Osteoporosis and Probiotics

Options

Gut bacteria are proving more vital every day. Besides needing to replace them after chemo for better nutrition, they now appear to play a role in improving bone density lost due to estrogen depletion, a subject we face every day whether due to age or tamox or AIs. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26366421

Thanks for this, Sue. I see that the bacterium in the paper you cite above is Bifodobacterium longum. A quick search turned up all sorts of good things about B. longum. Apparently it can be found in cheese, yogurt, fermented dairy products like kefir, and cultured vegetables like sauerkraut. I will be checking labels. (Interestingly, babies get it from breast milk.)

The oncology nutritionist I consulted thinks that research will soon show gut bacteria to be incredibly important. I believe one of the benefits of a good diet is that it creates the right conditions for the good guys to thrive.

This is interesting, as about 3 years ago I developed terrible digestion problems after about 6 years of taking Femara. I continue to suffer from really bad indigestion, however prior to this starting 3 years ago, had never had any problems before, ever. Maybe this is another side affect of ovary removal and 9 years of an aromatase inhibitor. Thanks for the information. I must look into this further and I am now developing osteoporosis too.

Bright, I am sorry it took so long for me to see this and reply. For some reason, I am not getting notices to my email. :-(

I have read that all of those promote good gut bacteria. Apple cider vinegar should have the "mother" or slimy looking stuff at the bottom of the bottle. Just be sure to mix it up well before using. I personally look for organic products. Sauerkraut works, too.

In order to reproduce the results of the study cited above, be sure to find a probiotic that contains Bifodobacterium longum which was used in the study.

Kefir and Kombucha are delicious fermented drinks. Both are easy to make, but available at the health food stores and some conventional supermarkets. Yum. Yum. Yum.

I posted this in another discussion, but in addition to all the good things mentioned above, pro and pre-biotics seem to relieve anxiety too.

Here's the easy to read version outlining the above.

I’ve been taking probiotics religiously ever since DH had to take Flagyl several times for a perforated bowel (yes, it was malpractice but he wouldn’t sue) and the hemicolectomy it required; he was terrified of getting c. diff. I do Probiotic America’s Perfect Biotics and Extra Strains. If you are going to eat sauerkraut, make sure it’s the fresh refrigerated stuff in jars or plastic bags—the canned stuff is pasteurized and has no live cultures. Kimchi is even better…if you know someone who makes their own, better yet. And of course, real Greek yogurt with no fillers or sugars.

I've discovered Kefir by Lifeway. It's a cultured lowfat milk smoothie (lactose free) - excellent probiotic!! If you like yogurt you will love this and it gets the job done!
