Low GFR (Chronic Kidney Disease) after hormone treatment

Options

Completing 5 years of tamoxifen, I now have 3rd stage CKD. Is anyone else experiencing this? My kidney function started deteriorating two years ago, but primary care said "no worries." Now my GFR is at 42 and creatinine clearance level 1.3. Will this improve? This puts me in 3rd stage CKD. I am 58 years old with the kidney function of an 80 yr. old woman.

Geez I'm so sorry. I never heard that this was a SE, however I don't doubt that it is. I would urge you to see a nephrologist ASAP. No worries does not seem to be an appropriate response. Hopefully you kidney function will improve the longer you are off the drug. Good luck and please keep us posted. I think it's important to know about this potentially serious SE.

Thank you, dtad. I have to investigate other things too. I can no longer take NSAIDS of any kind. Have to watch potassium and phosphorus intake. I'm waiting for a call from the dietician at our hospital to go over beneficial foods. It may not be the tamoxifen but I was pretty surprised to hear my filtering capacity is only 42. After researching CKD more in depth, it sounds like a lot of people have this condition and don't know it. There is not much one can do about it except watch the diet and drink lots of water. My problem is I don't pay attention to portion sizes, I love orange juice and it is filled with potassium. I love cottage cheese and can eat 2 cups in a sitting, filled with potassium! The serving size in 1/2 c. I guess I ignore what different meds do to the organs. So many over the counter drugs...diet supplements...even overtaking vitamins can be harmful to our organs, especially the kidneys. They have to filter everything.

Thanks, hope I didn't scare anyone.

Shifting this topic to recent after reading recent kidney function post from hormone therapy. Where are the studies? My kidney function got slightly better, to 46 GFR. Still a problem.

I have a similar GFR and it goes up if I drink a lot of water the morning of the test. I don't really worry about it nor do my doctors. If you are getting this while very well hydrated, it is a different story.

Potassium is important for our hearts so not sure what to do on that.

I know that studies showed that much lower doses of Femara are effective. Perhaps you could alternate days or cut the pill for your AI.
