Does anyone have lymphedema in just their upper arm? That's where my swelling is. No problems at all in my hand or forearm.

That's not typical for LE, is it?

Yes people can get it either areas. If you don't wear a glove or gauntlet it can get squeezed into your hand progressing your Le.

I have stage one in hand stage two arm.

We are each unique - there is no one answer for all of us who LIVE (and love life) wbile dealing withe LE.

For me - basically it's above and below my elbow that is the issue. Hand only when the wrong compression level. (Gauntlets don't work for me except for short particular reasons to wear.)

I'm confused about the glove/gauntlets. I know you have to be careful about the hand and watch for swelling, but I thought if you don't have any signs of LE in the hand you can just wear a sleeve alone.

Melle. It would be nice not to wear hand garments but if you don't you may trap even a bit of stagnant lymph into your hand to stay. Not good. You might be able to get away with it for a while but it may catch up to you. Hand gear helps push lymph fluid up and out the arm. Yah I think it sure sucks but yah gotta do what you gotta do to keep from le beast from progressing. I don't know of any therapists that suggest not wearing gloves or gauntlets.

    Thanks for dropping in!

Will try to explain (as it was to me but don't remember all the exact words) why a glove is imparative with a sleeve even without hand issues.

Think of it as the hand is the last part of/the end of the arm. There may still be certain lymph nodes that do work for the hand to keep swelling down but they are not the ones that drain other areas of the arm. When a compression sleeve is put on the arm, it compresses the arm tissue to move lymphatic fluid. Fluid flows to areas of least resistance - upper arm areas where there are functioning nodes to move it on but it will also go to the lower end (hand) which may be overwhelmed by the additional fluid 'pouring in' thus nothing to keep it from 'pooling' without a compression glove to prevent fluid from flowing into that area of less pressure. Also hands are usually 'hanging' lower than upper arms physically. In other words - a sleeve puts pressure on arm to move fluid- - up or down. A glove is pressure to prevent fluid from moving down (hand) from the sleeve pressure. That's very simplistic but might make sense why it takes both working together and hope it makes sense.

I had swelling only in my upper arm -it was minimal, but concerning. I called the Medical Oncologist office (he was on vacation) and spoke with his Nurse Practitioner, and she set me up with an evaluation. My MO had told me the swelling in the breast would continue for the next 8 years and it was nothing, that my bras would feel tight, etc. My evaluation showed that my breast was LE with spillage to the upper arm. I am waiting on insurance approval for treatment.  So pursue your health and become your own advocate.

Alostlady. Interesting that your MO is like god and knows your future right down to having swollen breast for 8 years. Don't you feel like going back to him after 8 years is over and saying "it's still here. Your not god" I wonder which crystal ball he used. ;) le doesn't go away that easy. It can be reversed only in very early stage but one must be very vigilent to avoid progression. Hard to do but can be done. Maybe MO can wave magic wand to help. He is very uneducated to le. Also for him to tell you bras would feel tight is right but then he should say so don't wear one or it will cut off your lymph fluid more so. (Wear compression tee or cami)

Yes you are so right pursue your health and become your advocate. Your really a smart person to do that. :) I'm proud of you.

Swelling only in my upper arm. I wear compression when I exercise, no glove. It's stayed stable for years but ... knock wood.

Good to know! I know that some women only wear the sleeve. I'm hoping I can get away with that, but will obviously be keeping a close eye on things.
