Xgeva and I'm NOT stage IV? Thought I was getting Prolia!!!

Dear all,

After months of research about Prolia, I decided to move forward and get what I thought was a 2x a year injection at yesterday's regular MO check up, recommended by my MO.

After driving 27 miles home through snow, I looked at the drug info they gave me and found that they had giving me Xgeva/denosumab, which apparently is administered every month, not 2x a year? I also did research and all I could find were Stage IV ladies posting about it to treat bone metastases (which I don't have). Even the drug company advertises it this way...

Do you think they made a mistake? They had one of the chemo nurses give it to me....so I wonder. Are any of you getting this for osteopenia and are you getting it every month? that seems like a hassle, and I don't want to have to drive just to get an injection monthly. I wanted the 2x a year injection.

I'll call them later today, but thought I'd see what all of you have to say.

Xgeva is Prolia on steroids!  You are correct that Xgeva is given more often( I get it every other month) and is a higher dose than Prolia.  Both are Denosumab, just different dosing.  I think maybe there was just some confusion because you got it at your MOs office.

its the same thing, old ladies even get it once a year for osteoporosis. it is to prevent calcium loss in bones during treatment. I get it once a month. I also get one tamoxifen each day for treatment of my stage 4 cancer. the combo seems to be pretty good.

Thanks you guys!, I think they might have given me some drug "swag" (ha ha) that advertised the Xgeva but that I got Prolia, which was what my doc and I agreed on. I got a zipper pouch that will be great for makeup; it had a bottle of calcium supps in it (nice, but I don't use their brand) plus the drug insert with all the fine print. The nurses might have just been being kind.

I've emailed my MO for clarification and am waiting to hear.

I just received 2nd injection of Xgeva. I tolerated the 1st injection well. However, the 2nd injection is giving some hip and jaw pain. Has anyone had to discontinue Xgeva because of these side effects??

My MO emailed me and told me the Xgeva was given in two strengths-one for osteopor probs and one for mets--I got the lower, osteoporosis dose. Sorry for freaking out on all of you a little bit. I wish the nurses would have explained that I was getting this type of bone-protector instead of what they referred to as "Prolia". It was confusing.

So far I haven't had side effects. Recky1, you should document your pain and where exactly it is, and then call your MO. It sounds like you might be experiencing side effects. I hope they go away!

What you got is "Prolia".  The only difference between the two is the dosing.  Exactly the same medicine, just different dosing.

Thanks cive, even more confusing the way dosages are referred to as actual different drug names. Thanks for helping me figure it all out, sisters.

I had to stop exgiva, my side effect was excruciating pain for 6 days to two weeks. went to the male breast cancer convention in KC in april, and asked around, no body else had that side effect.

My MO pushed for Xgeva. My OG/Gyn said no - go with Prolia. And she told him so too.

Update: Since my initial injection of Prolia, I have had no side effects whatsoever. It (so far) has been a non-event. Next injection scheduled during my regular 6 month check up in August.

Horrible you had such dramatic side effects, Cliff. Are you getting Prolia now?
