Diarrhea and radiation

Hi - Has anyone had a problem with diarrhea when they were having breast radiation? My radiation oncologist doesn't think it's related, but it just seems kind of a coincidental to me that this started midway through my treatment. Thanks for your help!

Yes! I just finished my second week of rads and I have severe nausea and just started with diarrhea. Isn't it amazing how the med profs often write-off symptoms as unrrelated to rads, yet so many of us have the symptoms? Noone else in my family is ill with these symptoms as they most likely would be with a stomach bug - I truly believe the symptoms are related to the rads. The ironic part is that my rad nurse always asks if I have nausea or diarrhea, but she was the one who originally told me that any stomach problems would not be related to my rad treatment.

Why is it that RO's refuse to believe any SE's are connected to rads?  Monique4 and Anandagram, I hope you will feel better soon.

I coulndn't get rid of diarrhea after Taxotere. I was on all kinds of meds and should have been the other way. I finally went to a GI doc and even though murlax is for constipation, it works on diarrhea also.

Exactly, Elizabeth - Why do they not believe us. I just wrote about this on the "Is anyone else falling apart" thread. I will tell my rad onc nurse about the nausea today as she will ask, but a part of me does not want to tell her as I will be upset when she fluffs it off. I honestly think they know it will cause nausea, even though they say it will not. They must, as they always ask me if I have nausea. How ironic is that.

Thanks for your good wishes - same to you,

    Sher

I'm with you ladies on this one. Although I've finished chemo Dec.1st,my stomach hasn't been the same since. Now on my 3rd day of radiation out of 5 weeks, I've noticed a queasy feeling along with diarrhea. I've always said the dr.'s don't tell you everything. I don't know but I'm tired of feeling tired. This trip has been going on since last June when I was diagnosed with IDC stage 1 grade 3. I had a lumpectomy. We all want to feel good again. Cheers & best wishes to all. 🌻🍀🎀

I'm going through my third week of radiation and started getting diarrhea. I was, also, wondering if that should be happening. I'm glad I'm not the only one, it kind of scared me.

I did not have diarrhea with rads, but after Taxotere there was nothing left in my body to expel

Are either of you "new" ladies on Herceptin/Perjecta? i found Perjeta caused diarrhea also.

But I have to give 3 cheers to my RO. She not only accepted all the side effects, she is the only one who got me to PT for LE. And she asked if I would like to see her an extra year because my MO retired. And 2 years later, has ordered more LE/PT for me. She is absolutely amazing.

I have a question, as I'm thinking of having a lumpectomy w/radiation, rather than the mastectomy. Those of you who've experienced diarrhea, have you all had other drugs or treatments in addition to the radiation?

I have completed one week of AccuBoost targeted radiation without any issues. Today I started whole breast radiation. I just started experiencing diarrhea and stomach cramps (at work :(). I found an article from Cleveland Clinic that does verify this as a possible side effect.

The lining of the bowel is very sensitive to radiation and may become inflamed, or swollen (a condition called enteritis) during treatments. Radiation may also cause an inflammation of the stomach (called gastritis) or an inflammation of both the stomach and the bowel (called gastroenteritis). Your treatments may cause you to have:

    • Abdominal bloating or cramps
    • Thin or loose stools
    • Watery diarrhea
    • Sense of urgency to have a bowel movement

The symptoms above may occur during the second or third week of radiation therapy. Occasionally, blood or mucus may appear in the stool.

    Hi Foza,

Did the article say how long it takes to heal or if it will heal? I have the opposite of you - constipation with pain and nausea. My doctor says my large intestine likely was burnt during treatments.

Hi! Was this article referencing breast radiation SEs or radiation in general? I've been bloated for a week now, just finished rads. I'm frightened out of my mind that it's mets as I was never told this could be an SE. My onc doesn't seem concerned. He thinks its gas.

I got nauseous 4 hours after every rad session, like clockwork. Then the diarrhea. My RO agreed it was a SE. my rads skimmed part of my large bowel, and shortly after completing rads I developed ulcerative colitis...this he wouldn’t agree was a SE. Oooooook

Sorry to hear this! It's so frustrating that they won't admit that some lesser known conditions are SEs. I'm still waiting to get testing for my stomach bloating.
