Hi!  I'm new here, and was recently diagnosed with ductal carcinoma insitu.  I have a lumpectomy coming up next week, and I am worried about general anethesia.  I've been put under before (for kidney stones years ago), without any trouble, but I find myself really dreading it this time, and feeling very nervous about it.  My question is.... for a lumpectomy, is general anesthesia always the route they take, or do they ever perform a lumpectomy with the patient given conscious sedation, or, MAC anesthesia? I am going to give my healthcare provider a call about this, but wanted to get opinions/experiences here.  Thanks!

Remali, glad you're calling your doctor for options. I had LX and asked my surgeon about local anesthesia and she said she never did it with a local, but I've had other invasive surgeries and procedures with locals. I think it might depend on the surgeon.

Thanks Ceanna, good to know.  I imagine they need to use general since there is always the risk of the patient moving during surgery otherwise, I got to thinking about that.

Remali, I actually didn't ask about alternatives, but my surgeon used general on me. I believe that was the only option as he was also doing a sentinel node biopsy at the same time.
