Did your MRI showed larger tumour than actual
just got the results of my MRI. Right breast as per mammogram showed a cancerous tumor. However on the ultrasound initially 3 weeks ago it was only 1.4 centimeters. Now the MRI shows a 2.5 centimeter mass. My question to everyone is did your MRI show a larger tumor then the final pathology or was it accurate?

mine was actually opposite, the u/s showed my tumor about 4cm and the MRI showed more like 3.7cm... usually the mri is more accurate, but don't quote me on that...
what time of cancer do you have? Is it aggressive? maybe it grew in 3 weeks?
good luck on your journey, this is a great site to get information on.

I have invasive ductal carcinoma, hasn't been removed yet so don't know stage. it is a grade 2/3 and was smaller on u/s. I also have mild to moderate background parenchymal enhancement - don't know what that means either?
Hate the fact that it may be larger than initially.

-
yes. My ultrasound showed 1cm. I had a needle biopsy a week before MRI. MRI showed 2.1cm. I freaked out. Actual size was 1.1 measured after lumpectomy. The MRI is very sensitive and showed all the tissue reactions to the recent biopsy which made the reading inaccurate
-
In my case the MRI result showed larger than the US, as did the actual tumour once removed.
-
My ultrasound was unable to detect anything. MRI showed 7mm tumor; actual tumor was 1.8cm.
-
My MRI was accurate to the ultrasound and mammo. I was 1.1 cm at dx and then 1.2 cm by the time surgery rolled around.
-
My tumor was measured at 1.5 cm by US. The MRI showed my tumor as over 2 cm. Because I am HER2+ and my tumor was over 2 cm, I qualified for neoadjuvant chemo with Perjeta. The chemo shrunk my tumor so I don't know what size it really was. If you are HER2+, having the bigger measurement is a good thing!
I was told that MRI measurements are more accurate than US.
-
No, my MRI showed the tumor size to be exactly the same as the U/S. At biopsy it turned out to be only slightly larger.
-
yes lowcountygirlthat is what I am doing, freaking out a bit also noted on mri was a bb enhancing mass in a different spot same breast 1.1 by point 8 cm BIRADS 4 - going for a biopsy on that one now- that is freaking me out too. don't know what a BB enhancing mass is but the 8cm thing has got me very frightened.
-
My MRI showed a separate tumor altogether that was not detected on the mammogram or sonogram. It's about 3 cm, the same as the biopsied tumor & believed to be just as cancerous.
-
US showed me as 8mm, I think. MRI 1.2 -- then actual 1.8 from surgical pathology. However, I'm ILC which is sneaky and often larger upon surgery.
Good luck and try not to worry too much. I know that's hard. I'm just past your phase of "all the unknowns" myself. Believe it or not, it does get better once you have all the info in hand.
-
Hi Tpralph: My MRI showed 2.8 cm. and my tumor turned out to be 6.7 cm post surgery. I guess it was just another case of how misleading ILC can be. Ann

Biopsy showed 2 cm. MRI showed 4 cm. Sx path came back 7 cm. The only accurate readings is what you'll find on your path report after sx. Up till then, everything is a rough estimate.

My u/s showed 2.1 but the NP called me after the MRI and said 9 cm. I about fell over. MONTHS later my oncologist said that there was enhancement on my MRI and that we wouldn't know for sure until surgery (after chemo was finished). The cancer that was left (like sand, my surgeon said) was 2.1, which the ultrasound said. My MO doesn't think MRIs are great at measuring. Hope this helps.
-
I didn't have an MRI but my ultrasound said my tumor was 1.4 cm - so wrong. It was 2.8 cm. I was shocked

My US showed the tumor was smaller than it actually was, and the MRI showed it was larger than it actually was. My MO said the truth is usually somewhere in the middle as MRI tends to overstate the size. He was correct in my case.
-
The estimates for my two tumors from the mammogram, ultrasound, and MRI were 6mm and 7mm; the actual tumors extracted were 2.4cm and 1.4cm. I was shocked, but my blessed surgeon got it all out!

