Rising ALP

Options

Question: Who knows much about a rise in ALP (Alkaline phosphatase). My doc seems more concerned than I am, and she doesn't tell me a lot about her thoughts. Guess I should ask, eh?

My ALP was great in 2014 (maybe 90 ish?), but it was right at the upper limit when I tested in 2016 (maybe a bit above 130; I can't remember). A 2nd test showed it creep up a tiny bit (maybe 140). My doc tested for the isoenzyme (?) that indicates bone ALP, and that was negative. So she ordered a liver CT, and that was normal. But, even when it crept down 2-3 points, she wanted another test. I said "Meh, let's wait, it's not that high" (everything I read seems to say we shouldn't be concerned until it is MUCH MUCH higher). She let it go.

Then I read this crazy thing at livestrong.org (not a very good reference site, imo), that said an increase (and it was 50%) in a cancer patient is commonly believed by docs to be a recurrence or mets. What? That's not what I read anywhere else; way to scare me a bit--and I'm no alarmist. I mean, gosh, I'm 12 years NED for goodness sakes.

I'm sure we'll check again next year, but I wondered what, if any, experience y'all had with this. My searches on the board didn't turn up a ton of worries, so I feel better. FYI, none of my other liver enzymes were high, nor was any other CMP blood work.

Thanks for any experiences you had.

Brenda

Some docs seem concerned by small elevations, and others are not concerned unless it doubles. In the absence of other symptoms, you can probably wait a bit and/or seek another opinion.
