Pain in calf
I am 4 weeks post BMX. I woke up this morning with calf pain. No redness,no swelling, just tender, even more so when I stand and walk. I've read about DVT and have no other symptoms. I have a compression stocking that I put on to see if it would help. It is hurting more since I put it on. Let me back up a minute. Since surgery I have been having constipation issues. I now have an anal tear. I don't got meds from my doc to see if I can heal it. Yesterday was awful. I almost passed our on the toilet. The clenching and twisting in pain was unreal. So I'm wondering if due to that I strained my muscles? When I say I was in pain I'm talking shaking legs, chills .holding my breath, screaming in pain and wrapping my legs on the toilet. Such a visual, right? Should I be worried?

GAMomma - you should certainly call your doc right away and give him that very visual that you posted. You need to get on heavy duty meds for constipation NOW. At the least, they should have told you about Colace to soften your stools in the hospital. Anesthesia & pain meds make constipation worse. But you really need laxatives and your doc should know about this. There can be serious consequences of impacted bowel. Once you get the system 'freed up', check out the constipation thread on BCO. There are lots of good ideas to keep things moving.
And if you're really concerned about DVT, that is even more reason to call the doc RIGHT NOW.

GAMomma - just wanted to say that I hope the doc clears you. Maybe a simple blood test will show that you need more magnesium.

This is the crazy thing..not constipated at all. I have soft stools. I do have internal hemorrhoids also.I saw the doc yesterday and he gave me a compound cream.
I'm calling the on call Dr now about my calf.

Contact your DR ASAP!Have you had issues with before? You said you have a leg compression stocking so that kind of sounds like you've had issues before.
Prolonged (since surgery for 4 weeks) constipation along with an anal tear should be medically addressed - now not later.
M T is right - calf pain could possibly be something as simple as low Magnesium (or Potassium). BUT it takes blood work to check.
It is possible to have a 'partial' blockage that does allow some soft or liquid stool to pass it. Did you give your Dr the same description of what goes on in the bathroom as you gave us? If not - you should.

i agree that you need blood work to know your magnesium and potassium level but do an ultrasound of the affected leg. you just had surgery and DVT should be ruled out.insurance will cover the procedure. i have seen people with DVT whose only complaint is pain. it probably is not DVT and ultrasound should confirm it.good luck.oh get more meds for the constipation.bisacodyl, senna, miralax taken in scheduled doses.MD might give you more.a gastroenterologist referral if it does not resolve.:)

Good morning everyone. I have an appointment this morning. Within my BS office is a vein clinic. I will assume they have equipment to check.
Kicks.. I did not have a problem before. I had knee surgery years ago for a cyst on the back of my leg. My doc hoped a compression stocking would relieve the pain and shrink it,it did not. That was my right leg,the problem now is my left. I got it out and a precaution after reading a few things.
Hopefully things will be okay. I will update later.
About my bottom.. just a mini update.. I have been doing suppositories,creams.. I always take fiber and a sendakot. Since this is not my first rodeo with this problem. However this is different. Pain wise. I'm sure my BS will do what he can. I don't think I have any kind of blockage. I can go potty fine,it's just excruciating when I do. I was a little backed up about 3 weeks ago.. but that resolved quickly. But that is when all of these problems started. It has just gotten worse instead of better. Thank you for all of your help and care. I appreciate it.

what meds are you on? diuretics like Lasix will dry you out and cause constipation "Colace" stool softener will help that. My exgiva shot once a month causes extreme pain for 6 days some where randomly in me.. good luck with the doctor.

I'm back.. I'm alive 😁
Not DVT I got an ultra sound, all clear. Just muscular pain, mostly likely from clenching earlier this week.
To answer some questions. The meds I'm currently taking are synthroid for hypothyroidism.. which I know slows things down. This is the situation for me,no constipation. As I said in an earlier post there were a few days that things were slow, but not hard. I take a fiber pill, a stool softner(generic stuff for colace) and recently added sendakot. To be honest after I added the sensuality, things changed for the worse..hhhmm.. didn't think about that til now. Plus I use anusol suppositories daily and have this compound cream my Dr gave me. Plus I do a sitz bath about every 2 hours. I think I'm doing all I can.

Thanks for the reply on why you had a compression stocking 'on hand'. It was a logical question to ask as it is impossible to know anyone's past HX. There are many possible reasons for someone having a compression stocking - not all having to do with a previous DVT incident. Knee surgery is definately one - even non-invasive surgery.
Don't know your age or anythiing except what you have written - but have you had a colonoscopy in recent years? If your intestinal issues don't resolve soon, an appt with a GastroEnterologist might be a good idea as one of the sites BC 'likes' to met to is the intestines. While BS are great in their field of expertise, they do not know 'everything' about 'everything'. There are other with expertise in their area.
Just some thoughts to ponder.

yes,Kicks,it's true not knowing a person's background can be super confusing for current situations. I do see a GI doc as needed. He was the one who did the colonoscopy last..Feb. I have thickening of the bowel. It is checked yearly. Last yr since I had 2 yrs with no change he upgraded treatment to as needed or repeat colonoscopy at 50. It was shortly after that ,that my first problem with my external hemorrhoids became an issue. I had to have them removed via office procedure because they thrombost.. Pain is nearly unbearable.. kinda like today.lol
Anyway just to give you a little info.. I'm 42..mother of 5. 21,17,16,9,7. I had gastric bypass in 2003. I have maintained my weight loss without a ton of post problems. I am very anemic and need iron infusions a few times a year. I have a blind loop in my intestines due to gastric bypass, this is why the colonoscopy was ordered originally. It gives me problems here and there but liveable.
My doc met me in the cardiac area where they did my ultra sound. He took a quick look at my rear. He said it looked slightly better, but still not good. I have a recheck appointment on Tuesday. He said if it is not better we will need surgical treatment. Oh fun days ahead..
