Hi everyone...

My mom went for her routine screening mammogram last week and a few days lster was told to come back for a repeat. The receptionist was not in a hurry to book an appointment but she got one for this past Tuesday. When she arrived at the clinic she was only given an ultrasound not another mammogram. The technician did not concentrate on a specific area, just did an overall ultrasound on both breasts and arm pits. She just said the radiologist wanted some more vieways as precaution. Is this normal? We are in ontario Canada btw!

We haven't heard back yet so I hope that is good news. My mom is 56 and has been going for routine mammogramscreening since 50 but this is the first time she is called back. She went for her annual checkup a few weeks ago. Her doctor did a full breast exam and felt nothing.

I'm hoping to get someverything insight and to hopefully ease my mind.

Thanks

It isn't unusual to be called back for more films or even an ultrasound. I have been getting mammograms since I was 40 and I bet I've been called back at least 10 times in 18 years. I've even had to have several biopsies for things that looked suspicious but turned out to be nothing cancerous.

Ultrasound can often see more in the breasts than mammogram can, especially if the breasts are dense. That's why they went over the breasts and arm pits, to make sure they got a good look at everything. I'm sure if they saw something worrisome they will call your mother back for more testing or a biopsy.

I think that you should try not to worry as it is totally normal!

They might have also asked to do a biopsy while you were there if they saw anything suspicious. I'm not entirely sure about that, but in my case, I had gone in for an US and biopsy, but the US showed additional trouble areas (so I know they were assessing them real time) and asked if they could biopsy the new areas, too.

I couldn't imagine they would bring you in three separate times?

    Hi Chantal89,

This is fairly common. Something very similar happened to me. I gotcalled back for another appointment after my screening mammogram for a 3D mammogram and ultrasound. After the ultrasound the radiologist told me right then that I needed a biopsy. I had to wait another four weeks for my biopsy appointment but I'm finally having it tomorrow. The radiologist sends the report to your family physician, so your mom should check with her doctor to see if there are any recommendations. I'm in Ontario too and our healthcare system seems to move a lot slower. I hope it turns out that everything is fine with your mother.
