sealed up but they are awfully red and that concerns me, not sure what to do about that.
-
Law, I can't imagine having a mammogram one week after surgery. I'm not sure I could stop myself from hurting someone if they tried to smash my breasts right now. I've been using transparent dressings with gauze pads since I changed my bandage on Saturday. The brand name is Nexcare, but I just buy the Walgreens brand. It's the same thing they use at the doctor's office and is waterproof, so it lasts a few days.
-
Oh I like the look of those Nexcare pads! Thanks Pugs.
-
Hi all, I met with the surgeon for the first time after neo-adjuvant chemo. What he said was a shock to me, he said he would not take out any nodes if I am willing to do radiaion. I had one node positive before chemo, and after chemo, all nodes look healthy under ulreasound. I am totally fine to radiation, but how could not taking any nodes out possible ?
-
Thanks lovepugs! I think I will get some of those nexcare/Walgreens ones - even if the doctor gives me a new one today it would be nice to be able to change it. good luck at your appointment today!
-
Sjsparks. . .glad to hear your pain is manageable. I kept a record on my phone of the drain output. I think Dh emptied them twice daily and I recorded the amounts each time then totaled them daily. When I hit day 9 and one started coming out on its own, PS had me come and and removed all 4 based on the total output.
DiV. . .you have an amazing attitude and so glad to hear from you. Take care, you will remain in my prayers.
I'm having a better day today. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Scottie
-
Hey Scottie, so glad to hear you are having a better day. Yay!!!
-
Stepholosophy I don't know the answer to your question. Maybe call the dr and ask for them to ex plain it to.you?
-
DiV, you are a remarkable woman. You sound like you are adapting really well. Thank you for checking in with us. Mojo, I had ALND but not modified radical mx. I had levels l/ll nodes removed. It was sore for quite a while but so far no LE.
-
Well, I didn't get the news I was hoping for. He took 5 nodes during the sentinel node biopsy, and 4 were positive. 2 of those were extending into the surrounding tissue. So I get to have another surgery next week to remove some more nodes, and then chemo. I'm so disappointed right now.
-
I'm sorry Pugs.
-
lovepugs77, I'm so sorry you got that news. Now you know and can go forward with a plan. In the meantime, love the pugs. I know my dogs are sometimes the only things that keep me going.
-
Unfortunately, I am currently pug-less. I do have two sweet kitties to love on, though.
-
So sorry to hear your news, pugs. Not what any of us want to hear. We're all here with positive thoughts for you.
MJ

DiV It's good to hear from you. Thank you for giving us an update. You remain in my thoughts and prayers.
Law193 I'm glad they changed that mammo for you, can't imagine having one a week after LX. I found the SNB area to be especially sensitive. Hopefully you are able to get some relief from the soreness.
