swimming poofy

Amoena do some really nice tankini high on the chest tops, with really good pockets in them. Microbead forms work well in the water too. There are patterns to make them yourself, or Mary from Mastectomysolutios.com will make them for you for a really good price.
-
It's funny that the suits I saw at Land's End that I thought would be perfect for a MX suit,,, were not available that way. Like that tankini. I saw a couple that were higher on the chest that would be perfect but they are not available as MX suits. I think they need one of us on the design team!!
Meanwhile, I did order the MX version of their tugless tank,, which I have had several over the years and really liked. So I'll see how that suit works out. I need to work on my poofy!!
-
Hi glennie, I feel the same way about a lot of companies ,even some that are making Mx items, a lot of them get it wrong!
Good luck with your pouffy!
-
My tugless tank with pockets arrived and it fits nicely! I still haven't "made" my poofy yet, but I shoved it in the pocket and it works OK, just like that. (well for the 2 mins I had the suit on!) It seems to be high enough on the chest that I don't think it will have gap issues when I bend over. I tried it and it seems OK. It has a nice pattern too so it kind of hides the flaws!Let me see if I can put a link: http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-tugless-tank-leaf-one-piece-swimsuit/id_261202
I got the purple one.
-
glenni, hope you got it on sale! LOL. It's cute

yes! It was on sale!

BUMPING for the summer !! -
I've been wearing a Lands' End suit since 2010 and am happy with how it comes up under my rt arm where 21 nodes are missing. I do look "chopped"up in sleeveless anything. But I've not tried wearing the suit or going swimming since a 2014 surgery that took my other breast. Counting on both prosthesis to be swimming at the same level on my chest when I exit has me worried. Thanks for listening...never told that to anyone before.
-
having been looking around for suits lately, I agree with the statements above that many are "doing it wrong". Um, if I can tell from the photos that all of the models you're using for your mastectomy suits have their natural breasts and not prostheses, maybe everything you're making is not cut correctly and will look slightly less than natural / risk gaping on someone who is working with prostheses? It's not like there's not enough people out there who've had mastectomies to invite them/ us to actually try out suits and/or model for them!
That said (tho I do feel better having gotten it off my chest!
, I'd forgotten about the poofy trick so thanks for the reminder/bump - if I ever find a suit I'll have to try it. My beanbag swim form is really hard, easy to get out of shape, and kinda heavy.

Bu.pi g in case anyone needs it right now!

Hi, I'm too stupid to make these, and I really need them!
When you wrap and roll, does it eventually come out as an egg roll shape or as a sphere?
Is there a cheaper alternative to the Amoena swim forms? Perhaps the beaded ones that Erica recommends on breastfree.org?
-
This didn't quite work out for me. I ended up with a long meshy mess . I just bought two small bath poofies and pin them in my bathing suit cups, so they don't come floating out. I can't wear them long because excoriate my skin ( I have a lot of Scar Tissue on my chest and it is still pretty sensitive.)
-
you could make a cover for them. I think the trick is when you have the tube and you start winding, to twist the lump tight then pull the tube over the tight twist. And repeat.
-
I know this is an old post how do I find the directions for a poofy? I had LMX kids are taking me to a mineral springs pool, and I need a way to get a Left boob.
-
Goingcrzy8 - thanks for the chuckle -with your comment "I need a way to get a left boob"...I need one too for swimming. I don't know what a poofy is, but I want one. I haven't been swimming for SO LONG!!!
-
Try this thread, it starts with written instructions:
https://community.breastcancer.org/forum/82/topics...
If you have a sewing machine and have access to microbeads, this is another option:
http://mastectomysolutions.com/sew-your-own-breast...
My preference is for the sewn breast forms. I made myself 2 pairs for our trip to the Caribbean and they worked so well that I now I also use them in my day-to-day mastectomy bra. Note that microbeads are no longer sold in Canada so I opened an old travel pillow and voila! Rather than buy new bathing suit material, I used an old bathing suit and cut that up.
Hope this helps and, happy poofy-making.

ty that makes more sense, guess I will try this soon.

