Triple Negative IDC (radiation is not an option)

Hi there

I would love to hear from anyone who has experience with TN IDC but didn't have radiation as part of their treatment.

My sister was diagnosed with Hodgkins Disease back in 1992 and had mantel radiation which we believe has caused her breast cancer. Unfortunately this means radiation is not an option for her.

Any information would very much appreciated as this all so fresh and I'm just trying to gather as much information for my sister as possible.

    Swan - I'm not TN, but I am ER/PR negative. There's lots of information you haven't provided - such as the size of the tumor(s), the stage & grade, and what treatment she did have. Has she had chemo? Can she have chemo? You can post her diagnosis & treatment at My Profile.

    If she has had no treatment so far, a lumpectomy usually requires radiation. A mastectomy may not. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

    Hi MinusTwo - Thank you for responding.

    My sister is 48 and felt a lump and swelling on February 9th. After ultrasounds, mammograms, needle biopsy and MRI, on February 24th she was given the news that she has 4cm - grade 3 - TN - Invasive Ductal Carcinoma in the right breast - caused by mantel field radiation she had 23 years ago. The MRI showed nothing in the lymph nodes. On March 6th she had a sentinel biopsy under general to double check it has not spread to the lymphs. We will get the results on March 14th.

    She is scheduled for a mastectomy followed by an immediate DIEP on March 25th and a few weeks after will undergo chemotherapy.

    I would dearly love to hear from anybody who is in a similar situation. Particularly with zero radiation.

    So sorry to hear about your sister and her recent diagnosis. Wishing her all the best.

    I was diagnosed with TNC in August 2012. Did my chemo regimen for 9 months and had no radiation treatment at all. Mammogram and ultrasound done in November shows NED. So far, I'm good.

    Hi Swan,

    My primary diagnosis was 4.5 cm triple negative IDC, no nodes affected. I had a mastectomy followed by chemo, but ultimately radiation was not recommended for me, so didn't receive any.

    I had a mastectomy on the other side after completing chemo, and pathology showed there was an additional 6.5 cm of mixed DCIS and LCIS (but ER/PR positive). After a comprehensive review and having all of the pathology redone,no further chemo or radiation was recommended. I was diagnosed in January of 2015, and apart from some lingering side effects from chemo, I'm doing ok.

    I'll be thinking of your sister as she gets her results and moves through treatment

    Hello, my new to this website and just joined this group. I was dx with triple negitive in November 2016. 13 years ago, I had DCIS, lumpectomy and radiation. So this a new dx, not related but in same breast. Genetic testing is negitive. My tumor was 8 mm so lucky it was small. I just finished chemo and couldn't have radiation because I had it before in the same breast. I scheduled my diep for July. My oncologist wanted to treat the cancer first. Best wishes to your sister

    No rads here either!

    one thing my surgeon told me is that if I had a lumpectomy, rads are a sure thing, but with a mastectomy it depends on other factors- response to chemo, number of nodes, etc.. I am 8 months out from last chemo & 7 months out from surgery-- so far, so good.

    I know two 5+ year TNBC survivors who did not have rads.
