Chronic Kidney Disease

Options

I just got my pre-surgery labs back, and my GFR is down to 44. That's stage 3 kidney disease. And I'm wondering if there are any special precautions I should take. I will talk to the surgeon and anesthesiologist, but I want to be forearmed by knowing what I should expect.

I do know that I can't take ANY OTC pain killers because of kidney problems and also because I can't tolerate aspirin, and acetaminophen interferes with my glucose sensor (I have diabetes). I also don't experience any relief from Vicodin, so I'm wondering what pain killers would be appropriate.

Could be that I'm worrying unnecessarily, but you folks are good at helping worriers! :-)

just a note, Vicodin has Tylenol in it. Blew out my moms kidneys. She was also diabetic. Whatever you get for pain, pay close attention to the ingredients. Most pain medications also have a version that does not contain Tylenol or Advil in it, but those are harder to get.

Thanks, Italychick! I didn't know that Vicodin had Tylenol (acetaminophen) in it! All I knew is that I couldn't tolerate it. I will be sure to talk to the docs about it because when I leave the hospital after surgery I want to be sure I have the right med. It's a hassle to try to correct a problem after the fact