Is there a video posted or clearer instructions anywhere? I haven't worn a bathing suit since I had my double mastectomy 5 years ago. Going on a cruise next month and really want to jump in the pool and ocean I bought poofies and trimmed them to fit in my bathing suit but they are a bit uncomfortable/hard where they are tied. I unraveled another poof and althou thought I was following directions, my poof kept unrolling. Do you roll it like you are rolling up an ace bandage and twist before you pull thru, or twist after pulling thru?
Great toy for my cat, she's having a blast grabbing the tube part and running away with it!
TIA,
Cats

I am assuming that your swimsuit has pockets to place breast forms in. If there isn't a pocket, you know you can always sew fabric in to create a pocket.
If you have seen a hair bun product that looks like a mesh donut, this may help you understand what you are trying to do when "rolling the poofy" . You may be able to make the trimmed poofys you are already have more comfortable by placing them in either women's nude colored trouser socks or those wig caps.
If you decide that you don't want to sew, check out these breast forms ( $22.99 and even cheaper if there is a coupon available) that can be purchased at JoAnn's Fabrics.

OMG! I have been looking for these directions, which I read years ago then could not find again. At that time I tried and could not make one. Last yr I hot-glue-gunned natural sponges into my bathing suit.
This year I just took my stuffed, knitted foobie, made a durble sgretchable cover and sewed it into another bathing suit.
Now, at last, I am going to get the pouffy thing figured out. Thank you all for bringing this back - I have not looked here in months and there it is!!!
-
As a uni, I am always dealing with uneven and/or lopsided boobs and I really didn't trust myself to get this poof thing perfectly sized and trust it to stay in place while swimming laps. I was also scared off by how many women had trouble making them.
So I opted for a (relatively) cheap silicone breast form that I got for $20 on amazon, along with a Speedo swimsuit that has the hydro bra in it. This bra is like a shelf bra except that it is more bra-like and is sewn down onto the lining of the suit, not like a shelf bra that hangs open at the bottom. So I cut a small opening in the lining at the side to insert my form. Just like a mastectomy pocket. It has been working well so far. Looks good both wet and dry, and after swimming laps I haven't noticed any shifting about.
Just wanted to share. This swimsuit issue was a real challenge for me! -
I am making one and it is turning out OK. It turns out in an egg roll shape and I get it to the thickness I want and then leave a tail and insert the next one into that tail. The tail goes all the way across my old swimsuit cup (DD) and it takes about four egg rolls. Then I have to sew smaller ones on the top and bottom. Then I am putting a panel of black nylon to cover it and the top, stitched down will extend up past the round neck of my swimsuit a bit and go straight across to avoid gaping. Maybe I will try to post some pics.
-
I buy cheap regular suits and then I tack in what is, I think, called a modesty shield. The fairly heavy kind, which will hold its shape. It doesn't give me a boob exactly. but it gives enough of a bump to suggest there could be a boob there. I also have one suit with built-in, sturdy padding. That one I just wear as is. I have a light build, so minimal boobage goes with my frame anyway.
-
when i rolled mone, it turns out to be an egg shape,or more like a flat teardrop. I used 2 to make a fairly large C cup one. I should do a video. Its ptetty easy once you get the hsng of it. .
-
Here is a pic of the inside of one of my suits. Each cup turned out a little different but basically you just make some roll and fill it in the best you can. Rolls are stitched to the sides and to each other. This suit has a high neck so that was all that was needed. Several of my other tankini tops also got a kind of modesty panel that covers these up and goes a bit up into the neckline to turn a V-neck into a square neck.

Bumping this thread -
I'm posting a picture of how to make the swim poofy that is discussed and linked to in one of the early posts:
This shows how to make a "swim poofy" to use in a swimsuit instead of a costly breast form. The poofies are the scrunched up 'net' balls you find in the cosmetic section of your local store. When taken apart, the poof is a long net tube. Look for poofies that are soft, not scratchy, if you will wear them against your skin.
In the "grab it" picture below, stick your hand through the opposite end of the net tube (i.e. opposite from the end you are rolling), pull it through and back out the opposite end of the tube so that it makes a cover for what you just rolled up. When done, you can pin to your suit or enclose in an existing or self-sewn pocket. The poofy will work well in a suit with some type of cup so lumps don't show.
