Aromasin side effect renal failure

Options

I have been on aromasin for 18 months. My labs showed stage 3 renal failure. My mo felt aromasin was the cause. Has anyone experience this? I am hoping my kidneys will recover. Dealing with BC X 2 is difficult and now this

Mgrisham, I am so sorry to hear you're experiencing this. I just started Aromasin two and a half weeks ago. I noticed that I have to pee way more than ever before, feels like a diuretic. I'm also taking Valerian and melatonin at night as per my acupuncturist/naturopath. She did investigate for me and said the latter supplements could have a diuretic effect, but from what I am hearing you say, Aromasin had a detrimental effect on your kidneys. I'm going to do some research and see what I can find. I also see my MO on the 13 March. Will ask for more info then.

"Because exemestane and its metabolites are excreted in both urine and feces, impaired renal as well as hepatic function both lead to reduced metabolism, with consequent elevated plasma levels.25" The link to the study is the footnote.

my RO had warned me that side effects might include damaged liver function, and a search just now resulted in this article:

    https://livertox.nih.gov/Exemestane.htm

And I did find this: bodybuilders using Aromasin are at increased risk of renal failure. Of course in their case, they're taking a black market drug.

Aromasin is a steroid, unlike other hormone therapies prescribed for BC.

As you said, BC is enough to deal with and then we face a whole host of unintended side effects from these powerful and not fully understood drug therapies. Ugh

Mgrisham....so sorry you are going through this. Another serious SE of anti hormone treatment that we are not being made aware of! I hope your kidneys recover too.I see you had a recurrence despite taking Tamoxifen so there certainly are no guarantees. I'm not against anti hormone treatment. I just feel the we all need to make informed decisions about it. We need to get all the information available so can evaluate risk vs benefit. Good luck to all navigating this complicated disease and making these tough decisions!

Finally! Mgrisham thank you for making light of this! My experience was with tamoxifen. My discharge always pinkish, very painful and dry. My GFR diminished to 46 which made me 3rd stage CKD. I've been stable for 2 years, creatinine clearance at 1.2. I felt like I had a constant bladder infection. I was on tam. for 5 years and went off last July. If this doesn't show up as a serious side effect of these hormone treatments, I will be furious. Kidney disease is no joke and I firmly believe hormone treatments can cause CKD! My Nephrologist said I could live normally if it does not get worse. Lower salt drastically in your diet.

Make sure you are well-hydrated for any GFR tests. It can make a huge difference in results.

rianne...so sorry you had serious SE from anti hormone treatment. I just wanted to let you know the feeling like you always have to pee could be interstitial cystitis. It can be caused by lack of estrogen. I have it and it can be miserable. There are meds and diet that help. Good luck and keep us posted.
