Callback after 3D for calcifications - freaking out
Comments
-
We moved recently and I don't have a primary care physician or an OB yet so I don't have anyone to discuss this with. I had my first 3D mammogram on Tuesday and 4 days later got a letter saying they want 3 more views because of calcifications at 9 o'clock on the right breast. It didn't say what type of calficications or their shape or macro or micro or pattern. These all seem to be important factors. Just so very vague, and of course I'm freaking out. They did have my last films to compare but those weren't 3D. I do have very dense breasts which I guess can make it hard but I thought with 3D there were fewer callbacks. I got called back once before the last time we moved and it was because they didn't have films from before to compare. Why would the report be so vague? I actually got the copy they would send to my doctor if I had one so it's not like I'm getting an abbreviated version.

Calcifications can be either benign or concerning depending on the size (smaller is more likely to be a problem) and pattern (scattered is most likely fine, clustered can go either way, in a line is a problem). When my cancer was found, the calcifications had both benign and concerning features, so the first step was additional views so they could get a better sense of the pattern. When that didn’t provide any more information, I was sent for a biopsy.
Hopefully the additional views will give them the information they need to either have your pursue further treatment or rule out a problem. If it is a problem, the fact it is being caught by calcifications (vs. an actual mass) usually means they are catching it very early which is a good thing.
Where in NJ are you?

Thanks for answering! We're from Morris County. I had read everything you said but I'm super worried because it seems like they can see more with 3D and that's supposed to cut way back on the number of false positives for calcifications. I've read a lot of information that callbacks for calcifications mostly turn out fine but I'm not sure if the fact that my mammo was 3D means I have a higher chance of it being a problem. The report was so vague also. I thought it would mentions size and pattern - more of a specific reason to call me back. This area of the breast is one in which I've had some cysts in the past which have always turned out to be fine. Just so worried...

Hi NJ Mom, I just got called back for calcs, as well - no further info on branching, lone, small, nothing! I am a data person so this drives me crazy!
Mine are in the part of my breast were I have a ductal excision with papillomas, behind my nipple. The military lost my paperwork with the test results, but I was verbally told there was hyperplasia. Also I have focal asymmetry in my left breast, I've had it for a while.
I also have extremely dense breasts and just moved to a new city, as well. I was supposed to have a 3D mammo but the appt was put in the system wrong, so I had the normal one. I am high risk with busy breast so there is always "something." My doctor felt bad that he didn't put in the 3D for me, I'll be having those from here on out.
When are you going back in? My appt is Monday morning. Sigh.

I go Monday afternoon. I got called back the first time after I moved to the last town I lived in too. I'm adopted so don't know my family history so I'm always freaked out about this stuff. I think that might make me more apt to get called back. I just haven't seen a lot of people saying that their reports just said "calcifications." They usually say size and pattern. Ugh.

I know this sounds crazy, but I just had two friends diagnosed with BC with no family history and I have others who have a strong family history and all is well, they don't even get called back! So it would be great to know but maybe "it is what it is" pretty much applies to this whole, random realm! Sending you a hug for tomorrow, will check back with you after our big day.

Good luck to you too!

Checking back with you, NJMom17! My appt went ok, After 6 more pictures and an Ultrasound, they tried to look through my dense breast. It's Birads 2, as usual, probably benign. The doctor did explain that I have scattered microcalcs throughout my breast, none look suspicious on their own and none are clustering, branching, etc. So we'll just be doing 3D pictures from now on and keeping an eye on things every 6 months. Moving on now to my "congrats you turned 50" colonoscopy, LOL! It's always something.
Please let us know how your appt went! Thinking of you.

Congrats that you are good for another 6 months! I kind of thought I wasn't getting out of there w/o an order for a biopsy and I was right, so I have to do that. It's a tiny area, just a few mm. There are calcifications grouped but not in a specific shape or line. The radiologist gave me the 80% likely nothing number and actually said she was tempted to re-image at 6 months but figured we should know for sure. The mammo tech said the radiologist didn't seem very concerned. So fingers crossed.
And BTW the colonoscopy is just the best nap you've ever had. I had to have one at 45 because of stomach issues. But you want to get Suprep because it makes the preparation much easier. And if you know how to chug (beer works if you want to practice) that helps with the prep too!

Hi! Just wanted to chime in to say that i had scattered microcalcs in a "region" and had to have a biopsy. The results came back benign and I hope the same happens for you! Please keep us posted!
-
So after a three week wait the biopsy says it's ADH. Could be worse so I'm trying to be a glass half full person. My college roommate had breast cancer at 25 and 37 and tells me this is not a huge deal, and I should just see the surgeon, do what she says and get regular check ups so that's what I'm going to do! Thanks for the support everyone!

Has anyone ever got a call back from your Doctor saying you have stage 4 breast cancer after a first time having a 3D mammogram done??? I've been going yearly and been told I was fine.
-
Sury, how would they know you have stage 4 from a mammogram? Stage 4 means metastacized to other organs/bone that the mammogram couldn't see. Were you told this