hi,
My ultrasound showed 2cm and the MRI said it could be 9 -11c. Seemed possible as the needle biopsy said lobular. But after my surgery the pathology was a lobular & ductal tumor at 2.6cm and the MRI "tenticals" were some pre-cancerous and weird tissue but not a tumor. So I wound up being staged at 2a.
Best of luck and hugs!
-
my mammograms, ultrasound and MRI were all within 0.1 cm of each other. So extremely close to each other.
-
The radiologist who did my needle biopsy said the tumor was 7 mm. The MRI done a couple weeks later showed it to be 1.5 cm. Final pathology from the lumpectomy showed it to be 7 mm.
MRI missed the 2 mm in a sentinal lymph node and also seemed to show DCIS around the tumor. No DCIS was found in my final pathology, but thanks to the MRI the surgeon took a lot of extra breast tissue. Of course that meant really good margins, but also a really big chunk of my breast was removed unnecessarily. Imaging is a useful tool when it comes to estimating tumor size, but until the final pathology report is done.....

My tumor was large and showed that size in all the testing - 6 cm including MRI. However, I had more nodes than testing showed including MRI.

I just got my MRI results and they indicated I had three additional masses in right breast and now there's one in the left breast. It's very disconcerting to me that these weren't found with the 4 mammograms and 3 ultrasounds that were done prior to the original lumpectomy. Now ONC says she's pretty sure I will need a mastectomy on right breast and now I have to have an MRI guided biopsy on the left...before we make fi

Hi Candy - I'm on the same ride and it is horrible. Best advice I've gotten is to breathe and try and focus on living today. Do whatever you can to distract yourself- for me it's running and playing games with the kids. I had another mass show up on MRI and was just told it's benign. Now waiting to do bone scan for two spots on breast bone - BS said he believes will also be nothing, but who knows? I know what it feels like to wake up every morning thinking I have cancer. I truly hope you get some good news
-
My MRI showed 7mm and it was actually 1.8cm.
-
I had a lumpectomy. My BS said there was no node involvement but when the Path report came back it showed a micromet in the SN. He was surprised. I was stunned and scared. He said it would get me chemo. Wasn't his call. My ONC was undecided so she ordered the Oncotype test. Thank goodness she did. Score was 11. 33 radiation treatments but no chemo.
Doctors can say with certainty what they think but obviously they aren't infalliable. My BS told me they must have dissected multiple times to find mine. Regardless it was there.
We all know all these tests we undergo can be a hit or miss sometimes. Scary but true.
Good luck!

Hi Candy,
So sorry to hear that! I had a similar situation. The ultrasound showed one tumor, approximately 2cm. The MRI showed 3 "suspicious" spots in my left breast and 2 "suspicious" spots in my right breast. Lymph nodes clean.
Well, I decided on mastectomy for several reasons but this MRI scared me very much. I had a double mastectomy a couple of weeks ago. The pathology report came back with a 2.5cm tumor, rest of the tissue was benign and two positive lymph nodes. Completely different from what the MRI showed. Also, I had annual mammograms for the last 7-8 years and this tumor never showed on a mammogram. I guess these tests are reliable most of the time but not always......
Good luck with your decision!
-
Well I was the one that put this question out. so My MRI showed a 2.5 cm tumour which turned out to be a 2.2 cm afterall. and the 0.8 (or was it 0.7) turned out to be 0.8cm.
Horizons I also have one out of two lymph involvement (might be more ofcourse was just a snb) do you have a treatment plan for those nodes yet? I wont be seeing anyone for a couple of weeks and only got my path report online at a patient portal from the hospital site.
-
No, I do not have a treatment plan yet. I am waiting for the oncotype score. I also have an appointment for a 2nd opinion next week. I feel very anxious about chemotherapy but trying to prepare for that. However, I would like to make sure that chemotherapy is beneficial to my type of cancer. I go back and forth......everything is so scary!
-
Horizons how many lymph did they remove?
-
Tpralph, they removed 2 sentinel nodes during the mastectomy. Both positive. Then they removed 3 axillary lymph nodes, all three negative. So, 5 total.
Are you going to have any further treatment? What are your thoughts on that? Someone mentioned tamoxifen or ovaries removal....
