DCIS s/p lumpectomy plan b/l mastectomy but considering delay?

I opted for b/l mastectomy with immediate reconstruction as opposed to repeat lumpectomy (to include nipple) and radiation. I'm currently in very intense work training for my career. Planned to have b/l mastectomy later this month but it will mess up completion of my program and make my 3rd year much more difficult as I would have to make up for my missed rotation. If I did surgery during a different rotation that is more elective, I don't have to make it up. My sister said what about pushing back mastectomy. It would push it back about 3wks, BS said it may work. Has anyone done this? . My genes are pending. Thoughts?

I did this, not for the same reasons but due to scheduling difficulties. There was about a two month delay between my lumpectomy with unclean marginsand my mastectomy. My whole team assured me it was fine.

I also had to wait 2 months between my 2nd lumpectomy and my MX due to scheduling issues. If it were me, I would really want to complete that program and be able to focus on recovery. I would postpone. I'm sure it is hard enough as it is to focus on your program, so best wishes in completing and speedy recovery to you!

pgmit - it somewhat depends on your hormone tests. I was HER2+ and my doc said it wouldn't be a good idea to wait more than a couple of week. That may fit your 3 week plan anyway.

Because of my teaching schedule I waited near to 5 months between 2nd LX and MX...I did start Arimidex, though, in this time...

    1. I elected to have a mastectomy of the right breast instead of another lumpectomy. Because of scheduling issues with my breast surgeon and the plastic surgeon I have to wait 6 weeks from my dx date. What makes things worse is I was laid off after 13 years in September and the unemployment just ran out. I need back on my feet ASAP so I can get back to work. And.... just knowing I have cancer and having to wait to remove it is an emotional roller coaster. I'm the strong one but lately I sure haven't felt that way. Do what's best for you and your career. Best of luck and continued health and happiness

Thanks for all the responses ladies! My boss ended up switching some things up to make it an easy decision and so I can go forward with the surgery now without making it more difficult for me down the road with training! Thank goodness! Now to get through the surgery!

Vixenmom67, so sorry to hear your were laid off. You'll be in my thoughts...hang in there!
