Breast Implants Linked To Rare Blood Cancer ....

It's not nearly as rare as they think. Yet another reason to consider being flat and fabulous. So glad I got those damn TEs out of my muscles and stayed true to my body integrity.
"Previously the risk was estimated between one in three million to one in 50,000. The TGA now estimates the risk ranges between one in 10,000 and one in 1000."

Or, perhaps, a reason to consider lumpectomy! I'm always struck by women who feel that they will be "disfigured" by a lumpectomy! To be sure, someone with multi-focal/extensive cancer or small breasts may feel that a mastectomy is the logical choice. And, yes, I understand the concerns about symmetry and the stress of future mammograms. But, reconstruction often requires multiple surgeries, which may come with their own complications. Meanwhile, lumpectomies are often NOT disfiguring, and they do involve fewer complications than BMX + reconstruction.

I was supposed to have textured implants put in tomorrow, but after I saw this announcement this morning I decided to reschedule my surgery and get smooth rounds instead. It appears that the already very small risk of this cancer is quite tiny with smooth implants, so I feel good about this decision.

Silicone leaks have their own issues. There are a few options for those that wish reconstruction...own-tissue recon, saline implants. A woman who feels the need to reconstruct should have a safe option so this is disturbing. I also chose flat/fabulous because I had ILC, which is sneaky and I went un-diagnosed for years. The thought of having scans every 6 months bothered me (who wants that much dye injected into their bodies...just exchanging problems I felt). Women make their decisions based on many issues, not just symmetry.

I would suggest contacting your oncologist and breast surgeon to follow-up on this specific concern.
